What are shadows/midtones/highlights ...

I know toggling the colour correction in art can yeild great results ... more blue in the shadows ... more red in the highlights ... it works just the way I want it to ... but what exactly is it ? I mean - how does the colour balance tool work ?

Can anyone explain to me how this works in precise terms ? How is "shadow" defined in a picture ?

Thanks !

I guess the tool simply reads the histogram of an image and splits it into 3 equal overlapping areas with blurry borders, left/center/right. And if you don't know the histogram, check it out in Photoshop > Image > Adjust > Levels

Mr. Stahlberg is right, but photoshop is a somewhat weird program imho, in that it's vague or just unwieldy. I have combustion which is quite good when it comes to precise manipulation and consistency for the workflow. So I've taken some screengrabs so you can see the ranges, they're also called the ranges in the app self. They overlap somewhat but are basically just weighted along a diagram you see below, which is also a histogram of the great Bougeuraue(sp?). I'm sure this 'll help. The histogram shows amounts of pixels in a certain range of value, either separate colourchannels or the value alone.

normal:

shadows:

midtones:

highlights:
