3D assisted drawing or painting

The idea of this topic is to hear from anyone using a 3D program to assist with a 2D work of art, and how they work with this approach. For example, using Maya (or whatever) to pose and light a human model then using that as a reference for your drawing/painting.

Pros and cons of this approach that I have found: it's helpful to have a reference for complicated compositions and camera angles, and it's a good way to keep all elements at the correct scale, but can sometimes introduce a stiffness and constraint to how the 2D image develops. Another benefit of this is a reverse effect where this has helped me make better and more dynamic 3D renders.

thanks,
-David
