Industrial/Mechanical Designers

A project I'm working on is calling for research of good mechanical design. This is an area I'm not too familiar with, so could use the names of some artists who might be considered "masters" in that genre.
What I'm looking for specifically is mechanical design with lots of moving parts exposed, pistons, gears, and joints. Something along the lines of Japanese Mecha is good, but preferably with more more detail than the sleek, enclosed designs I usually see from that genre. More open, grittier, lots of thought put into the function and form as if the machinery in question existed for a reason. Doom 3's environmental machinery as a simpler example.

Are there one or two names that stick out above all others? Does anyone know where I can draw inspiration for this?

Many thanks in advance for the feedback! I'm totally lost here.

A true master, although not what I would call an industrial or mechanical designer. He is, however, a progenitor of the type of imagery I think you are seeking:

Yes, Giger is a fantastic artist. He's very organic though, and I'm looking for something more like raw mechanical inspiration, or even steam punk.

Thanks very much!
