Funny thing is, that link only provides the smallest fraction of ripped off artwork. There were literally hundreds upon hundreds of pages of art like that. Plus numerous covers.

THAT is why there are so many Rob haters.

Waitaminit i didn't know Neil Gaiman drew comics?
I thought he had guest artists do all his Sandman stuff that's how i remember it reading them all. It was cool he had different artists interpret his stories. Added to the concept of the title i felt. I remember he had one guy (Zulli?) who drew the last few issues that were basically all pencil work and no inks. His artwork was wonderfully intricate.

As for Liefield, i never liked his artwork back then when his books were all the rage (i still can't fathom what all the adoration was about). Small heads with limited expressions on bulky oversized shoulders tottering on tapered legs with brittle ankles and big feet. I just don't get it. At least to me it meant i at least had some taste even back then

Yeah, back when I started collecting I really liked his stuff, but as I got older and seeing more good illustrator, I noticed theat Rob had a kind of formula in how he drew his characters and I stared to see that he repeated his poses very often in different books that he did. I haven't bought one of his books in years. I honestly never realized that they were straight rip offs until I saw that link about 30 minutes ago.

OMG i forgot Cam Kennedy...shame on me

Uderzo (Asterix) is a legeng for a couple years now, but Asterix stories suffered when Goscinny died ...same happened to Blueberry when Jean-Michel Charlier died. Without this two most talented writers none of the series i mentioned would have the impact they did.

Here's a few names I haven't seen yet:

Comic Strips:
Jimmy Johnson (Arlo & Janis)
Patrick McDonnell (Mutts)
Pat Brady (I think that's who does "Rose is Rose" http://www.nightswimming.com/rose/pasqual.html)

Comic books/Graphic Novels:
Charles Vess (Sandman-Midsummer Night's Dream)
P Craig Russell (Sandman-Ramadan)
*we could have a whole separate category for Sandman artists

Eric Powell (Goon)
Jeff Smith (Bone)
Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha)
Dave Sim (Cerebus)
Matt Wagner (Grendel, Mage)
Larry Marder (Beanworld)
Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics, Zot!)
Eric Powell (Why I Hate Saturn, Plasticman)

STAN SAKAI ! ! (Usagi Yojimbo) Sorry, didn't want him to be overlooked.

As for the great Rob Liefeld debate, for me he was the Kenny G. of comics. It's not a crime that he was a bad artist who had little knowledge of human anatomy. It's since he was extremely popular, one couldn't avoid seeing his work and he led good kids to make bad drawings. I hadn't known that he ripped off so many poses but his characters were unoriginal and his style was a poor imitation of Todd McFarlane's.

Re: Sil3.

Yeah, I noticed one or two new Asterisk comics once in a while...the first 20 or 30 were the best ones, though.

A little trip down memory lane, but when I was young( wayyy back in the 80s) I use to cherish the times watching my brother copy pictures from the Asterisk books...my brother was simply a ****ing awesome artist back then. I really wished he kept it up...but he failed to enter an art college and I really think it hurt him badly. I think my favourite picture he copied was one of Asterisk and Obelisk coming back to the village with wild boars under their arms...

Silly people. It's not the artists who is important to a Comic Book. It's the writer.

Warren Ellis - really enjoyed almost everything he has worked on (especialy "Planetary"): http://www.warrenellis.com/index.php?cat=5

Oh, yeah... I forgot to mention Frank Cho. He's great.

Frank Cho is great. I don't follow comic books quite as much as I perhaps would like to, but I've always liked Marc Silvestri's work (Darkness, Cyber Force, and probably every other Top Cow comic series). And I'm also a big fan of Phil Foglio http://www.studiofoglio.com.
