How do you color drawings like Hayao Miyazaki?

I want my art to be colored the same way these cels were. I use paint tool sai to color all my drawings but I cannot get them to look like they are apart of an animated film. How can I get this to happen?

There really is no special trick to working in the anime cel-shading style--it's just line art with colors/values done as flat instead of gradual transitions.

You should post your failed results so we can troubleshoot what went wrong. I can't see examples of your work in your CGPortfolio, so I have no idea what level you're at in your artistic development. It could simply be that you haven't progressed enough as an artist to do any style justice at this point, or it could be something else. We won't know until you post some examples.

This is an example of how I've been coloring. It looks nothing like what Hayao Miyazkai makes.

Which image(s) am I supposed to be looking at for your failed cel-shading attempt? The one with the guy wearing a yellow scarf and a cellphone floating in front of his left hand?

Okay, in the future, don't just link to a page full of sketches and expect others to go hunt for the an image that you didn't even describe. I had to guess. Just post the image (like you did now in your edited post). If you want others to help you, make it easy for them to do so.

The problem with your version are the follows:

-You used gradations, and cel-shading should not contain gradations. The values/colors must be totally flat.

-Your lines are too thick compared to the inking of the Miyazaki style. Line quality does contribute to the overall stylization.

-The character design style is totally different. Again, the overall look of the Miyazaki style isn't just cel-shading, but also the stylization choices. The stylization parameters of your image is of a totally different genre/style so of course it'll look nothing like Miyazaki.

If you want to achieve the Miyazaki look, then you have to work in a style very similar to his. For example, Makoto Shinkai's latest feature film, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, has a similar style in terms of character design and overall art direction to Miyazaki's work, and looks different from Shinkai's previous works. If he had chosen a different stylization approach, the film wouldn't have looked similar to Miyazaki's work.
