Drawing Tilesets for 2D/Isometric Games

I have been scouring the web for valuable insights on creating competitive tilesets that don't look generic.

I love that Reiner has put his tilesets online royalty free, but they're a little too generic tbh.

I have been trying to get my hands on the tilesets used by the folks at the now defunct Ensemble Studios (for games released more than a decade ago: Age of Empires 1&2) but I have had no success.

Anyone have any valuable links or insights on tileset creation especially for a more historically oriented action/strategy title?
