Help creating backgrounds that compliment characters

I'm looking for resources that can help me create better backgrounds for my animations / Illustrations in terms of colour and composition, any suggestions?

Since you already know exactly what it is you need to tackle, it's really just a matter of finding the right learning resources. You should start with the sticky threads right here in the Art T&T forum--it contains some excellent tutorials, links, and books spanning the critical foundations of visual art.
