Concept Sketch: Fate Spirit Sketch

Here's another sketch - this time I've been playing with the Fate Spirit. I quite like how this one came out. I think it contrasts well against the Time Spirit design. There is an intentional yin-yang thing going on between the styles of the two.

I'm still just playing around really - giving the concept time to evolve visually. Doesn't seem any point in rushing into the final pic - loads of time left yet! :)

Looking good, would look better with some more whirliness in her clothing. Reminds me of Eldred from Dr Who and The Hand of Fear. Probably too young to remember that.

Dr Who? Yeah - I was probably hiding behind the sofa!

She will have a lot more swirly things in the final illustration - as will the Time Spirit.

In my head it's looking great... but as we all know - the mind sees things differently! And then there's the question of whether I'm actually good enough to paint it as well as I hope I can! :o

..or something...

Hey, saying she looked like Eldred was a great compliment. I really fancied her, even though she turned into a man in the end. The trauma of that particular episode haunts me to this day.

Hehehe.. well... there was an intention of mild androgeny in the design...

Wow, I can imagine how these two spirits will interact with each other. It looks like the time spirit is taunting the fate spirit. I have an idea: What if the two spirits were watching over a human being. This being could be portrayed in the middle of the scene. They could be the protagonists/antagonist that play a subcontious role in the human's choices.

AustinM - There will be a human in the picture (as illustrated in the initial concept).

Though the personalities are quite different, the two spirits are actually working together to manipulate the human - they have a common goal.

I really should post a more detailed explanation. I promise I'll do that soon - maybe with an updated concept for the whole picture.

Thanks for commenting.

i'd like to hear more of the story...sounds interesting

I'll try and dedicate some time to it tomorrow.

I need to do a proper rough for the composition, so maybe I can get that out of the way...

Concept Sketch: Full Image Concept

Ok, here’s the concept I promised!

It is super-rough though. This isn't a final concept - I'm still undecided how best to illustrate it. I like the drama of the wide shot, but wonder if it would work better as a portrait - with more focus on the characters...

I figured it's about time I explained the theme in more detail...

The idea is that Time and Fate are masters over man.

The painting perceives Time and Fate as twin spirits. They seek balance by weaving the Course of Fate through time.

However, man is a frequent disruption – some try to follow a course of their own choosing. Challenging the master spirits by pursuing the dream of freedom.

Existing in a spiritual realm, Time and Fate have no direct control over us, but instead manipulate our choices with thoughts and visions.

Time is a malicious spirit – haunting us with visions of waste, failure and ultimately death.

Fate is seductive – offering visions of another life – an easier life contrary to the struggle and anguish we face when we go against Fate’s wishes.

But in the end, their efforts can act to inspire the few to excel, and escape the binds of The Course of Fate.
