Xstream problem in Max

I'm having basic difficulties with the combination of Vue 10.5, VRay 2, and 3dsMax 2013. If I start a new Vue scene within Max, or open a Vue scene in Max, the Vray sun stops putting out any light. Vray materials are illuminated with indirect illumination only. If I turn off the indirect, then the Vray materials render black (or they seem still to get a little indirect from the Vue scene). I've tried all the settings for matching the Vue lights to the Max lights, without any luck. The native controls on the Vray sun have no effect (I can crank intensity up to infinity without making any difference). Adding another sun or putting in other VRay lights doesn't do any good. I have succeeded with one scene, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how it is any different from the ones that fail. Advice appreciated.
