CURVY - Skateboarding Bat (3D Animation Shortmovie)

Hello everyone,

We currently study media design in Hanover, Germany, and we proudly present our first 3D animated short movie.

A skateboarding bat named Curvy is too untalented to fly; therefore he tries to fill this gap in his life with amazing skateboard tricks. With his one and only friend, a chatty worm, he builds up a skate park in an old hangar and gets his former crush to finally like him...

Making of - Story
We created a small world around Curvy. Because of his glasses and brackets, that makes him look nerdy, and his weight, Curvy ends up being very unpopular and left out. Also, having tiny wings, he has absolutely no talent in flying, which doesn’t improve his situation.
Missy, the love of his live, is unlike him very popular and self-centred. She has no interest in outsiders like Curvy at all. Finally, the chatty worm, who is not able to shut up and does everything he can to get on everybody’s nerves, helps Curvy to build up the skate park.

In Addition to the three characters, we had two evil bats, which didn’t make it to the final plot. There Mission would have been to bully Curvy and turn his life into a nightmare. Also we had two additional sets, a forest and a bat cave...

However, we quickly realized that we had to leave some ideas out so that it would be possible to produce it in a period of one year.
While we were rewriting the story we decided to get away from telling a typical linear story. Now there is the main plot which is about building up the skate park, plus the skate session, with several inserted flashbacks. These explain how the characters met each other and why they behave like they do.

Making of - Design
Sadly, we both are not that good when it comes to sketching… Our Storyboard panels have strange framings and our concept paintings have absolutely nothing in common with our renderings.
When we think about design, layout and framing pretty much everything is happening in our head.
Max and Maya are our tools, where all the magic takes place and the characters come to life.

Rendering the fur was by far the biggest challenge! The fur tool in maya is a nightmare! So we switched to 3ds max with the shave and a haircut plugin. Still not that easy to handle, but by far better than the maya tools. A really difficult task then was to fit the fur rendering from 3ds max on our maya beauty pass… But the fbx exchange worked pretty well in conjunction with a geometry cache.
