A Space Adventure Project

Hey everyone,
I didn't come here for a while, I had even lost my previous account...
I hope my 3D skills have improved a little since the last time !

Just wanted to share with you a small summary of my "Space Adventure" project. Maybe some of you already heard of it : it's a kind of personal experiment where I tried to do everything all by myself, starting with a book in self-publishing, then a short film in 3D, and later a slideshow video game for PC... The result is far from perfect but some people seemed to apreciate the space adventure, so I thought it would be a good idea to share it here too !
What I can tell is that the whole project was quite an odyssey for me !

- 300 pages is the size of the book
- 6 min 15 is the length of the short film
- 10 hours is the estimated life of the video game, which has some very challenging puzzles
- 108 videos for a total of 25 minutes of animations in the game (includes all videos : menu, options, in-game, credits, etc...)
- 970 3D pictures (reworked in After Effects), used in 1 138 frames in the game
- 20 music tracks composed - the final OST is 18 tracks only.
- over 20 GB occupied on my hard drive
- 1+ month of production for the film
- 5+ months of production for the game = 160 days = 320 cups of tea (0 coffee !)
- 1200+ hours of calculation for the game (rendering) for the 3D videos = 120 nights without sleeping for my PC (core 2 duo, 3 GB ram, ge-force 9 256 MB) !
- 1 death : my 250 GB (2,5”) hard drive ! RIP

The book :

I won't tell you much about "The Black Tower" : it's all in french and I don't intend to show it publicly, but basically it's a sci-fi novel introducing Yan Forté, the son of a Terran astronaut who disappeared in strange circumstances 18 years earlier...

The short film :

So this crazy project started with my short film 2011: A Space Adventure.
I made it in september 2011 (4/5 weeks of prod) and it released on Vimeo only. It had been picked by the Staff and got over 80k visitors.

You can watch it here : http://vimeo.com/30395151
But I suggest you don't if you plan to learn more about the video game (read below)

Music by Karreo (karreo.com)
- Composition & SFX : Stelian Derenne
- Direction : Mathieu Legros Story :
"You're an astronaut sent to repair an old satellite. You just finished your mission when you notice a mysterious black cube drifting near you. You're totally hypnotized by this thing and suddenly jump in the space, breaking your security cable ! That's crazy, you seem to have forgotten all the dangers here, and when you finally catch this cube... your oxygen is low and you have no way to go back !!!
But strangely, to you, the most important is that you have this Cube in your arms, and that you won't drop it until you're dead ! It now seems so important and fascinating... "

This is not a sequel to 2001 : A Space Odyssey but some kind of tribute. The story of Kubrick's movie was supposed to take place exactly ten years ago. 2001 to 2011, I thought it was a good date to make something, even if it has no obvious relation with the original story.

If you're interested, I had made an interview for Ceiga Magazine after the release of this short film : http://ceiga.co.uk/blog/5-questions...nard/#more-3023

And finally...
The video game :

ASA: A Space Adventure is a Myst-like adventure game, where I made all by myself in 5/6 months (july to december 2012). Of course it's not the game of the year (it's a slideshow game) but I did my best ! ASA is made of 900+ 3D backgrounds and 25 minutes of videos and has an 18 tracks OST composed by Stélian Derenne (the composer of the short film).
ASA - the game - is a kind of explanation of my short film 2011: A Space Adventure (what happens in the middle of the story), and that's why I would recommend you don't watch the short film before playing the game - if you plan on playing it, of course !

For those interested, the game is available for 6€ (around $8) on http://www.aspaceadventure.fr
And there's a pre-beta demo too : http://bit.ly/SwdGAf

As it is an animation forum, you can watch some videos of the game here :

First trailer : http://vimeo.com/48809946
Gameplay video : http://vimeo.com/51905564
Launch trailer : http://vimeo.com/56252620

ASA (the game), like 2011 (the short film), is a solo project. It's built with the Adventure Maker software. I had many technical limitations so the display resolution is only 1024x420 (at least, it's better than Myst lol).
Though the game got good reviews, and if you like first-person adventure games, you might be interested ? It was rated 15/20 by the french magazine jeuxvideo.com and 4/5 on Adventure Gamers. Many people could also tell you that ASA is very challenging !

That's it !
