This "moon"-texture looks amazing! Did you find a good tutorial to do this? Or is all self-made?

Hey Roadrunner,

We have a lot of similar elements... I made the map with images gathered from within the Nasa Public Domain Photograph library... I clone stamped, altered and layered a few medium res images to make the one higher res one. Mess with blending modes in Photoshop. Later!

Hey nice work. The moon texture looks great. I am doing a sort of similar scene, well not really, with an asteroid backdrop, so your moon texture caught my eye. good luck.

This is the first time I have seen your thread and I'm impressed. The effects look really cool, can't wait to see them incorporated with the ship in the scene!

Keep it up

Post Effects and Compositing: color scheme test

Thinking of using a Tetrad color scheme... Orange, red, green and blue. I would like to have the smoke directly behind the ship but am afraid that it will look like it's emitting from the ship itself. I might do a vertical canvas, the shape of a book and move the smoke trail up above the wrecked ship. Will also add more, thinner gray smoke streams to compliment the foreground and make a small astronaut to depict scale.

Concept Sketch: Corel Draw 12 vector

Added a sliding crane to the light wing... This will aid my story a little bit more. I'll post it once I work out a few kinks...

Modeling: Lightwave render

Same vector pieces extruded and rendered in Lightwave.

Rendering: backdrop

This was a first try at the Mars background. Looked very flat and small, the use of bump maps is very obvious as well. Back to the drawing board...

Modeling: Valles Marineris

After hours of searching for at least a base start for Mars, I found this 5000 by 4000 Tiff of the Valles Marineris in the Nasa public domain library. Score!

Modeling: Valles part two

After a minute (or about three hundred of them) of clone stamping and leveling out the image... This was the final result.

Modeling: Valles part three

The airbrush tool in Photoshop was used to create a color map along with some dodging and blend moding...

Modeling: Valles part four

Here is the bump... Feel free to save these if you like... They should butt up prerfectly. (Mine is 5000 by 4000, insert smiley here).

Note the dark region in the upper left hand side of the image... This will be our asteroid impact crater.

Modeling: Valles part five

Here I traced the outline of the canyon in Corel Draw 12 to be extruded in Lightwave as an .EPS. (FUN!)

Modeling: Valles part six

The canyon covers about one fifth of Mars... I have like seventy percent of it and used that to determine the curvature of the red planet. I extruded the canyon, fused it with a extruded rectangle poly, sliced it on x and y segments and bent it.

Lighting: Valles part 7

Now this is starting to look like a slice of mars... A little more dramatic lighting is needed though.
