Gravitational Lensing

Ive been searching the internet for hours now trying to find a method of creating a toroidal ring distortion in an image. Specifically what Im aiming to achieve is a gravitational lens effect around an ellipse. Im looking to create a sort of portal whose edge would distort and refract the environment around it. This is the lens if you are interested in the physics.

I am aware of the "Gravitational Lensing Plugin" created in the late nineties, but it doesnt seem to work with CS6 unfortunately, also being a filter it may be limited in its application.

I was thinking displacement map but I dont know if that would work to create a ring... Please help! Im just a poor fool trying to make something surreal.

Have you considered using the filter > liquify tools for this? I don't know if you could get exactly the same refraction effect in the centre without some fiddling, but certainly the edge displacement would be easy.
