Superbad, Mike Thompson (2D)

Title: Superbad
Name: Mike Thompson
Country: USA
Software: Painter

This piece titled "Superbad" is the actor Michael Cera. The client wanted it to have a very airbrushed expressive feeling like the Mad magazine covers. I used Painter to create this. I have attached a few of my working files. All comments are welcome! Thanks.

Great stuff Mike. Good job on the likeness and overall finish. Cerra cracks me up, love him on arrested development.

The t-shirt and the hair are very realistic.

Beautiful work! Excellent technique. (added to favourites) Well, you definitely nailed the "Mad-cover"-look. +5

the rendering is amazing dude!!! its all perfect the only thing i suggest is that the composition might work a little better if you added a bit of empty space between the top of his head and the border of the picture, but overall its impressive!!

Thanks Shardana. I actually do have space in the finished piece, I just cropped it for my post here. You can see the piece the way I presented it to the client on my site.

It's all so well done. From the expressive eyes to the hands. You could really mess with people and put a little Olan Mills logo at the bottom corner. That would really throw it back to the 70's.

It's cool to see that we work the same way as far as working up a final line drawing to do this type of stuff. I know guys that don't even bother anymore and just paint over the photo. I can always tell though. Corel should be giving you tons of promotion for making their product look so good.

Do you find time to slush the real stuff around?

Amazing job. I like how much it feels like the character and that it has a liveliness to it. Can't wait to what you have in store for us next.
