Fresh Air, Michelle Boulad (2D)

Title: Fresh Air
Name: Michelle Boulad
Country: Australia
Software: Painter

Painter IX Wacom Intuos tablet, about 40 hours over the span of 6 days.

This is a portrait of a family member, painted as a gift.

Reference photo or can be found at http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i271/michelleboulad/freshairref_l.jpg

The photo wasn't much to work with, too low res and cut off on the right (I've cropped it further on the left for obvious reasons :) ), but I like the pose so much that I went for it anyway.

For the butterflies, I studied many photos of several types I like for the colouration and proportions, but ultimately didn't work with ref for the poses, it being almost impossible to find a good (not blurry) ref. Several are just from imagination or memory (the little blues, orange one upper left of figure and the cabbage butterfly).

No tracing, manip etc...just me an my graphics pen :D

Anyway, I hope you like it, comments and critique are welcome

A job well done In really like what you have done.
My crits would be maybe add more shadow to the nostrils.
also try adding some more high lights to the white of the eyes to make them look more glassy and wet. even if the REF image did not have this you should play around with your image.
do not be afraid ot emphsise cotrast and highlights such as oils on the skin.
I hope I was some help.

its a very nice job and a great gift.
Well done I will give you 4 stars for it.

Thanks for the C&C, it's very much appreciated.

I thought the highlights on the face might be to harsh with the light source behind, but it's meant to have very bright diffuse lighting in front, so perhaps you're right about adding more shine on the face...I want it to look summery

Thank you

Hey,

I agree with Lman. The shadows/highlights are missing, and it looks a bit flat. I guess few mor warm Colors will give a much more warm feeling to the picture.
The Hair looks cool, I like it. ^^
Keep up the good work!
