Black Bashi-Bazouk - Master Copy/Reference Work, Dan Silverman (2D)

Title: Black Bashi-Bazouk - Master Copy/Reference Work
Name: Dan Silverman
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

This was a master copy for Open Figure Drawing Workshop 017 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=360025). I chose this image by Jean-Léon Gérôme for a master copy because of the amazing details and the wonderful colors. Having never had any formal training and having never really worked on a full-scale digital painting, I believe this workshop taught me a lot!

hey, great work!
The mood is amazing, the colors also match the original!

Only things i have to crit are the low contrast andthe blur
Try adding a Brightness/Contrast layer

Anyway, good painting (4 stars) !

Thanks for the feedback! The blur reveals a major problem with this work. I tend to work entirely too small and this may come from the fact that when I normally paint I am creating skins for low-poly models. Often these skins (textures) are only 512 x 512 pixels or 1024 at the most. When I went to do this workshop, frankly, I did not know how this was going to turn out. The original image size was MUCH smaller than the one displayed here. I resized it larger for this thread, but the end result was some blurring. I will just have to learn to work with a larger canvas the next time .

Rebeccak,

Thanks for the plug on the tutorial! I hope it is useful to some people.
