Assassin's Creed E3 trailer matte painting, Benoit Ladouceur (2D)

Title: Assassin's Creed E3 trailer matte painting
Name: Benoit Ladouceur
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop, SOFTIMAGE|XSI

This is the final version of the openning matte painting for Assassin's Creed E3 2006 trailer. It was a lot of fun to do. It mostly consists of Photoshop work based on photo reference (thanks Francois for letting me acces your Scotland pics!! they where a huge inspiration!) and 3D rendered elements.
After the painting was done, it was projected back onto 3D geometry in XSI to obtain the camera move as it is seen in the trailer.

that's a nice and complicated work. so did you actually paint most of the foreground buildings yourself?

Working on Assassin's creed myself, I was totally floored by what your guys' team did for the trailer.
Amazing quality work. This matte opening the trailer was a great choice. Keep it up!

Wow !! great feedback guys thank you very much !! very appreciated...

elnady: thx !

alfy: I know... forsome reason it took a lot of time to get posted online in the forum after I posted this pic in my portfolio. Seems you got an advanced viewing... hope you liked it

SeifoSid: In order to speed up the process, most of the fortress wall and the church where first roughly modeled and textured in 3D in order to make everytihng correct perspective wise (and to test camera layout and paralax). The rest was built with a patch work of painting and photo elements... What took the longest was to repaint the light direction and mood so that it matched the original art direction and concept art. (and to remove most of the modern elements we usually find in city shots: satellite dishes, air conditionners, wires, etc...). Most of the reference pics I used where from Scotland, taken by a friend under a cloudy sky, with very diffuse lighting... ideal to start with if you have to add a light direction to a scene (you don't have to remove the old light direction before starting to paint)...

kbarts: thanks very appreciated...!

livingrope: The trailer came out really great !! The compositors made a tremendous job putting it all together... got to love those little touches they put in to help sell the shots. thx again for the great comment !

rawwad: thx ! very appreciated... I'm always a bit scared that what I do comes out a bit too painted and not realistic enough.

bearfoot: thanks !, yep... I'll look through my archived stuff and I'll post a screen grab of it very soon.

black|snow: (I'm going to start to blush !!) thx !!

pap87: two words, Thank you !

vyle-art: Wow ! a fellow co-worker from Assassin's Creed... Having seen only tid bits of concept from the game I can say that you guys' work is awesome... Can't wait to see more !! I think I'm going to go and talk to the people I know in your dept. more often just to get glimpses of more stuff... hehehe. Thks for the great comment !!
