Rescuing Areti, Dan Phyillaier (2D)

Title: Rescuing Areti
Name: Dan Phyillaier
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

This piece was inspired by my niece and nephew who have great fun "playing castle."

The story is that the Princess Areti was kidnapped and taken to a castle on the mountaintops. In the past this castle was spectacular, but has since been overtaken by evil and is falling into ruins. This painting shows the young hero freeing the princess as they escape from the tower.

The main things that I wanted to show are the hero's bravery as well as Areti's complete confidence in him. Also I enjoyed experimenting with extreme perspectives and the illusion of heights. Hopefully I was successful at these goals.

Comments are welcome. Thanks

I love this piece. The concept is cute. The poses and expressions of the children are great, and the detail in the castle buildings is beautiful. You've also communicated a cold, snowy feel well. Wonderful job

its a nice piece but i think the girl's pose doesn't really quite fit with the boy, i mean he's jumping across while grabbing her hand but she's just standing there smiling? i think she should be angled forward since he is pulling her while jumping across ...so she should be frightened? supprise?

Absolutely marvelous... superb piece. The general fairytale piece of "the hero saving the princess" would usually depict a glamorous young lady and a knight in shining armor, but this is a totally new angle to that idea, though still very fairytale-esque. I think you pulled off the heights quite nicely and it adds a lot to the whole thing, really. Awesome architecture! ^^ I look forward to seeing the next one.

Amazing painting! I love the technique. For some reason the children look like giants to me, but anyway, that's a great piece of work.

Well done!

Outstanding stuff! The level of detail and the intricacy of the shading reminds me a lot of Norman Rockwell paintings! Nice idea, and good composition and perspective.

My only comment is that the girl looks like she will probably fall to her doom! The boy is running, and just about to jump a chasm, whereas the girl looks distracted and motionless, but its a fantasy picture anyway, so that doesnt neccesarily mean that theyre actually IN that situation, does it?

Top notch work - hope you get frontpage with this pic
