Matte painting for my MFA thesis project
  02 February 2014

Very nice. I wish I could do matte painting (haven't learned how; wish I had the time; it seems like fun). Very cold, dark atmosphere for this piece (I almost thought it was a tribute to the World of Warcraft land in "wrath of the lich king"; since it has a similar feel to it). My favorite bit is the snow covered rocky formation that forms that little bridge (looks natural; has nice shapes to it; and I like the contrast between the snow and dark-colored rocks). The little, tall castle in the background seems insignificant compared to the natural landscape around it (I almost didn't see it at first). I like the transition of light from the incoming storm clouds on the left to the pale afternoon sky on the right. The trees on the left look good as well (nice sharp, rough contours; just like you'd find on a bare, dark tree in a mountain's winter range). Overall, it came out really well and should work well with your portfolio for your MFA (good luck with your thesis). Keep it up. Great job.

The light source from the top right, combined with the sparse, angular landscape on that side, sloping into more complex, dark and mysterious land is an excellent arrangement.

Inspirational stuff.

As ever, any technical or otherwise, insights into how you went about making this would be appreciated.

Thanks TheDarkInstall!..

I appreciate all feedback..this was one of my first times animating a DMP. After I photoshopped the MP together I then broke it up into workable layers for Nuke's 3D pipeline.
Here is the MP in action and if you open my Thesis Book PDF link on the page you can see more details to my process

Thanks again for viewing my work

the haze, the framing, the light gradient across...really nice work man
and the bits of snow in the wooden planks are a great detail. Works great in motion btw

Very nice image. I have not seen a lot of matte paintings that look as seamless as this. I love the way you have balanced the blue hues so they look relevant to each other.

One small thing that makes this image lose it's realism for me is the right side horizon. If you look through the tunnel the horizon is very flat, almost looks like sea level. I think the right side would show some mountains similar to the left side because a huge mountain range similar to the alps doesn't goo flat on the horizon unless it is going down to the sea. Even if it were going down drastically it would still show huge hills befroe going flat. I hope you don't mind me mentioning this.I think this is an awesome piece but it just loses it's reality with that one are for me. Fix that and it will look totally realistic IMO.
