Olympus Mons, Michael Dashow (2D)

One of the San Francisco Bay Area's steampunk conventions (we have more than one, lucky us!) is Nova Albion (http://steampunkexhibition.com). The con theme this year is 'Steampunks in Space!" I did this for them. I thought it was about time I illustrated a steampunk male for a change, and I've always been tickled with the idea of dirigibles on Mars.

This was all done in Photoshop, but I modeled the airship, the HMAS Copernicus, in 3DSMax and painted over it in Photoshop.

I just adore the idea that this man is smoking his pipe on Mars through a very original contraption. It made me grin

Great characters! The rock they're standing on is nicely done as well. So was this designed as a poster for the convention? The background seems suited to having text over it.

Thanks, everyone! Glad you like the small details.

Ben, I knew the theme for the convention and I knew that they needed art to support it, so I just volunteered to do something. They didn't have any specific guidelines, but I did specifically leave lots of room for whatever they wanted to print on it. They ended up using all the space that I gave them and using it as a poster, as you can see here:
