A personal piece made made for fun. I kept having an idea of a nice cartoon character with a bit of a darker twist =) Modelled and rendered in Max with Mental Ray and Vray and passes composited in PS. Comments are welcome. Thanks!

like it a lot

just i don't like the rim light in the left side - try to use a fall off shadows and dark shades rims

the rim light on the right side very nice - and the color scheme
good work

Well, it all looks really nice to me. It would be even better if the character had a visible mouth. Without a mouth, it looks like a huge bubble gum bubble or something. He needs a mouth.

There's quite a gothic romantic air about many of the original drawings and stories, you should add a ruby peeping out from the hat

I also agree that there should be some sense of background, Tove's illustrations are very atmospheric in nature, it doesn't require a very detailed background, just the suggestion.

Thanks for the c&c! To anyone who doesn't know what a moomin (troll) is:

So you can see that moomins do not have a mouth =) Also this wasn't used as my only reference because the way that the Moomintroll is illustrated has changed quite a bit over the time, so what we have here is just my vision.

All very good points, guys. About the background; I had a Burtonesque (can you say that?!) moon glowing up near the right corner, but as I wasn't 100% sure it actually added to the picture I left it out. Now if I added a background it would be a hint of a forest with hattifatteners (just google it).

Oh, and Per-Anders: funny you should mention ruby peeking out of the hat as that's exactly what I had in mind at some point =D Might even do that and update it to my portfolio page...

I really like the lighting mood and the SSS effect ! For which passes did you used Mental Ray and V-ray ?
