Dragon Foetus, Thomas Feiner (3D)

Title: Dragon Foetus
Name: Thomas Feiner
Country: Sweden
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay, ZBrush

For the Gothenburg International Filmfestival. A dragon foetus, alluding to the festival's dragon logo. Photo pioneer Lennart Nilsson's images of unborn babies were used as inspiration and reference. A lot of research on the anatomy of eggs also went into this. Challenging to weigh cuteness against dragon-likeness etc. Vray didn't quite manage the kind of translucency/SSS I wanted so I had to make two separate renders and comp them.

Really excellent.
To be sincere, I like better the SSS of the baby dragon, and a bit less the transparency of the surrounding egg (these are nuances; it's a superior work anyway); maybe this comes from the comp work you speak about.

Great job! The research really shows through. Such a great refreshing take on "a dragon". I don't think I've ever seen this attempted like this before. Which for 3D says a lot! Keep up the good work.

Many thanks for the feedback! Regarding the frustration with the the Vray fastSSS2: It distributes light fast and beautifully, but the drawback is that smaller nuances, like blood-veins etc, just won't show. Whereas the regular vray material in refractive mode would reveal the smaller interior details but look less good in general for some reason.
