Cowboy toon, Luis Arizaga Rico (3D)

Title: Cowboy toon
Name: Luis Arizaga Rico
Country: España
Software: Photoshop

It's a cowboy cartoon character in 3D. Everything was done from a 2D concept design I did before.
This full scene and others will be delivered to students in my digital art course about characters for animation at Digital Rebel Academy. Also you will find free 3D models to download for the CG community in my site:
I hope you like it and find useful the characters.

I must say that the software used was Blender for 3d and photoshop/gimp for 2d. Sorry for the mistake. I check the other programs but for some odd reason didn't appear

Love it! If I had one crit, it would be that making the background a little darker (or less interesting) would help bring out his silhouette, as I find it a little lost at the moment.

Great work!

Ey! Thank you everybody! I'm very very happy you like the old cowboy
Thanks for the comments and crits.

I would like to add some images of the making of but I don't know very well how to manage attechements here. I will find how.

I think someone could find interesting the hair or the curved bones option in the rig setup.

I love your cartoon characters Luis! Really great.

How did you render the hair? You didn't use strand render right? I have some difficult to manage shadows in the hair sometimes.

If I was doing some critique, I would say that the ground it's a little bit too flat and maybe the saloon it's a little empty. But nothing that spoil your work.

Hi Lucas,

Thank you. Here I've attached an image that shows a little how the hair is controled.
But of course there's more info to consider. Light, materials and the vertex paint influence are very important.

To achieve the light scatter effect and the anisotropic reflection. I used some little visual tricks. The main solution is in the material. I didn't need to use Translucency. Instead I used SSS to control the light scatter and Transparency with a ramp map in the color and alpha to control color and transparency in the tip. So you don't need to use "strand render".

I hope you find this interesting. I will try to upload some files or more screen captures.
