Unbiased renderers like fryrender (what he used) take more time than a traditional renderer, but they create wonderfully realistic images. And they do it incrementally, reducing noise with each pass. This means you keep it going until you are comfortable with the noise level.

In his case, he decided to wait a whole day to have it perfectly clean (you can't see a bit of noise in those renders), but a 12 hour render would probably not show much difference.

SolidSnakeH - this is fryrender effect, you can simulate lens effects like aberrations, aperture shape glares, bloom, dirt on lenses.

HapZungLam - Fryrender is very, very stable software. Long time renderings aren't problem

I'd echo the comments about the curtains but the lighting is just gorgeous and the attention to detail commendable.
