Okay, I'm still kinda new to working with polys. One thing that I'm having trouble with is getting the hard edged curves to smooth out properly. For instance, how do you go from this

to this?


How do u get the roundness to come out of those jagged edges?

I'm using MAYA, btw. But I'm sure the methods are still pretty much the same between packages.

I'm working on a truck cab for a project and am having problems smoothing it out in the right places.

This is the rough poly model. You can see the hard edges on the rounded corners. I need to get those smoothed out so that they flow nicely. Any tips?

dave_baer : Actually the difference between those two meshes is that the wire one is at step 0, while the rendered one is at step three.
Basically roundness in edges comes out when u apply a proper subdivision step, Probably you modeled your truck cabin but u did not apply a subdivision modifier at all....i don`t know how Maya operate...
By the way, a general recommendation about edges when operating with subdiv surfaces is that if u want a sharp edge u should increase the subdivisions/steps around the edge, while if u want rounded edges u should not increase the geometry around it.

It may be easier to help if we saw a wireframe of the cab...
My first thought would be to use the soft/harden edges...

Select the edges that you want smoothed, then Edit Polygons>Normals>Soft/Harden edges and choose the degree of softness you want...

Other than that, you can add geometry...

(I don't know what level you're at so excuse me if you've tried this already)...

Yeah, I tried the soften/harden thing. What u see is the result of it. I guess Im going to have to build up the gemetry on it is all. thanks guys.
