Perlman, Lee Davies (3D)

Title: Perlman
Name: Lee Davies
Country: Ireland
Software: ZBrush, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop
Submitted: 23rd January 2014

This started off as a quick zbrush sketch of Ron Perlman as Hellboy, which sat unfinished on my machine for ages until I eventually got the chance to revisit it. -After watching Sons of Anarchy on TV, I decided to portray him as Clay Morrow instead (as there seem to be lots of Hellboy tributes already). It's been a while since I've had the time and opportunity to concentrate on a personal foilio image, so I had a lot of fun with this one. Comments welcome!

Wow! This is pretty awesome. I like the references to Hellboy on the bike. Grats!

Ha! Great character. The purple-hued lighting seems a bit out of place though, considering the hdri is visible in the reflection of the headlight fairing.

Great job mate.

Thanks for the comments! Dan -you're absolutely right about the hdri; I considered swapping out the map I used, but since I wasn't aiming for realism -I let it slide. Glad you like it, Cheers!

Excellent work!
i have a question, have you used a HDRI to light the scene or just for the reflections? can you share your lighting setup, i couldn't read your technique for lighting !
Again congrats, Awesome details !
Best,
Ismail.

Thanks!

Thanks Mohamed!

Tim -It is indeed I spent a while looking at various tattoo websites for inspiration. -The two I picked are actual real world designs.

Phil -Cheers for the support as ever, -nice one! Ron Perlman is a gift to caricature; he's got one of the most distinctive and easily recognisable faces in Hollywood.

IsmaiL: The HDRI was used primarily for the reflections on the shiny/chrome parts of the bike, although it does provide illumination for the scene as well.
Ron is lit by three main spots/mr area lights, (nothing fancy), whilst the background is mostly illuminated via hdri/final gather (with an additional small spotlight to pick out the hydrant from the shadow).
I also applied a couple of small spot lights in other areas to pick out details such as the wrench, forearm and sock, but these provide no notable scene illumination.

Finally some minor tweaking was applied in post using photoshop to tweak overall colour balance etc, but nothing too elaborate.
