Thanks

I'm also curious about GI. I mean, look at Half Life 2's "Source Engine"

doesn't 8 256x256 = 2 512x512?

oh one more thing, isn't 4000 polys a little low for a game level? and if I model a scene, can I have 2 characters? One the iconic character and another a antagonist? would the antagonist be counted in the character's polys or have 4000 to him self?

Oh, I have another question, is it ok if someone else does the concept art?

I was thinking that too. In UT2 you can have alot more than that.. around 50,000 if I remember right. In HL2 it will be even better probably.

I have a question concerning the line between Character, and vehicle.

In the case of Panzer Dragoon Orta, the dragoon AND the rider are the main character to me, so I was wondering if a character / pet combination would be allowed as a submission for judging as a singular entry. If so, I take it the poly count for both character and pet together could not exceed 4000.

yes. and no.

concept art can be used as a base for this challenge...and that is encouraged.

no. the model does not need to be in an actual engine. the focus of this challenge is on the aesthetics and not the tech behind the engine format.

btw - I have max 4 and a plugin for normal mapping, which I really hope to use, but max 4 doesn't have support for a hardware shader that supports this AFAIK - anyone know how I can preview the model with dot3 bump mapping?

do you mean environment map or specularity map...sometimes definitions get confusing...

please explain. thanks.

only one person can enter a submission for final judging.

if you want to, I do not see why not.

you can render the final model out however you like...but having a clear shot of the model and its mapping helpos the judging process...

true GI is not used ion games today, but it is often faked and done in other ways. photon mapping, monte carlo raytracing, stencil buffered shadows...etc...

so yes feel free to use GI [if you must] for your final render

[note: ** any guy can click a GI button, but it takes a real artist to create great atmospheric lighitng - but then agian, this is not a lighting challenge! ]

make him [or her] THE delta force soldier. the hero, or the turntable villian. you decide.

not for final judging. you need to be fair to everyone else putting forth a solid solo effort.

50, 000 - 75,000 for a level

sorry. missed putting that in there the first time. rules are now updated.

[can you tell i am not a level artist? the polycount totally slipped my mind! ]

if you are given two 512x512...take it. that means higher resolution bump maps, spec maps, etc.

the 256 option only remains cause I must have brain-farted while I was hammering out the rules with lil Dragon at 2am the other night.
