Chad will be showing work from a Cartoon Network piece and some work that was done for Target. He's going to run us through the process, and then to open up the floor to questions. Decided to focus on composition and lighting in this challenge since those are the things I am weakest in. Believe it or not, had a wooden Stegasaurus sitting on my desk which my dad got me from a nearby Pearl which is going out of business. As soon as I saw the triceratops I knew their love was meant to be.

I've always wanted to do a Christmas environment (and boy is THAT out of my system now!) When I saw the dinosaur model I thought he would look cool wrapped in lights... Here is the final image.
I manipulated the dinosaur a lot to get it in a more dynamic pose. The rose is kind of "gift garnish". Everything else in the scene was modeled by me, for this challenge (in Maya.)

This is a photo of my desk object, a sock creature named Newton.
Here is my masterful concept sketch.

Its been a long battle involving head aches,day dreaming and naps but I think i may be done. Its funny how picky us artist can be about our work..lol any way ill start by showing a picture of my work area. I chose to use my old Acrylic paint set from high school as the my third object. The next stage was finding a workable composition to fill in negative space. My first vision was about having the scene, on the top ,of a building but then I decided to go with a sand box scene instead. I played with some shader styles and I eventually got my end result. CGS Chicago 3D Mini Challenge #1

Objective: Create a single rendered composition out of three objects

• Object #1: Flower (provided)
• Object #2: One of three childrens' toys (provided)
• Object #3: Something from your work area

Rules:

• Must have a WIP from initial idea to final rendering
• Additional models are acceptable, but the focus should be on the three primary objects
• Model you create must be a new model (nothing you've modeled before)
  • Take a picture of your workspace object and post that in your WIP

Judging Criteria:

• Modeling - 15%
• Lighting - 15%
• Materials - 15%
• Camera - 15%
• Overall Composition: 40%

A Few Thoughts:

• You could choose to set up the images like a still life and focus on lighting and composition of the image
• You could create a story using the objects and convey it through the camera lens
• Until we get a separate category for the challenges, start a new thread in the Chicago Chapter. Title of the thread should be "3D CHALLENGE #1 - YOUR NAME"
• Final image size can be any aspect, but constrain the longest dimension to no more than 1600 pixels
