Hey guys, i'm a webdesigner currently studing cg modelling and animation at the Veiga de Almeida university here in Brazil. Altought its the very best cg animation program available in Rio, i'm very interested in studying abroad and eventually, make my way into the industry (the jobs opportunities around here do exist, but they pay little to have your soul and they don't care about quality, just want some "3D stuff" made asap).

Since i already have some background with 3dsmax and zbrush (not much, i'm still attending the post graduation program and i'll graduate around march or april next year), i'm having some doubles about which program would be best for me.

One my teachers recommended the 6 month program for two main reasons: 1. it's way cheaper them the one year program and more focused; 2. what i'm learning right now is enough to attend the 6 month program and doing the one year program would be a waste of money (which i do have, but it's pretty much all i got saved so far).

Another teacher did attend the 6 month program and strongly suggested that for me, but he said and i quote: "...if you want to just go and come back, do the 6 month program. But if you intend to stay and work there, do the one year program so you can get the work visa. The 6 month program does not give you that!" - just another thing to make me go crazy with this double

So, this is what i got: i do have some background with cg, my plans are to start at VFS (august or october next year) after my graduation here and i do have time and jobs until there to raise more money. More important, i will have spare time in this period to practice even more and enhance my skills.

That being said, what you guys would recommend for me?

Thanks in advanced

Of all the things I've ever wanted to do, Wait. Let me rephrase that, the only thing I've ever enjoyed or been exited about were video games, From the age of 5 playing Super Mario on my brothers emulator. Now I'm 15 and its time to start thinking about what I really want to do with my life. The only thing I could come up with is game design and since coding is never something I'd want to do, I chose art. What I'm looking for is someone who is truly passionate about concept art and 3D models. I'm not picky, any style is fine. I just want to learn something. Being 15 I can't pay much, But any money I do make would be instantly directed to this project.

There is nothing I'd be more devoted to then this and I have almost unlimited time to practice.
If I have to be up at 4:00am count me in.

If you are interested in helping me become what I've always wanted to become,
Hi, I'm considering signing up for DAVE School (The Digital Animation and Visual Effects School) in Orlando, FL for the fall. Does anyone have any reviews or experience with them they'd like to share? Another question is, how did you go about obtaining loans and what lenders are recommended to pay for the 12 month program?

There might not be too many people who have info/personal experience here, but I'm looking for some actual people who attend, attended, or have knowledge of schools in Texas with amazing art programs. I'm not expecting anything supreme-like, but a school that actually teaches fundamentals, has a great record, and it's a stretch, but possibly something to do with computer animation as well. I want to do mostly concept art and have been reading it deals with traditional art more than computer animation so I've been looking for advice on whether to go for the CA degree or Illustration. Anyone here to help out?

Hello people !

Is 3d animation and visual effects program in VFS worth doing ? I mean I was going through other animation programs ( not to mention about Animation Mentor, i animate, anim school, Scad, ringling, etc. ) , but found out that they are the only ones which provide an intensive 1 year program. Actually, I already have an experience in this industry since last 2 years as a character animator. So, I was wondering that if anyone could help me in deciding about a good school for 3d character animation. I am very much confused. Please help me to get of this troublesome situation asap !!
Is anyone here in the new Themed Entertainment Design MFA program at SCAD?

I've been accepted and have been really struggling with the decision of whether or not to go. I get a range of answers about SCAD in general by Googling, etc, but no one is talking about this program yet.

I know it just started as a grad program this past fall, but was hoping someone in the program was on this forum so I could see how they were liking it so far. I have great reservations about going into a brand new program before the kinks are worked out along with it costing so much money.
Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to this site as a member but I've read a lot over the past year. I'm currently in 10th grade and live in New York, but I'm graduating a year early so I will be in college at the end of 2014. VFX and animation is my dream and I don't see myself doing anything else. My first year of college I'm going to a community college and getting a traditional art background, but my natural talent is above average, but not amazing. After I'm looking for the right college to go to. My first choice was SVA in nyc but i saw an ad for Full Sail and I read about it and it looks good. Which school is better? I'm a hard worker and will devote my life to VFX at either school. I've read some negative things about both schools yet both had positives as well. Which is more reputable and a better education for me? My goal is to work in a huge studio on feature films, but I haven't decided whether I want to go the animation way or VFX way. What do you guys think? Thanks to all replies.

Hello CG Community,

My name is Josh and I recently graduated from an undergrad school with no real program for animation or design. I am very passionate about computer animation with a focus on 3d modeling (not really interested in 2d stuff) and possibly rigging and I really want to work in the field. I am more interested in the art side of things as opposed to the programming side and I am also more interested in animation and modeling for tv shows and movies rather than video games. I recently got admitted to both Drexel and Depaul's Masters program and I am unsure which one to go to they are both equally weighing the same on my mind. So I am looking for opinions on which one I should attend!

Drexel is much closer to home, more expensive by about 10,000, ranked higher by Princeton Review, and seemingly has more connections for jobs after college. But the courses do not seem as specialized to animation and modeling and rigging as the courses of Depaul.

Depaul is much farther away, costs less, ranked lower, but it seems to have more focused courses on what I really want to learn. But I do not think it has as many connections to studios and companies for post grad careers an internships as Drexel does and Drexel is more well-known.

PLEASE HELP ANY OPINIONS WILL BE GREAT!!!
And is there a difference between Masters of Science and Master of Arts in terms of after graduation?
Hi, My name's Chris and I'm looking at going into the games industry as an environment artist. I've been looking at SCAD's game art & design course, but I also live right down the road from the University of Alabama, which has a good bachelor of fine arts program. My technical skills and understanding relating to 3d art are pretty good at this point, and what I lack are traditional art skills. My question is this: is a degree focusing on games really that beneficial compared to a standard degree in fine arts and a good portfolio that's relevant to the games industry? I may be in a position to get a full ride to UA if I get my ACT high enough, so I could major in fine arts and minor in computer science or programming or something, and in the meantime continue to build my CG portfolio.

The pros to taking the UA route would be that it's close to home, I may not have to pay anything, and if I minor in computer science that would make me very marketable in the games industry and elsewhere, the cons would be lack of networking, and that I'd have to do a lot of leg work to connect what I would be learning to what I want to get a job at.

And the pro's and cons of going to SCAD or DIGIPEN would pretty much be the opposite, in that, the course work would better prepare me for the games industry, but it would be far from home and potentially very expensive.
