Join The Foundry and Gnomon School of Visual Effects and celebrate the release of MARI 1.1 on Windows and Linux.

About MARI

MARI is a creative texture-painting tool that can handle extreme projects. MARI was developed at Weta Digital to handle the massively complex, highly detailed look development work demanded of the texture department by projects such as District 9, The Lovely Bones, and Avatar.

MARI has a creative toolset which puts many stand-alone 2D paint systems to shame, allowing artists to concentrate on painting.

The Presenters

We’ve got three fantastic guest presenters to show us how they’ve been putting MARI through it’s paces in the real world of production. Gnomon Alumni Brandon Fayette & Jake Raymor from Bad Robot Productions will show us their hard surface and organic structure painting techniques live. Scott Metzger from Method Studios showing how MARI was used on the latest Lexus Commercial and Brad deCaussin from Digital Domain.

Brad used MARI extensively on Avatar at Weta Digital. Now at Digital Domain, one of the first studios to adopt MARI, Brad will be showing us some past and present uses of MARI in production. We’ll give you a sneak peek at the MARI product road map too.

Alien Invasions. Cities ripped apart by catastrophic disasters. Super heroes locked in mortal combat with super powered villains. Does this sound like another summer blockbuster? No, it’s just a typical night on television.

Learn about the rigors of how to create feature film effects on a broadcast budget and schedule from the VFX crews of two of the most ambitious visual effects shows on television:’Heroes’ and ‘V’. Supervisors, producers, and artists from these two hit shows will take us step-by-step through planning, shooting, and executing thousands of shots per season, sometimes working on six episodes simultaneously. Using examples from some of their most complex sequences, you will learn how storyboarding, pre-vis, and the ability to adapt quickly are the keys to success in creating stunning visuals on a shoe-string budget. You will also see practical examples of realtime on-set compositing, which many believe to be the future of our industry.

The program will be followed up by group Q&A session.
Presenters:

Mark Spatny
Supervising Producer, Stargate Studios

As Supervising Producer for Stargate Studios, Mark Spatny acts as head of production for the company, as well as personally producing and supervising effects for NBC’s Heroes.

Within the entertainment industry, Mark has worked hard to bring recognition to the artists behind the scenes by helping create The Visual Effects Society Awards, and is currently serving as its co-chair. He is also a Governor for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. His work has been honored with two Emmys and one VES Award.

Eric Grenaudier
Senior Visual Effects Supervisor, Stargate Studios

As Senior VFX Supervisor for Stargate, Eric travels the world representing the company on its biggest projects. Whether shooting in the jungles of South America, the beaches of Malta, or locally in Los Angeles, Eric puts his talent to work creating some of the most visually stunning effects seen on television.

Eric has won two Emmy Awards and two Visual Effects Society Awards, as well as the Hollywood Post Alliance Award, and Canada’s Leo Award.

Andrew Orloff
Executive Creative Director, Zoic Studios
