First, I think that movie is great. Fantasy creatures all over the movie.. mann love it as a child, love it as an adult.

I should choose the battle between the Griffon and the Centaur, but I don't think I will have the time to spend on two fur creatures. I will miss the opportunity to study fur creation in ZBrush but Hey! I'm young. lol

I choose the Figurehead of Sinbad ship for four main reasons:

I never sculpt wood details

I never sculpt woman

I never sculpt a ship

I love the scene but not the animation on that one

CURRENT UPDATE

Bit nervous about this one, as I last entered an HMC about three years ago, but I was upset at hearing the news of Ray's passing that I wanted a chance to remember him from when he was first starting out in Hollywood.

I originally wanted to do a diorama of Mighty Joe Young holding an Orphan in a Tree ablaze, but I'm not that good enough a modeller. Sad, as after years of searching high and low for a copy of MJY, it was only on the night of hearing of Ray's passing did I get to finally see MJY for the first time via the internet. A special film as it was Ray's first big break into Hollywood, and I was amazed at how daring and technically difficult the animation was for that film. I am sad I cannot attempt such a scene, but thats how it goes...

However, I will instead go with Ray's first solo big screen adventure with the Rhedosaurus from The Best from 20,000 Fathoms. Its a simple B-Movie, but its the first film where Ray stood on his own two feet and began to carve out his own Legend in Cinema history...I also have very fond memories of The Beast' as my late Grandfather used to play it for me and my brother as children. In some way, we were close to him and Ray in the same time. This will sound silly, but the passing of Ray hurts as he reminds me so much of my own Grandfather. Actually meeting Ray in person back in 2004 makes it even more difficult to accept his passing.

Anyway, I'm sorry to go on in Ted Striker fashion here, so I will wrap up by saying I will be using Silo for modelling, 3dsMax for additional modelling and rendering, and after the contest, Blender for Character animation.

I would like to thank Roberto Ortiz for making this exception to the HMC rules in respect for Ray. It means a lot.

I dont know if that's exactly whats intended for this challenge in terms a character IN a film, but I hope breaking the 4th wall so to speak would still be a viable entry?

For you Mr. Harryhausen.
A tribute to the master.

When I was a kid my Dad had a Beta Max with 3 tapes that we watched over and over again until I had every line memorized, Star Wars, Caddy Shack and of course Clash of the Titans. Ray's Medusa scared me so bad when I was a kid. What I love more than anything was not just that he created these creatures but that he took the time to inject real life into them instead of just moving them around.

I'm going to create an accurate film version of Medusa and then hopefully rig it and create a little stop motion myself. Well that's the plan anyway. I have some other things planned if time permits.

My version will be somewhere between the film puppet,

and this excellent 1/6 scale paint job of the Geometrics statue from Chris Wauchop.

As usual I have some ulterior motives for this challenge. I'm going to use what I learn on this project on a much bigger production coming up.
Good luck everyone.

Who is Ray Harryhausen?

From imdb.com:

"When it comes to motion picture special effects, there is only one name that personifies movie magic - Ray Harryhausen. From his debut films with George Pal to his final film, Harryhausen imbued magic and visual strength to motion picture special effects as no other technician has, before or since."

.... (His name) becoming synonymous among sci-fi and fantasy film aficionados with top-notch special effects work the remainder of their respective careers. After three sci-fi monster films and work with Willis O'Brien on an Irwin Allen documentary, Harryhausen did the effects work for The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), his first split-screen film shot entirely in color, which was highlighted by Harryhausen's mythological monsters interacting with Kathryn Grant, Torin Thatcher's flavorful performance as the villain and the rousing score of Bernard Herrmann.

Because Harryhausen worked alone on his stop-motion animation sequences, the filming of these could often take as long as two years, the most famous example of the kind of patience required being the exciting skeleton sword fight sequence in Jason and the Argonauts (1963) (his most popular film) in which Harryhausen often shot no more than 13 frames of film (one-half second of elapsed time) per day.

The 1960s were Harryhausen's best years, among the highlights being his reunions with dinosaurs in Hammer Films' One Million Years B.C. (1966) and The Valley of Gwangi (1969). His pace slowed in the 1970s, but he produced three of his masterworks during that period: The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974); Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977) and Clash of the Titans (1981). It was not until 1992 that Harryhausen finally achieved film immortality with an honorary Oscar, a long-overdue tribute to the one name that personifies visual magic

Because of his outstanding contributions to the visual effects field, and helping to lay the foundation of the modern VFX film, Ray Harryhausen has been chosen as the first vfx master we will tribute.

There are three ways to participate:

Single Creature:You can pick whatever creature you wish from the attached list at the end of this post.

Creature Series:This type of entry requires you will try to do as many creatures as you can from an individual film.

Bust :This type of entry requires you will try to a bust of your favorite creature, or a likeness of the master himself.

For example you may choose to sculpt as many of the creatures from the film Clash of the Titans as you can: Calibus, Pegasus, Bubo, Medusa and the Kraken.

THE CHALLENGE:___________________________

Sculpt one or more representations of Ray Harryhausen creatures in 1 month (See the provided list). The idea of this "mini-challenge" is to simulate an impossible dateline for a project. The artists will have at their discretion how detailed the models they will be working on, and the amount of models, and if the models will be shaded/ rigged. But the model will have to be Ray's interpretation.

For example an entry might call for a Medusa, but the artist will have to sculpt a Ray's screen interpretation from the classic film Clash of the Titans.

A big part of the challenge is that the modeler will have to scavenge all the reference for the film models. But at the end of the challenge the creature(s) have to look like the one shown on film.

CAN YOU DO IT?

What is the HARDCORE MODELING CHALLENGE?

The idea of these HARDCORE MINI CHALLENGES is to push the modeling skills participants while learning from the past. To get past preconceptions of the limits of digital art. To push digital artists into the world of sculptors & artisans. But we will have variety on these mini challenges. Sometimes we will sculpt a model based on a masterpiece, but on other times we might do Jet fighter or a landmark....

The only thing that will be consistent is the SHORT DATELINES.

At the end of the challenge, the participant should have a finished collection of entries. Keep in mind contest of high difficulty you will have ONE MONTH to do the challenge, but the rewards, even if you don't win, will be your improved skills in speed and accuracy.

EVALUATION CRITERIA:______________________

Detailed RESEARCH, and attention to detail are key for ALL entries. Please before doing an entry do your homework.

The best model will be selected by an open vote
for these categories:

Most Accurate Creature Representation

Best Diorama

Best Render

Best Creature Series

Best Bust (if we have more than 2 entries in this cathegory)

Highest Number of FINISHED models

Best Overall Entries

The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

NEW DATELINE! Monday, July 1st 12:00 PM
YOU HAVE One MONTH do the challenge.
