Hey guys
Here's the deal. I'm preparing to start an online workshop and I need a secure video hosting to publish lectures.
Ideally it should have password protection and per-user watermarks. Animation Mentor has a great system, I need something similar. Can't find anything like that though.

Maybe there's some payed service everyone uses which I don't know about?)

My producer thinks I'm a moron because I can't manage these .igs files we got from a vendor. One of them is 996MB. I've opened stuff from this company before, they model every screw, every tab, even the logo imprinted on the metal cases, it's all very heavy stuff. Does anyone have a trick for dealing with .igs? The 996MB took 4 hours to open (it does hang for most of the time though) in Rhino on another machine, and it exported an .fbx overnight at the lowest possible "detail level" (Rhino's words). It chokes any machine I try to use it on. I've got 32GB of RAM. Does AutoCAD handle this stuff better? I mean, if it takes 4 hours just to open, what are these people using to actually WORK on these files? I can't even move the editor, I just hit export and pray.

I graduated from college 2 years ago with a BFA in animation. And for those past two years (aside from 6 months for family reasons) i've been searching for a job non-stop with a couple freelance gigs here and there. In order to give myself more opportunities while still living in a relatively affordable environment I moved to Chicago. While not the greatest for CG jobs, its better than where I was, and I can't afford California or NYC.

Since moving here about 8 months ago I've managed a couple interviews, and in every single one i've been asked the same question. "What have you been doing"? What they're really saying is "What have you been doing related to 3D computer graphics art/animation"? Its a tough one for me to answer, and I'm not even sure what to say.

The last time I did a 3D animation was the last week of October and I moved out of my parents house the first week of November. Then slept on the floor of a friends bedroom for 3 months where I wasn't able to do much of anything. Then moved into an apartment in February. Because of financial reasons the only computer I have is a nearly 7 year old Mac. Needless to say it doesn't run like it once did, and i've been unable to do any 3D work with it. I'm currently working a part-time job that barely makes anything so saving up is almost impossible.

When this question comes up in interviews I try to explain my situation without sounding like i'm making excuses. Its like I haven't done work because I don't have money for a new computer, and I don't have money for a new computer because I don't have a job. If someone were to give me a decent paying job I could get a new computer and do all the new stuff you want me to. Its a total catch 22.

This got kinda long, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this interview question or what I should do? And getting a loan is out of the question

Hi all!
I don't post much these days, but I'd like to share with you this page I've made to help estimate render times, no matter what software you use etc.!

The first calculator is (of course) just an estimate - based on the best estimate of a frame you can give.

The second I've found its pretty handy for rendering a sequence overnight or to get a test out to a short deadline.

If you have any suggestions or ideas let me know!
I noticed on here and other professional CG related forums that anyone who uses Blender is considered a bad artist.

I know your industry only uses $3K software and above. I know you guys work hard to compete for the few $5 hour, 14 hour work days. I know you guys are brainwashed in considering anything your corporate masters give you is the best.

What I don't understand is why everyone considers Blender, and the people who use it for art lesser artists.

Now, because Blender is free, I understand there is going to be a lot of people who are not very good, but what about the best of the best of the in the Blender community?

So I ask these questions to the pros:

1. Are the renders in Blender always going to be inferior because the program has limitations compared to your $3K+ software?

2. If not, are people who use Blender simply inferior?

3. In a full-blown animation, would the average public notice the difference in quality?

Hello,
I am really curious what kind of market pressures affect the price of VFX software.

Let's take Maya for example. Here* I see Maya 2014 for more than 3,500 dollars for a perpetual license. Ten years ago when I would ask about the high price of the software people would just tell me matter-of-factly that it was simply a cost of doing business. That was when the ratio of possible earnings to cost of software was much higher.

Now when cg artists are having their wages reduced significantly to the point that many are barely covering their own costs of living, can these prices still be viewed as reasonable? What would have to happen for the prices to go down?

Hey guys!
So I go to Fullsail University, I really like it, I want to be a character animator. I just had a session with my instructor that really opened my eyes on what its like to be an animator. I don't really think I am cut out for it/have the paitence.
I really want to be a part of animation, but maybe not the actual animation itself. What kind of jobs can I do in a studio?.... I really like managment, I am organzied and would love to oversee projects/pipeline. Can I do that without really working IN the pipeline? I am a decent animator, but I realized this may not be for me.

/ˈɪnkyəˌbeɪt, ˈɪŋ-/ Show Spelled [in-kyuh-beyt, ing-] Show IPA verb, inˇcuˇbatˇed, inˇcuˇbatˇing.verb (used with object)
1. to sit upon (eggs) for the purpose of hatching.
2. to hatch (eggs), as by sitting upon them or by artificial heat.
3. to maintain at a favorable temperature and in other conditions promoting development, as cultures of bacteria or prematurely born infants.
4. to develop or produce as if by hatching; give form to: His brain was incubating schemes for raising money.

Welcome to the IP Incubator Club
The idea behind this Club is simple

POST WEEKLY UPDATES of Original IP that you are developing. Hopefully IP that can eventually help the creator generate some income.
Also you should provide CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK to the work posted by other posters of the club.

The idea of this "Incubator Club" is to get away from the gloom and doom and provide a lifeline of support for our fellow artists.

The artists will have at their discretion how much they wish to share on the projects they are working on, what program they will be using and the medium . But the IP HAS BE AN ORIGINAL CREATION.

YOU HAVE ONE WEEK TO POST AND UPDATE..

There are 3 ways to participate:

IP CREATOR
Post bi-weekly updates of ip you are developing.
Some Examples:

A 3d artist developing a line of Vinyl toys on ZBrush

A game developing working on a mobile game that uses Geo spatial data.

An Artist working to update his porfolio

A group of animators animator working on a weekly web series

But If you post your idea, please provide feedback on other's ideas.

IP REVIEWER

Provide reviews and comments of the IP being developed.

I am looking for people like Roger Eberts of the world and not the Simon Cowels.DIVAS will NOT BE TOLERATED.

IP MENTORSHIP
An experienced artist/ develop can offer mentorship for the IP creators.
Some examples:

An AAA game developer looking to help upcoming talent

Experienced feature animators could review game animations.

Writers can comment on story points

ANYONE CAN JOIN.

DEVELOPER CO-SPONSORS
My wife is a social worker and she suggested the idea that we use a SPONSOR model similar to AA. The idea is to match developers with individual sponsors. People whose responsability is to monito the progress of a specific project. The sponsors would be fellow developers. It would be their responsibility to provide support and provide guidance to the developer from an outsider's point of view. I'm not advocating "mentorship" where there usually is an imbalance of expertise/knowledge between two parties. Rather, I envision sponsorship to be a vehicle for peer support, for consultation between and among artists who each have valuable tools, experience, and knowledge to share. Sponsorship is method for both parties to learn and grow professionally and perhaps personally as well.

Hey folks,

I've been training to become a 3D character artist (I'd like to work in both production and game art).
I'm still a beginner though since I have a lot of things to think about during the day.

I have a simple question and I know that there won't probably be a definitive answer but I'd be glad to hear opinions.

I love Zbrush and I like to start modelling directly into it. Now with the advent of 4R5 it has become even more powerful and independent.

1) Would you guys think that it'd be possible to work entirely in Zbrush with professional results?
2) I mean retopology, texturing and rendering without switching back and forth with other programs?
3) What about companies? Would they look at you as lacking fundamental skills (e.g. in Maya/3ds max etc) or they'd just be interested in the final result?

Thanks!
