Hello,

I was wondering if there was anyone interested in contributing to an open source (source only, media is artists') game called Sauerbraten ( http://www.sauerbraten.org/ ). Basically, this game has had the same models used since the game first started - as Cube 1, 6 years ago.
Since, the game has been struggling to receive artist contributions - only a very few helped out. One of the big problems caused by that is the outdated look of the game - most textures and playermodels, hudguns (the list continues) look simply old. It makes the game look older than UT2004 while the Sauerbraten's engine is much more technically capable.

So what the developers are requesting is your contributions. You can make pretty much anything, as long as it is good to include - with high detail and good quality looks. That is why I came here - expecting to find generous people.

So far the engine is by far the most advanced in the open source market by its features. So don't let the guys down!

Anything that you make should have a license attached that would allow re-distribution of the content with the whole package - you don't have to give all the rights away.

You can contact eihrul, Aardappel or just talk (about specifics) to anyone else in the Sauerbraten's IRC channel:

irc.quakenet.org #sauerbraten

Currently, weapon models are needed that could both be displayed in 1st person and re-used in 3rd person view:
pistol, shotgun, rocket launcher and other weapons. Monsters in the Single Player mode. The current player model (ogro) is being slowly replaced by ironsount (a much more advanced model), who still needs skinning - skinners are welcome. Models must be in MD3 (oh, not much difference from MD5, don't give excuses!)
Any high resolution/quality textures that would be suited for maps and are free would be appreciated a lot too.

And of course, if you don't like making models - Sauerbraten in-game editing functionality might be just what you was looking for, for some time!

Official CubeEngine forums' thread: http://cubeengine.com/forum.php4?ac...&thread_id=1488

With your help, Open Source gaming can evolve!
Contributions = Happy Developers = Better engine = More popularity = More happy people

I enjoy doing Mini Challenges, but they seem to have disappeared. So I'm going to put a weekly mini challenge together Starting on Sunday nights and going right on through to Saturday nights. If you like the idea of the challenge feel free to jump in. I've got an idea for this week to get things rolling, but would love input. Submit an idea here in this forum and we can use them for future challenges.

I'm going to try not to limit things to much so we can all be creative. An example would be:

Pencil
* Poly limit 30 tris
* 4 texture maps 128x128 (1 256x256) each Color, Bump/Normal, Spec, Diffuse
* Hardware render one light

that's just an example, the challenges will be more challenging items like weapons, characters, and environment assets.
No prizes, just bragging rights and even though the challenge is only a week long feel free to take more time just note the time it took you.

Also wondering if anyone is interested in battles, a one on one or team vs team challenges. Were the two opponents battle for the best Concept, Model, and Texture. One point each team with the most points wins. Your peers would be your judges.

Ahh... what the hell. Im in. I might have to sacrifice the girl, the family and some serious drinking, but Im in

I hope I will, for once in my life finnish!
This is the concept:
Based upon The Doors: Riders on the storm. I first heard it in Snoop Doggs version, but the original is just as cool in every way.

Not a guru, with the Wacom, but I hope you get the idea.
The game should be something like Mario-Cart. With different characters from songs and bands. Each genre of music the gamecharacters are based on, should have a level dedicated to them with different advantages. Example: Some kind of heavy-death-metal level, where Marylin Manson and the like have advantages. It could be extra speed packs, meaner weapon packs, or muscling up the char in some other way.

Questions and/or comments welcome (and motivating!)

So like I said on the main UGAC thread, I am making a Dark Pixie for a fantasy setting like Warcraft. She's inspired heavily by Industrial rock and the goth culture that goes along with it. I actually had the idea at the CCP & White Wolf party at GDC. Anyways, on to concept sketch #1:

I'm thinking I might design her to have variations of hair/makeup/clothes, so essentially you can get some customization out of the same base model with different textures and different hair/clothing models. I'll post more as it comes to me.

MGAC:
WEEK ONE [April 2nd-12th]: Character Weapon
WEEK TWO [April 13th-19th]: ???
WEEK THREE [April 20th-26th]: ???
WEEK FOUR: [April 27th-May 3rd] ???

MGAC Guidelines:
All MGAC’s challenges are limited to 1,000 triangles and a total of 2x 1024x1024 worth of texture space. They must fit in with the current theme and also follow the UGAC guidelines [see UGAC thread].

ENTRY/SUBMISSION:
Unlike the UGAC, you will not make your own thread but reply to this MGAC thread and post your w.i.p. shots here. The when done, edit your own post and upload your final entry with…

wireframe view w/ polycount

real time view

texture sheet

…beauty shot is optional. Please try to limit the size of your images and try to combine the wireframe/real time image into one.

DEADLINE:
11:59pm PST on last date of each week posted above. At that time, I will post a comment in the thread declaring the challenge over and asking for the judges to start judging.

__________________________________________________ ___________________

UGAC+MGAC:
You are allowed and encouraged to work on both UGAC and the MGAC challenges. Also, you may use your MGAC submissions in your UGAC and the polycount won't count. Example: you model an Undead Elf for your UGAC challenge and you model his Bow Staff in the MGAC. When submitting your final UGAC pictures, you’re allowed to show him in his beauty shoot holding the bow staff [but you don't have to report the polygons/textures sheets in the UGAC submission].

JUDGING:
MGAC will be judged only by people who submitted entries in the current challenge. You can only pick one other person’s submission but you can not pick your own. When the challenge is over, I will post a comment in the thread declaring it is over. Once you see that comment, you can begin judging. Make sure the first thing you type is the winner’s name [in bold text]. You may then also critique and comment on other people’s submissions.

Your game studio has decided to make a game based on/around music. Pick some music that moves you and translate that into a video game asset. It could be Ludwig Van Beethoven as seen in a fighting game, Ozzy Osbourne in a cart racing game, or Eddie Van Halen's “Frankenstrat” as a robot. You decide what music, what style, and what game genre your entry will be from.
They will also look at the wireframe and see if it could have been optimized to save on the final poly count. The will also look at how effectively you used your texture space. Alright! Continuing the fine tradition of vehicular modification comes "Pimp my Piper!"
I have been given a lovely new Piper Supercub, however they forgot to paint it for me...

You can texture it so it looks like a traditional Supercub, a wrecked one, an impractical one, a hippie one, military, space etc.. the texture style is up to you.

- Time Limit: a little over a week - Due midnight Friday 16th
- Texture Limits: any number of 512x512 maps, spec, diff, bump, normal etc
- Don't modify the model

heres a pic:
