View Full Version : HCM #31: Pixar Tribute: Russell

06 June 2011, 12:47 PM
Russell from movie Up!

Hi gang! Finally that challenge has start! My First ever challenge in 3D.

I love pixar movies like you. I choose Russell character for many reasons:

Funny character in spirit
Lot of different items to model
Lot of different shaders and fabrics on it
I hope to do my best with Russell. Keep his spirit! I will start today as my offday. I had take one week (the HMC 30 extension) to gather all the items references.

I will use Softimage, Zbrush and Photoshop

06 June 2011, 01:29 PM
cool choice man....
would love to see you in action...:)

06 June 2011, 02:59 PM
will you participate?

06 June 2011, 03:03 PM
i think, i am in

06 June 2011, 06:34 PM
I start with accessories, because there a lot of them on Russell back (

06 June 2011, 06:56 PM
Nice choice, I love this character.

06 June 2011, 08:47 PM
Maybe try to remake the noise pattern if I got time (

06 June 2011, 11:05 PM
you are fast ..good job

06 June 2011, 11:19 PM
MGC: Thanks man! So many to do ;)

06 June 2011, 03:20 AM
Looking closer on his gear, I see many of those snap hook on Russell (

06 June 2011, 08:58 AM
Very clean and fast work here so far!
Great character choice too!

What are you rendering this with? MR? If yes, you might want to consider giving 3Delight a shot instead. It's free and may give you a the right Renderman-ish feel for this challenge. ;)

06 June 2011, 11:54 AM
Ya mentalray! but ya I would try your renderer because Softimage don't work with renderman and because it's a Pixar Tribute.. Why not use there renderer!

06 June 2011, 12:01 PM
To clear things up for you, since I am getting the feeling you did not fully understand my suggestion. 3Delight is a Renderman-compliant renderer, creating a similar look as Pixar's very on Renderman, which indeed is not available for Softimage. But... luckily 3Delight is filling that gap and available for free download as a 2-thread version from dna-research here ( I havent tried it in Softimage 2012 yet, but was told by support that the 2011.5 plugin works fine for 2012.

06 June 2011, 01:57 PM
Oh ok, I tought you talking about a standalone software

06 June 2011, 05:16 PM
I begin to think I'm going too deep in modeling for a pixar stylized look. So I will slow down. The items are so far of the camera (but i love details) (

06 June 2011, 12:48 AM
Some artefacts in the anisotropy that I will correct later. (

06 June 2011, 04:16 PM
You're fast, I love what you've modelled so far, keep up the good work.

06 June 2011, 04:42 PM
thanks chichiri i will

06 June 2011, 06:07 PM
Clean models and awesome presentation as well, good job :applause:

06 June 2011, 07:22 PM
Clean models and awesome presentation as well, good job :applause:

Thanks Rogin, I used to be an infographist before start 3d modeling, so I always bring presentation to my modeling.

Few items to go:

Cooking bowls
Water bottle
Swiss Army Knife

06 June 2011, 08:52 PM
Man! So many Wilderness Explorer Stamp everywhere! hehe I most buy some action at wallstreet tomorrow. (

06 June 2011, 12:55 AM
Very simular to the cooking kit but Russell have that, so.. (

06 June 2011, 05:42 PM
I feel like redo some shaders and add details. And also add Ambiient Occlusion to those I didn't already do. ( ( (

Seem thoses artifacts still live! (

06 June 2011, 06:56 PM
good work & presentation. All the best!

06 June 2011, 10:13 PM
Hi Scote, really good start ! nice wireframe and présentation. I can't wait to see the next steps :)

06 June 2011, 01:08 PM
Thanks everyone. This week (dayoff start wednesday) I will finish the main gears (swiss army knife, water bottle and cords) and finally start Russell body so I can resize the gears from his final proportion.

I think I will do the pose like this one:

Well I gotta to help cross something!

I like the pose on that moment. If I got time in that two month (surely) i will try to reproduce a part of Mr.Frederickson entrance for a baseon Russell model.

Maybe you have better suggestion for me for pose?

06 June 2011, 01:33 PM
Sounds awsome and looks great.

06 June 2011, 04:52 PM
nice updates !!! man

06 June 2011, 03:22 AM

06 June 2011, 11:50 AM
outstanding accessory, great job !
Can not wait for the suite

Thanks man. I will try tonight to end the main accessories. I'm a bit off of the others guys.. I start by accessories.. but my idea is to keep the main mesh of the end.. I live for the credo:

"Start with the boring things and finish with fun parts"

06 June 2011, 01:16 PM
good job mate. I see you are moving on really fast.

Very clean work. keep it up ;)

06 June 2011, 01:28 PM
Thanks lapachi. I'm just a student who want to improve his modeling speed, so I'm glad to hear people comments on my speed.

06 June 2011, 08:59 AM
Well, not only are you fast, but your work appears high quality as well, so it looks like you're safely on the right track. :)

06 June 2011, 11:55 PM
This is one of the main image I used. But The WE marks are missing. Maybe a sketch from them or a fanbase.

This is the main screenshot of his back from the movie I used a lot

06 June 2011, 12:18 AM
. .

06 June 2011, 09:02 AM
At long last. Should be cool.

06 June 2011, 12:34 AM
Great thread, reminds me of how awesome and fun our jobs are.

06 June 2011, 10:43 AM
Thanks a lot guys!

I will restart Russell this Tuesday

I work 4 days a week, never do 3D a day of work (because i'm all day in front of a screen). So that's why you never see a WIP between Saturday and Monday.

I think the next move will be the body and the backpack in low res.

06 June 2011, 01:21 PM
Hey there Sam,

My advice, do a quick low rez mesh of Russell's body, head, hands and legs, all togather. Let it be very low one, just to see the overall shape and proportions of character, try to make it a close as possible to the real Russ, and than move on to detailing it.

This would be the best way IMHO in this case.

Cheers bro, You can do it ;)

06 June 2011, 12:01 PM
Ya i was thinking of that.. one mesh for all the parts (head, shirt, shorts, legs, hands and shoes) and one mesh for the backpack, one for the kesthief

06 June 2011, 02:54 PM
I decide to finish the gears before start Russell mesh (

07 July 2011, 04:20 AM
The water bottle was simple. Subsurface for the bottle. Next the cord = Zbrush time (

07 July 2011, 02:41 PM
Ahah I lied! here the Swiss army knife! (without tools!) (

07 July 2011, 03:08 PM
Really realistic objects, really cool!

07 July 2011, 03:11 PM
Your hard-surface models are looking great.

Time to start on the organics eh.
Even if you don't like the result, better to have a starting point that you can improve on.

07 July 2011, 03:24 PM
I know i know, but there is so many hard-mesh to finish, liek I said: I keep the fun to the end.

Few to go before Russell mesh:

WE Flag
Buttlefly net
WE Clasp
WE Handbook
I just order the Art of Up! for some more references and also one more book in my collection

07 July 2011, 04:36 PM
A little model for fast modeling before I want an afternoon of gaming between friends (I have to justified myself) hehe (

07 July 2011, 04:36 PM
I receive the Art of Up! Be prepare to mass update this week!

07 July 2011, 05:52 PM

07 July 2011, 03:55 PM
 Now i understand why you said wall-e was an easy one...

Great work! looking forward to see Russell finished.

07 July 2011, 07:42 PM
 Now i understand why you said wall-e was an easy one...

Great work! looking forward to see Russell finished.

Thanks man, but it's hard-modeling, just technical. The real challenge for me will be the Zbrush part, don't have work with it, just a little but again, i will learn it in the process

07 July 2011, 09:39 AM
Continuously inspiring work here!

ZBrush takes a little practice, but once you get your head around it, it's really no big deal. So don't worry and just start playing around with it. It's all you really need to do to get to know it better and the sooner you start the faster you'll find it like second nature. :)

07 July 2011, 04:43 PM
This is looking great cant wait to see russel

07 July 2011, 08:59 PM
Thks fused!

07 July 2011, 12:26 PM

07 July 2011, 05:48 AM

07 July 2011, 08:18 PM

now i'm ready to start in Zbrush (I end the training today (Gnomon dvd intro to ZBrush4))

07 July 2011, 01:02 AM
Scote those props are exellent dude .Really great .Russel is coming along really nice as well .I cant wait to see you finish this .

07 July 2011, 09:03 AM
Scote those props are exellent dude.

thanks fused.. I know that i start fast but now I need to restart fast too because the school opens in 3 weeks.. no time for challenge after that. 3 weeks for me too finish sculpt and texture/shader

07 July 2011, 06:04 PM
I really enjoy watching your work-in-progress. Russel is turning out really nicely!

07 July 2011, 08:12 PM
Thanks John, Hope to finish it before schools.. hope to finish the sculpting at less. It's a modeling context after all

08 August 2011, 07:13 PM
Ahh so easy with Zbrush. My school don't offer Zbrush course before the third years. I take the gnomon dvd and now I'm so glad! :) (Ad for Zbrush 4, please pay it!) lol

Here the med-res of Russell. I remove the backpack for now. (

08 August 2011, 02:53 AM
- Add the backpack for general look (

08 August 2011, 05:48 AM
Awesome! He is looking really good!

08 August 2011, 07:32 AM
Coming along nicely, good job.

08 August 2011, 04:45 PM
Thanks guys.

I think he look good but without hair he look like Charlie Brown lol

So maybe I will add some hair mesh for now, but I don't want mesh for the final, i will render real hairs

08 August 2011, 08:01 PM
I feel like continous to model some props

08 August 2011, 08:24 PM
Good luck with ZBrush! I can fully empathise with the learning curve right now :D
Can't wait to see updates!!

08 August 2011, 12:18 AM
Très bien! It is getting really well.
Aren't the shorts a little tighter on his legs?

Keep it up! :applause:

08 August 2011, 01:09 AM
T'as peut-être raison ;)

08 August 2011, 08:18 PM
I feel like don't modeling today. I do some adding in the shading. and of course I create a wooden base for my model (Inspire by Henry (HP)) (

08 August 2011, 01:43 PM
This is really nice modeling. Very "hardcore" !

08 August 2011, 10:53 AM
Thanks man! very appreciate the comment. I hope to have some votes, so I can be enough proud of my first zbrush mesh.

Really funny to start a challenge and hoping be class in the good ones but without the zbrush abilities for a hardcore challenge.

2 weeks before school, so 2 weeks to go for me. Hope to add the most of the details this week and textures/shades the mesh the last week.

I wonder if my trophy base is the best color? what do you think? less brown and more red?

08 August 2011, 09:44 PM
I particularly like the color, just the way it is right now Scote!
Nice Job. I can't wait to see the final render!

08 August 2011, 02:06 AM
1 vote for the brown!

well 2 with me ;)

08 August 2011, 07:46 AM
Very Nice Scote.

Like the overall shape of the character with all the details of it. I see you've put a lot of attention to the proportions of Russ, and it looks pretty sweet !

08 August 2011, 02:36 PM
Thanks lapachi!

I want to specialise in character modeling when I finish school, so need focus on proportion!

08 August 2011, 04:41 PM
C'mon Scote, hit that ZBrush!

Looking good so far. Keep at it.

08 August 2011, 05:39 PM
Hehe ok, well i'm a little bit afraid of the program when I don't fully know it

but I will try

08 August 2011, 10:21 PM
I start! lol the face, neckler and the cap. Not HD but it's a start (

08 August 2011, 04:07 AM
Nice model Scote and the two views image is very nice and clean. Congrats!
Do you think you will give him some color?

08 August 2011, 06:59 AM
looking good.

08 August 2011, 09:53 AM
Do you think you will give him some color?

Oh this is not the final model! i just add everything I done for now and render each time I define something.. so of course I will add some color.. the accesories will look less evident with russell polypaint and pose.

08 August 2011, 09:55 AM
Ahah just figure out my profil subname: know it all! ahaha when did I get that? lol

08 August 2011, 10:48 AM
Oh this is not the final model! i just add everything I done for now and render each time I define something.. so of course I will add some color.. the accesories will look less evident with russell polypaint and pose.

All right then, keep it going!

08 August 2011, 11:11 PM
Scote you now know it all .Cool man .Let us in on some secrets then .Goood Job I am really liking this .

08 August 2011, 10:41 PM
Nice Job on Russell!

08 August 2011, 11:40 PM
Well, russell turn to lost is pixar look. All the thing are there, but I lose the form.. Maybe it is just become he don't have hair ;) (

08 August 2011, 12:07 AM
Scote this looks really good dude .The hair and missing buttons on the pelt are the only things i can see .What else can i say but I think I didnt win .Nice man .

08 August 2011, 03:14 AM
Thanks man, I'm a perfectionnist, so i don't like it .. by nature ;)

Tomorrow i will try something, stay tune

08 August 2011, 03:30 AM
Oh! he IS looking really good indeed! the hair will add to his resemblance and his main characteristic was (is??) his positivity (sometimes too much !!), so we are used to look at him smiling.
But you have a neutral pose here, so when you give him some expression that should make it IMHO.

You r almost there!

08 August 2011, 01:21 PM
well I tought to pose him confuse like i said.. but it's a fact that he smile 90% of the time.. the positivism attitude.

08 August 2011, 01:27 PM
missing buttons on the pelt are the only things i can see

Where thoses buttons on the pelt??

08 August 2011, 01:52 PM
Here around his chest in this photo

08 August 2011, 02:40 PM
Oh ok you mean Badges and button on his shirt! you say pelt.. Russell has no problem with his skin lol

08 August 2011, 02:53 PM
Well when i say pelt usualy that would be the belt around his chest .Thats ok .Everything else looks great man .I think he would be allot of fun to rig an animate for sure .great Job so far.

08 August 2011, 06:05 AM
You are doing well Scote.
Keep up the good work!!

08 August 2011, 11:32 AM
*his face should be a bit more fat:

*and you made him look sad, make him much happier (change the expression on his face, make the shader warmer, if you're planning to model the medals thingies on the front it'll add a lot).

good job so far

08 August 2011, 03:19 PM
well I will do that pose then.

You are all right about the sad attitude. Let's make him happy

08 August 2011, 07:17 PM
Well the more I add texture the more I really don't like him lol (

08 August 2011, 01:29 PM
Maybe you should try some diferent lighting on the scene. Also, his skin is so greenish. Maybe you should add some orange tones:

Probably that's the "pixar-feeling" you're missing there. Also, don't forget to work on his cheeks.
The model looks awesome right now, and if you could bring this "pixar-feeling" to him, it would be incredibly awesome ! :)

Keep the good work

08 August 2011, 04:04 PM
Ya thks i will.

But for the skin.. well i'm colorblend lol i will sample the color of one of the ref. pictures

09 September 2011, 01:49 PM
Well I don't have the time to finish like I would like to. SO here my last update of a russell character: (
