View Full Version : Quadruped Rigs

I am having a question regarding quadruped rigs. I am at the beginning of creating a rig for a stylized dog character. So far I have been searching this and some other forums. However there doesn't seem to be many quadruped tutorials / tips&tricks out there?!
Maybe someone knows some good techniques he would like to share (program doesn't matter) and / or some tips what to look out for when creating a quadruped rig?
I am also looking for good reference sites other than the ones listed below.
Thanks for your help!
some links I found on CGTalk covering animal locomotion:
http://www.oricomtech.com/projects/legs.htm - "scientific" details about animal locomotion
http://www.junglewalk.com/frames.asp - cool reference video site
http://web.inter.nl.net/users/anima/chronoph/muybridge/links/index.htm - muybridge stuff
http://www.paintedthorn.com/tut_rigs.htm - some demo quadruped videos
http://www.animationmeat.com/4leg.pdf - notes regarding 4 legged creatures

i dont have any links to quaduped rigs yet, however, in terms of reference for animals i would definatly suggest "animal anatomy for artists" fantastic book which you can buy from amazon

What I could sugest is start the rig then post if you have any problems. I have done 4 leged rigs before but unfortunatly I cant show those. But I will gladly answer any question for you..

I saw this on 3dtotal and it seem quite good. It's a DVD on animal motion reference.
Hope I'll see your animation soon....

Thanks you all for your help!
nottoshabi: I will happily make use of your offer (although I am pretty sure you don't use XSI, right ;)) Very much appreciated!
I will post my findings when I start the rig (that is in 2-3 weeks) First have to finish my storyboard.
cfinley: I have had a short look at it - seems pretty good . thanks.
