View Full Version : HCM #30: Classic Movie Poster - Conan

04 April 2011, 03:55 PM
So depending on Roberto's answer it will determine which Conan movie poster will do. I am thinking the destroyer right now but here is each poster.

04 April 2011, 10:10 PM
hehe a classic poster there - good luck!

04 April 2011, 12:55 AM
I'm sure that will do. That a classic movie and a old painted poster. That's match!

04 April 2011, 04:32 AM
@intervain thanks and same to you
@Scote yeah going to go with the Conan the Barbarian poster its more dynamic then the Destroyer poster.

Here is my first update.....started with zspheres and got some jacked up hands and feet. I can never seem to get 5 fingers/toes or faces to come out the way I want them. I fixed the hands and feet some in max for the time being and will be using a sphere to start the head.

This is my Zsphere rig to start and where the mesh is now. (

Here is the update its starting to look better. I worked on proportions so he is looking more human, but his arms still need a lot of work. (

04 April 2011, 04:17 PM
Great choice man, I genuinely love this movie. Some of the best Schwartzenegar dialogue ever created. Best of luck.

04 April 2011, 07:09 PM
This should be great, very good start. I look forward to see more, best of luck. The proportions look great, its one of the hardest things to model if you ask me so great work. Regards Anders

04 April 2011, 06:03 AM
@Timrozek Thanks and hopefully the poster turns out well
@aovesen Thanks, I am really trying to nail down his proportions so its good to hear you think they look good.

Here is the latest wip....nothing huge some tweaking to the proportions and work on the hands and feet so they don't look so bad. I still think the arm and shoulder area needs some work along withe the lower legs and hamstring area. (

04 April 2011, 01:05 PM
Ya love the last change. best perportions

04 April 2011, 03:38 AM
@Scote Thanks

Here is the latest update tweaking anatomy etc and a close up of his sword. I am going to start blocking in some of his other accessories, work on the face so it looks like him, and tweak the anatomy a bit more. Then I will prob start posing him and work on the girl. (

04 April 2011, 04:59 AM
Had some issues with his sword so only have a body/minor face update but here it is. (

04 April 2011, 05:58 AM
Did some more work on his anatomy and face, its looking better but I think I need to force myself to work on some of his accessories etc so I can get him posed etc and actually make the poster. Here is the wip. (

05 May 2011, 04:44 AM
Working on Conan's pose some still have a lot of work to do before this challenge is done.

Having some trouble with my images staying up of late sorry if you do not see the wip (

05 May 2011, 02:13 PM
Cool pose.

I don't know if you want to same pose of the poster.. but HIS right leg is more flex and upper then your pose.

05 May 2011, 02:25 PM
@Scote Yeah I am going for the poster and you are right about the legs. I have a few general perspective things to fix up on him along with some anatomy tweaks for the new pose.

05 May 2011, 02:53 PM
Cool keep going because Arnold is the man! we have the forget the fame of the new Conan to come ;)

05 May 2011, 12:45 AM
great poster and kick ass movie, if you need more anatomical reference check out "Pumping Iron" it has loads of footage of Arnold. Keep up the good work.

05 May 2011, 01:21 PM
@scote Thanks yeah I am running out of time but I do want to do him justice.
@Sampei I really do need to watch that

Here is the latest didn't get to work to much on him but I did do a very rough Valeria. (

05 May 2011, 05:01 AM
Did some more work, spent to much time on his sword since you cant really see it. Added some other props, and for some reason I guess I made him skinnier, which I am going to fix soon. Here is the wip (

05 May 2011, 07:11 AM
keep up the good work mate, one of my favorite posters, had it on my wall for years!

05 May 2011, 01:41 AM
nice update, I like the sword!

05 May 2011, 04:13 AM
@Agatanga Thanks, I hope I can do it justice
@greenpizza Thanks, The sword could be a nice model just by itself If the proper time was spent on in it.

Here is the latest wip didn't get as much done as I was hoping this weekend, going to really have to push this last week, since I won't have much if any time this weekend. (

05 May 2011, 06:27 AM
Here is the update on Conan, did some more work on Valeria but its no where near where it needs to be. (

05 May 2011, 07:17 AM
good going! the fingers around the sword are too big though..the pinky touches his wrist

05 May 2011, 12:21 PM
really nice sculpt, Keep going man!

05 May 2011, 08:21 PM

I want to see the final lighting of that!

05 May 2011, 05:04 AM
@AgaTanga you are right and thanks!
@Tombery Thanks!
@Scote Its going to end up being lit in Zbrush and then tweaked in photoshop some I think. I will prob paint the background to look like it is.

Here is the update (

Another WIP tweaking away. (

Looking amazing so far!

Only thing that is looking out since the start is his waist looks too wide by about 15% or so.

Near the beginning it felt like the whole model was about 10% too wide, but now it's almost perfect except that part... just needs to taper away from the top of his chest to his waist more I think.

05 May 2011, 04:43 AM
@mr Whippy thanks I didn't get to slimming him up, I moved this past weekend, so pretty much only tightened up his belt hopefully that helps the issue you where seeing. Thanks for the feedback.

Final shot: (

Hehe, looking good :D

Just one more crit, but not sure if it matters. If you will be showing off the side/back, the womans bum cheeks look a bit weird... surely they should be a bit smooth, they look really muscular :curious:

Not sure what they were like in the film now, but tending to think if they had looked like that I'd remember ;)

05 May 2011, 11:57 AM
Chris I think you did an awesome job. I'm sure I could find things to criticize about, nit picking and what not, but AFAIC the final models look excellent. Strong poses, nice detailed sculpts, and the chemistry between the two characters is quite pronounced.

Thumbs up for sure!

Mr Whippy
05 May 2011, 02:12 PM
Yes, you are right Rage, sorry if I'm nit picking Chris!

If I could even get to half that quality I'd be very pleased with myself.

The work is stunning!

Just my eyes are naturally drawn to womens bottoms, and hers looked a bit iffy, thought I had best mention it just in case ;)

05 May 2011, 02:29 PM
lol I just realized how my last post sounded. It wasn't directed at you mr whippy, not at all. i just meant I personally could be nit picky but found it, for me, not to be as important as how the final image looked. Sometimes i feel differently.

My apologies I did not intend to offend.

05 May 2011, 02:35 PM
Haha, no worries.

I think sometimes I can write things and not emphasise enough the positive comments :D

It's amazing work. It makes me want to pick up Zbrush and have a go (not done so yet, the shame :( )

05 May 2011, 03:24 PM
@Rage and Mr Whippy, thanks for the comments! I am ok with nit picky feedback, any feedback is helpful so no worries. I focused on the poster shot for the most part and didn't worry to much about the other views but its something I plan on fixing in the future so go ahead and comment. In general this is the most feedback I have gotten on a piece and am very happy to have it so thank you again.
