View Full Version : Dominance War V - 2D - Ian-F-McIntosh Goddess of Rebirth

I wasnít sure if I was going to participate or not because I was finishing up another project which was taking all of my time. Since I am starting a little late I decided to do 2D instead of a 3D character because I think it will be easier for me to meet the deadline. Being mostly a 3d artist, I also thought that I would challenge myself with something a bit different since I havenít done a lot of 2d paintings.
About the Goddess of Rebirth:
After centuries of war, hundreds of thousands of innocent lives have been lost. All of these innocent souls have amassed over time waiting for the right time to reemerge and start life anew. All of the fierce battles of the great Dominance Wars of the past have faded into history an all that is left is a post apocalyptic world where the only survivors are a few wretched creatures struggling to survive under the blackened skies where all natural life has ceased to exist.
Now the time is ripe for a rebirth of life. In a blinding flash of lightning from the heavens, more powerful than any terrestrial lightning bolt, the souls of the innocent have finally coalesced and materialized as the Goddess of Rebirth. It is her purpose to wash away the blackened ruins of the old world and usher in a new era of life and prosperity.

Here are my thumbnail sketches to try and figure out the character. I think I'm pretty happy with the second one.
The idea is that she is very flower-like. Her hair is actual petals. Also she is weightless and about the size of a redwood tree (although that doesn't come across in the thumbnail paintings).

I did a fairly quick sketch in my sketchbook to help block out my painting. Instead of scanning it in, I just used a camera (faster). I plan on changing this quite a bit, so this is just a starting point. I am very open to feedback and ideas, so please donít hesitate to give me your constructive criticism! Thanks.

Yesterday I started to paint over top of my sketch. I think I might add some small luminescent crystal-like flowers on the vines at some point but first I am going to try to clean up what I've got so far before I add too much more detail.

Nice work so far. Like the idea of a godess of rebirth.
I think you can put a forest or a lot of trees in the bottom foreground, to make enphasis on the big size of the godess, the rebirth action and contrast with the dark background ( totally cool with the destroyed city and ruins :) ) Perhaps some ive style tattoo on the body and a crown on the head. Only silly ideas :D
Good luck and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

I really like position and perspective.

Thanks for the cool ideas! I will take as many ideas as I can get from people so keep them coming! I will definitely be adding to this image to try to sell the massive scale of her because right now she is feeling too small. I like the idea of a crown, but I will have to find a way to work it in naturally. I don't want her to have any man-made costume items, everything on her should be raw and naturally occurring.
I also am thinking about maybe making her pregnant to better fit the type of god that she is, but am not sure. I will have to just try a version like that to see how it looks.
I also might just get rid of her feet and have her legs transition into thick vines to tie her into the rest of the vines.
Anyway, there's a lot left for me to do but I thought I would post this cleaned up WIP.

Ian, I like the concept and perspective, your update is looking good, I think you could add some water floating to get the sense of her power and light rays from the sun, that would be cool. Cheers :)

I like the concept, especially flower like hair - as if ready to be polinized to create multiple instance of her self reborn.
