View Full Version : Dominance War V - 3D - [mad-one] - God Of Insects

04 April 2011, 05:06 PM
Latest Update:
-------- -------- -------- --------

Here are my final images! I could use a vacation right about now. Thank god ^^ its done!
Thank you everyone, best of luck and may all the insects out there be kind on your tender skin!

I really wanted to make something original, something people haven't seen before. A god that has history and something that makes you wonder. I pushed materials and functionality with this one as much as I could. The idea was to give the god scale and keep the balance of somewhat pure and impure within. The whole simple mask vs complex chest idea came from that. The insects are very fascinating things and very cool. It was probably the most far fetched thing for me to do considering my previous works. So of course I had to try it. It's been a very tough race but I am very glad I participated. I would like to thank all who supported me in it. So big thank you! o/

-------- -------- -------- --------

I have somewhat clear vision of what I would like to achieve with this one.

Uber fast 2D sketch (like to do them in 3D mainly) and some guidelines.'s a start!

04 April 2011, 10:34 PM

temp blocking it out.

04 April 2011, 10:48 PM
Done a bit more, just trying to get everything into place atm.

Feels like it's going to be nice silhouette, but I guess I will have to tighten up lowres so i can get everything in there properly.

04 April 2011, 01:49 AM
Haha I like the idea behind this! And damnit ... you speed it really up. I took already 2 days to play with my concept : /
I feel so far behind now ^^

04 April 2011, 01:40 PM

To be fair I have the vision of it all quite figured out already and I feel more at ease blocking it out as 3D quickly first, moving to more of fine tuning and adjusting in 2D later. It's some what different then the usual approach but I feel more comfortable with it atm. Ideally tho you would like to nail everything right away in concept stage though :) It's just that I do it a bit further on. So i would say you are still ahead? ^^

04 April 2011, 01:54 PM
You should trying pushing her eyes bigger. Most insects have huge eyes. It'd be neat to see just a bit of insect in her face. I dig the antennae you have going on here!

04 April 2011, 07:25 PM
Haven't had much time to work on it. Still a lot of stuff that is very temp and some things I will replace. But here is a bit more wips.

It's a bit tricky to make the eyes work behind the mask. But the mask itself is gonna be a lot different in the end :) Will make it work with the rest, allthough I do want it to stand out a little bit.

04 April 2011, 07:41 PM
Argh, that looks very cool! I'm really impressed by the cool ideas and models floating around in this contest :)
And I think you could just open her mask a bit in the final pose. Changing her "human" face wouldn't be logical imo because it's a disguise (I hope I'm not wrong xD) and it should match the human head.

04 April 2011, 08:39 PM
This is looking great!

04 April 2011, 09:01 PM
Thanks guys!

Some more wips, there is actually a thought behind it all! Believe it or not :)

04 April 2011, 09:54 PM
nice work with the mask explanation, i miss that detail too, but is ok, we doesnt have a concept to guess (your fault!).

Now seriously, really good concept, the idea of an huge insect lord trying to disguise like a human... original! and good poly flow.

Keep it up!

04 April 2011, 02:17 PM
nice idea :) I'll keep an eye on this

04 April 2011, 09:49 PM
Managed to squeeze a little bit 3D out today :)

Opened and closed chest, there will be a lot of bugs in there in the (hopefully) near future.

04 April 2011, 09:57 PM
really nice concept

04 April 2011, 04:50 AM
Great work mad-one, I like the concept and how it's coming along.

04 April 2011, 03:26 PM
Thanks alot guys!

This is my very first contest. I must say very enjoyable this far, I can't wait to show you the final model. Just have to get it out of my head and into 3D form :)

04 April 2011, 04:11 PM
I hope I am not swamping you guys with wips :) If so, do tell.

Some more.. wips!

04 April 2011, 05:18 PM

04 April 2011, 09:11 AM
Great progress so far, will keep an eye on this one :)

04 April 2011, 04:30 PM
dont worry about wips, are really enjoyable.

Clean and good work.!

EDIT: check the quantity of polys in those little things around the chest... is more dense than the others in the pauldrons.

04 April 2011, 05:19 PM

Aye I will look over those polys lather on, once I got everything in more or less before going on to the highres end of it all. Still quite a few things I need to get in there :)

04 April 2011, 08:43 AM
Did a few tweaks and worked a bit on lower part.

04 April 2011, 12:30 PM
Sweet, I dig the idea of the mask being a human face, pretty sweet.

04 April 2011, 12:48 PM
Great concept

04 April 2011, 04:47 PM

Rearanged the wings and the hard shell over them.

04 April 2011, 04:05 AM
This is an amazing concept and model! I can't wait to see the finished product :)

04 April 2011, 09:00 AM
This is the best one I've seen on this challenge yet. I am really looking forward to it's completion.... I'm going to have to step up my game....

04 April 2011, 08:01 PM
Thanks a lot for the support! :)

Very glad to hear you like where this is going.

More wips for you guys, hope you like them.

As you can see legs will be covered with wings/fabric in the end. Not sure if I will try to make them visible somehow.

04 April 2011, 05:33 PM
Phew did quite a lot of work on preparing the mesh. Soon time for sculpting.. can't wait!
Going to tweak the twisted soft shapes in the back of the head or they will kill my lowpoly model eventually :) and reducing polys on those will show instantly I recon. Also will rework the wings that hold the lower part into cocoon, gonna try to make it work with transparency and make the fabric behind a bit more interesting. Love the experimentation part, very exited.

04 April 2011, 03:05 AM
always love your design,i think if you dont smooth ,and just keep original wireframe, keep the feeling of straight line, maybe will make it better!!(just my thought)

04 April 2011, 05:57 PM
looking really nice man, really nice design. I love all the little appendages and the functionality of all the elements (wings folding in, the human mask over the insect face), very cool.
I was originally going to do an insect god myself, glad I didn't, your concept knocks mine out of the park.
Keep up the good work :)

04 April 2011, 08:32 PM
this guy is looking sweet, really enjoy the layering of his wings and armor, can't wait to see some high res...

Keep it up:cool:

04 April 2011, 11:32 PM
Very interresting design. Very unusual. I like it

04 April 2011, 02:09 PM
@Velkin: Thanks I hope I will manage to see this one trough all the way!

@GnarART: the weather out is just pure awesome and it's very hard to focus on this, but I am trying to poke highres a bit now (some wips for you) ^^

@nmcelmury: I am glad the functionality of it shows and appreciated. I hope you will like the final thing sins it's can be quite tricky to make it work all the way through especially in this case for me :) I really wanted to make something entirely different and push some ideas I had as much as possible.

@petrel: thanks for your feedback, yea I am going to make it somewhat more defined in highres and a bit less rounded so to speak. But overall I am going to aim for more round and organic shapes all the way through, to make it come together better as a whole. I am quite sure it will feel a lot better once everything will pop in place :)

04 April 2011, 07:59 PM

04 April 2011, 04:40 PM
Sculpting and sculpting some more.

04 April 2011, 01:42 AM
Interesting design and crazy sculpting!
The mask reminds me of a boss of Soul Reaver with a openable face..!

I loved that game, who reminds it? :)

Keep up with the sculpting!

04 April 2011, 10:09 PM
@stefanobernardi: Thanks! Haven't played that game though :)

Some more wips, getting there.. very hard to find time grr, but I am doing as much as I can.
Tweaked some stuff on the chest, added some details on the hard shell that protect wings.
Made a small hard shell at the back skull shaped, sins some bugs do have that and I find it very interresting.
Soon time to wrap this highres up! Hope you like ^^

05 May 2011, 10:35 PM
Hi guys!

Working on lowres atm, it's no picnic :) I knew that it was gonna be hard with so much organic shapes but damn.
While I am working on a serious update there I thought I show some shots of worked through highres, hope you like.

05 May 2011, 08:15 PM
I can't wait to develop the kind of experience that you possess, your character is looking pretty awesome!! :)

05 May 2011, 10:10 PM
@MissOptimist: Thank you very much, glad to be of help! :)

@pedrOadan: Appreciate it! ^^

@pixel-chick: Thank you. I hope you will like the final.. thing!

Hi guys!

Lowres is done. Still A LOT to do, but I wanted to show you some general guidelines of where I am taking this.

05 May 2011, 01:20 AM
Fantastic detail in this model, your work is great! These textures look good I'm eager to see how it looks once finished

05 May 2011, 08:26 PM
@Brebal: Thanks ^^

Hello hello everyone!

Doing some texturing, sorted out wings with functional alphas. Moving on to more definition of things. Hope you like.

LOVE those wings!

05 May 2011, 11:34 AM
Well, it's great. Only issue is thick border on it's wings? Is that intentional? Because I'm not sure if real life insects has such kind of thick borders on their wings. Right decision from artistic point of view though, makes form of wing more obvious.

05 May 2011, 02:43 PM
@pixel-chick: Thanks :)

@Velkin: Thanks for your comment on that. Yea I have been thinking same thing, was trying some different things last night with that actually, will see what I will end upp with. Also working on pattern on fabric and fine tuning textures. Juggling things back and forth a bit to get some distance. It can be quite blinding to look at same thing for too long.

05 May 2011, 05:36 PM
Snyggt Patrik! The texture is coming around nicely and the modell is looking great.

Are you planning to add some small swarms of flies or other insects that hover around your god? Just an idea if you got some polygons/UV space left to work with.

05 May 2011, 08:16 PM
I like the idea of the bugs too (if space is available). I recall something being said about them being inside the chest.

All I know is this thing really gives me the creeps. Well done.

05 May 2011, 10:20 PM
@seaberg: Tackar ^^ I do hope to have time to add some of that, was hoping to add several things of that nature.
A few flying bugs and hopefully some small hairs over the body that insects usually have plenty off.
But first I will have to fix all the main things that needs to be done. And there are plenty left still. Doing my best to manage finding time.

@TonyVirili: Appreciate it. Aye there are plenty of insects inside the chest and a few that are coming out. Will have some more on the pedestal hopefully. Was hoping to start with that tonight but I doubt I will manage. :)

Worked more on wings, solved fabric patterns, added more details and some general love.

Bugs on the pedestal sound great, but they seem very strict about what can be included with the pedestal. I'd make sure to get official word that you can have them as part of the pedestal polygons and UV's or keep them tied to the character. I'm not trying to be a pain. I realize they're only little bugs that shouldn't count for much, but I just don't want to see you get dinged on a technicality after all this work. Good luck!

05 May 2011, 05:21 PM
dude the materials are looking great. i think what u did with the colors and contrast in materials is what makes this so kickass

05 May 2011, 10:33 PM
@TonyVirili: Thank you for your input! Sent email asking will see what they say.

@truedeja: Thanks! Not much time left now, (even with the extension) but hopefully all will come together in the end.

All this talk about flying insects.. I had to do some experimentation :) Not going to make them stand out much, sins I don't want to drag away focus.

05 May 2011, 03:15 PM
Very cool character, especially the mask idea !

05 May 2011, 11:40 PM
@Spazmortis: Thanks for the warm words and thank you! Same for you.

@blackneko: Appersiate it. :)

@lepilo: Thank you.

Working a bit on podium now, will have some screens to show soon hopefully.

05 May 2011, 05:23 PM
:buttrock: , nice concept, insects are always interesting!!, im impressed with the texture work here mate, the details on winggs and the overall resolution turned out great!!, must be an awesome uvs work   , hey wich engine are u using for these images?. are u using color specular?..anyways is looking great , best of luck completing the entry :) :arteest:

05 May 2011, 04:30 AM
Sweet!! Simply awesome work, Im really impressed with this concept. Fantastic!

05 May 2011, 01:58 PM
@rattlesnake: Thank you. It's fun that you mention uv and overall texture resolution. I knew it was going to be a lot of surface to cover. But it turned out to be even more then expected. I very much wanted to push the functionality and fun aspects into this (such as opened chest and opened wings and shells). This does put a lot of pressure on uv.s and prioritisation. But I do love a challenge so ^^
Most of the time I let Marmoset stand for previewing.
I do use some color in specular map, mostly on hard shells covering the wings.

@Ferx: Bow, thank you kindly :)

A friend asked me about if I will show legs for it or not and how it was connected. I thought it might be fun for you guys to see as well. So here is a pic. It's not something that will actually be shown on final model ^^ but still.
Bigger Image (

Now for podium. Hm, I am not sure if this is within the limits of what is acceptable. So I thought I fire it out there and see what you guys think. Just a fast mocap. Doing some skining/texturing for now. Would love to hear your opinion. I still haven't got reply about the bugs question so I thought I show it here and hopefully get some clarity :)

05 May 2011, 03:58 PM
Small test. Closed chest, opened wings and tweaked podium some. Will be shells of bugs that form the flower beneath.

05 May 2011, 04:40 PM

hey probably u can add some glowing particles raising from the pedestal for the beauty shot :buttrock:

looking really sweet man! :wip:

05 May 2011, 08:46 PM
@GnarART: Thanks, pushing as much as I can. Long, long days for me this last few weeks and very short nights :)

@rattlesnake: Thank you. Sounds great :) Will try to add some glowing particles if I will manage to get the time for it.
Glad you like it so far.

That's a very good design. There is something totally creepy about his mask; I guess because it is simple and emotionless.

The 3D is shaping up great too. I love the materials, especially the red cloth.

Nice work!

05 May 2011, 08:19 AM
Fantastic work. great concept, modeling and texture.
