Rhino has Sweep2, maya has birail+ :)

Anyway, it is a better 'extrude'. I can show you what or how it is used:
(actually not me, and not only that)

I can say it is the best tutorial I've ever seen!

maya, has 3 birails.

with birail 1, you activate the tool 1st, then select your profile curve, then select your two rail curves, then hit enter, and whalllaaaa.

same with birail 2 and 3. activate tool, 1st select either 2 or 3 profile curves, then two rails, hit enter, and then (again) whalllaaa.

It's a strage thing, but I cannot use birail3+. Creation failes... :(
However the lines are connected, all of them, and doesn't want to create it. I used to make two birail2 instead.

Any idea why can it happen?

hey xyth,

in order for birail3 to work, all curves must be touching...

sometimes it might look like they touch, but they're not...

now, if you're snapping vertex points, it's
pretty easy to know when those points are

but, when you try to make the vertex point of one curve touch the other might "appear" to
be touching - but it might not be.

(this is the problem i had too)

when snapping a point to a curve, it's a little trickier.....

first, be sure the vertex is as close as possible
to the curve

then select the 'snap to curve' button.... then
you can MMB click and drag (the arrows of the move
tool) of the selected vertex back and forth and
the vertex should snap to the curve and slide up
and down the curve....

once the vertex is snapped to the curve, be sure NOT to move any points on that curve...

otherwise the vertex you just snapped won't be
touching the curve anymore...

after you select the birail3 tool, all
the profile curves(i believe you can have as
many profile curves as you want)...hit enter, then
select the 2 rail curves...that should be it!

hope that helps.

Hi crexnfx,

Thanks for the detailed description, I knew it already (anyway, repetition is the mother of all knowledge), but still...

It's a miracle why it doesn't work. I don't want to snap to vertex, because I want to keep down the vertexnumber (I don't have a power plant to work with, AMD 750@900).
But, but... I can make two birailed surface and attach them together, but I cannot make one tri-birailed (birail3+ :) surface.... How come??? Strange as a pinguin in sunglasses...

Thanks again,

that`s rigth, i canīt use the birail+3 tool too, the birail+1 and the birail+2 tools work propertly, but the birail+3 dont work. all lines are touching anyway, but nothing. i think to error is the instalation, i use the early acces version of maya 4, im try to use other.

hi theangel,

from the pics you provided, it looks like your two middle profile curves are touching profile curve(a) - see pic -hope you don't mind, i editted your pic :)

they should be touching rail curve (a) and rail curve (b)....

(is this the same problem you had xyth?)

hope that helps.

darn! sorry theangel the pic did not post....

i tried 'attach file'...but nothing!.....

am i doing something wrong?

06 June 2002, 12:55 PM

However I can't see the pic you've edited, I guess what you mean and I can say no, that wasn't my problem. (Unfortunately...?)

I have 3 profiles and 2 rails. 2 profiles are connected at the ends of 2 rails. The last profile is connected between the 2 previous profile to the 2 rails. CV numbers are equal for rails/profiles.

I'll try to show some pic if my mind will be so nice to keep this piece of info until tomorrow. :)

What a nice mo'nin'! (sh, 28 C degrees at 9:00!!!)

I've attached a ZIP file, contains one of the problematic curves. If you would be so kind to build a tri-birail surface :wip: or have a look at :insane: .
