View Full Version : Dominance War V - 2D - Baron Impossible - God of Hmmmm
03 March 2011, 07:42 PM
No idea what I'm going to do yet, so here are a load of thumbs to make it look like I do. Good luck everyone!
03 March 2011, 08:01 PM
i like the mood on second one. good luck.
03 March 2011, 10:23 PM
The first and second are great!
The top right thumbnail has a character with a pyramid head. I believe I reserved that move a week ago :P
03 March 2011, 11:14 PM
Very, very nice emotions in all of them.I especially liked the 1st and the tenth thumbnails. They have some kind of superior posture. If you want me to just point one of them, then just the 1st one.
Curious to see the progress of whichever you choose.
03 March 2011, 11:35 PM
My eyes are drawn to 8 and 10. I particularly like 10. Unique shape, lots of interesting angles and really nice contrasting darks and lights.
Looks like a pretty epic behemoth..I also like the rocky blobs. It looks like the surrounding landscape is just crumbling away in some sort of anti gravity wake/aura.
03 March 2011, 05:24 AM
Great to see you're joining Simon :)
As usual, even your sketches are outstnading. I particulary like the feeling of the 2nd one.
Keep'em coming mate!
03 March 2011, 05:38 AM
I most say that they all looks great I just can't point out which I like, but maybe 2,4 and 7 they are awesome. Keep it up fellow artist. :arteest:
03 March 2011, 11:12 AM
Hello everyone, great input - thanks. Sorry they aren't numbered, I put numbers on and then I must have overwritten the file or something because there are no numbers there now! Anyhow, I'll do a sketch or two later, focusing on Nos. 1, 10 and maybe 6, and think about how size can be portrayed such as in my Wyeth-like No. 2. And I'll have to come up with a theme, too. Difficult, when there are so many options, I'm used to being given a specific brief and this one is very open.
03 March 2011, 02:46 PM
Simon, awesome to see you joining!
I think #10 looks cool,...#2 looks like you spent more time on it,...I like #1 with unusual things happening, mysterious, looking very original!
Most have awesome action happening, good luck man!
03 March 2011, 04:51 PM
Thanks, jsn, good to see you here too!
Anyway, just doodling, I'll get some proper sketches done later. This one's the god of confinement, hence all the bondage gear (forgot his gimp mask, though)
03 March 2011, 05:08 PM
Nice lighting, I like it.
03 March 2011, 08:30 PM
Don't know who this guy is, god of asymmetry maybe...
03 March 2011, 08:44 PM
I like the 4 and 9 feel
Nice thumbs !
03 March 2011, 11:41 PM
I really like that God of Confinement, at first I thought the way he was holding the chain made him look like he was more about punishment, like he's going whip you with that thing lol, but now I see him more as a jailor-type. I like :D
03 March 2011, 01:46 AM
I really like the first thumb and the last image (God of Asymmetry), just love the head design. Glad you have joined up, look forward to more posts.
03 March 2011, 04:15 AM
Cool to see you in this challenge and really great thumbnails with nice composition and atmosphere. I like specially the second thumbnail for a "benefactor type" god (I think that the the blue tones that you used put a more paceful note in the concept ... :D).
The last 2 sketches are great too, like a lot the contrast and the backlighting on them. Perhaps the last one need a bit more "air" above, only a comment :)
The best of luck and waiting for more updates. Cheers my friend !!!
03 March 2011, 03:10 PM
wow - impressive colour thumbs! great sense for colour and composition. would be cool to see all of them in a more fleshed out version ;)
god of confinement looks great. i can imagine how he searches for bad souls and keep them burning forever deep inside him.
the asymatric god looks more like a monster for me...
03 March 2011, 03:33 PM
Cheers for all the feedback, guys, and good to see so many familiar faces! Good luck to you all
Here's another doodle, this time the god of devourment...
03 March 2011, 01:52 PM
Don't know who this guy is
03 March 2011, 07:07 PM
Going with the 'god of confinement' idea. Quick sketch first of the concept, then I'll think about the sketches later.
03 March 2011, 01:20 AM
Cool update. That god of devourment looks really scary, the mouth in a circular shape is a really great touch.
The design of the God of confinement works really well. I think that the tentacles can hel p on foreshortening and cool perspective on your concept. Perhaps one of the cages a bit more closer to the viewer.
Really awesome works and waiting for more! :D Cheers!!
03 March 2011, 02:42 PM
Ferx - thanks for the feedback. Yep, just a concept this so in the final image I'll be trying to get some different cage designs in there, and have one close up to show what it is. I'll probably give him another pair of arms too, with hands. Next is the character sheet, so I'll start work on that later.
03 March 2011, 04:45 PM
awesome thumbnailling approach as always, Baron.
I personally like the one with the saliva "god of devourment" and the lava-ish "god of confinement". Would love to see a birth child of the two. ^_-
Go baron go!
03 March 2011, 07:16 PM
Hi Simon! Ur first pack of sketches looks sooooo amazing! U have a whole army of gods already :D I also like the first god of confinement u did, with the key and a lock. His one eye is so sinister, no brain behind that look, but u can feel his infinite power.
The latest one with tentacles somehow lost his composure and looks a bit too random for me, if u don't mind saying that. But I love the idea of hanging cages and keys at the bottom. Keep up the great work, I can't wait for ur next update!
03 March 2011, 12:06 PM
Just great
03 March 2011, 03:36 PM
looking awesome man your style rocks! my favorite is the first big one with the lock on the chest
03 March 2011, 07:56 PM
Thanks guys, some really great feedback there  I've given the big guy a pair of arms to make him less blobby so we'll see how that works out. Hopefully I'll finish the first image for the character sheet tomorrow.
03 March 2011, 07:37 PM
God of confinement front view
03 March 2011, 12:06 AM
Really great design. Like a lot the "main esphere" on the hands , puts a total note of god feature in your concept, and the the chains and the bunch of keys is an awesome detail.:D Love the texture for the tentacles, cool.
Great work and looking forward for more updates. Cheers!!
03 March 2011, 01:49 AM
Really good work, loving the design and the rendering as well.
Are those chains hand drawn or you used a brush? I love how accurate the different perspectives are on them.
I do feel as though the monochromatic color pallet is a bit boring though.
03 March 2011, 10:55 AM
Wow, it is really a terrifying god. Congratulations.
03 March 2011, 11:03 AM
Ferx - thanks, glad you like it! Originally I had him carrying a jar of people but saw that NinjaA55N had that idea as well, so I changed it.
PavelSokov - Cheers. Yes, the chains are all hand drawn (although if I knew how to create a brush in Painter to do them I might be tempted!) The colour palette is only for the character sheet, the main image will be bouncing with colour (hopefully!)
davidramonilustracion - Thanks v much.
03 March 2011, 11:13 AM
Ah, damn it, this is a reminder to me to include the CGSoc logo, I always forget.
03 March 2011, 05:52 PM
I hate that we have to include the logo. It feels so forced. I have no idea were to include it.
03 March 2011, 11:29 PM
You don't have to include the logo - you can just use the team colors instead. (But if you wanted the logo, that ball in his lower left tentacle might work quite nicely for the round logo.)
Anyhow, it's coming along quite nicely. Love the design and the super-muscular tentacles. And the guys in cages. Any idea of what he's a god of yet? ;)
Nice work, and good luck with the rest!
03 March 2011, 11:58 PM
Amazing textures as always, reminds me an octopus head guard from PS3 "demon souls" great game.
03 March 2011, 09:40 AM
Amazing study. I really love the exploration on this one. Great work :)
03 March 2011, 10:39 AM
walrus - Cheers, Mike. I'll probably tweak the cages later, not sure how yet and maybe stick a faint logo on the central sphere. He's the God of Confinement, although I won't get the thread title altered yet until I'm sure I'm going with this one.
Gyorkland - Thanks! Haven't seen that game - sold my PS3 a long time ago :)
PaLantir - Thanks, glad you like it!
03 March 2011, 11:27 AM
Mmm. Great design. The rendering of the sphere and bottom right tentacle are so sexy already. Hope you run with this one.
03 March 2011, 12:13 PM
I really like the direction youre going in!
Maybe you thought of this already, but you could have people trapped in his stomach. It looks like its illuminated from within, and having some silhouettes of people trying to get out would be sick!
just a thought that you may have already had.
03 March 2011, 12:39 PM
Nethermind - sexy tentacles, mmm. Cheers!
danielstultz - Happy you like it. And yep, if you look verrrry closely you'll see little ghost faces in his belly, trapped souls screaming to get out. I'll tweak them so they're more obvious later.
03 March 2011, 03:43 PM
This is wicked Simon! Love the direction your taking him in, big fat floating disgusting is awesome in my book =). Will be watching here
04 April 2011, 02:11 PM
Cheers, Greg, fat is great isn't it :)
First, updated the front view. Didn't like the cages so made them all the same as locking spheres. We don't know what's in them but we can guess.
And the side view...
Not sure whether to do a rear view. I'd rather do some close-ups but I'll have to check the rules first.
04 April 2011, 03:56 PM
Oh wow ... this massive thing is scary!
Looks like a real "god" :)
04 April 2011, 06:05 PM
Thanks, Zykras, good to have feedback that he's godlike.
Here's a close-up himself with his visor up
Will probably revise the prison spheres again, so they open and tentacles emerge to snare enemies. So that's next, I guess.
04 April 2011, 06:51 PM
Cool updates, like your change to only spheres, puts a bit mysterious touch on the god. I think the start with the model sheet is a really good idea , to know in a beter way the shape and form of the character, and a great help when you make the final image.
Nice work and waiting for more updates.
04 April 2011, 02:50 AM
Interesting concept, Baron.
Where can i sign up to worship this Octoputocthulhulatica cult? secret handshakes? also, are we open to more than 3 wishes? i dont like cheapskate gods, sure everyone needs to get a turn, but a god this powerful should have the ability to timetravel, mass duplication, and alteration dimensional shifts- cmon, a million wishes aint nothing for him/her/entity, aye?
Pretty please? with cherry on top? XD
04 April 2011, 03:27 PM
Ferx - yeah, I find it's much better to start with the concept sheet first, to avoid those "ah sh**!" moments :)
PuiArt - He's related to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, so if you're already a Pastafarian and have been touched by his noodly appendage then you're half way there.
04 April 2011, 09:23 PM
Here's one of the prison spheres opening to snare an unfortunate warrior. I'll have to go back and change the front elevation image cos I realised the spheres as shown could never actually open.
04 April 2011, 07:29 AM
You're doing a great work! I can't wait to see the final image. It already looks like a winner.
04 April 2011, 08:18 AM
Tentacles always freaky and scary... Can't wait to see the final composition.
04 April 2011, 10:52 AM
Thanks, guys, glad you think it's looking good. I think I'll start on a back view later, even though I said I wouldn't do one. You can never have too many perspectives on a tentacled monstrosity god.
04 April 2011, 11:03 AM
Just love what you've got going at the moment. I love the sphere design... would just hate to be that warrior getting caught. I imagine he'd stay locked in there for eternity, going mad in the dark. Creepy.
Looking forward to more.
04 April 2011, 07:45 PM
Really great ideas. Like the cage style helmet :D Perhaps the unions when close are a bit in the symmetrical center and make a bit tangent with the eylids.
The prison sphere looks great, a really hell for any prisoner :D Cool work!
04 April 2011, 01:22 AM
Oh wow, that's some crazy stuff you got there! It gets better and better :)
Keep it up
04 April 2011, 08:50 AM
looks so nice that i go back and look at it again. Also the small details of functionality like the cages give it a great touch. Can't wait to see the final work.
04 April 2011, 10:31 AM
I really enjoy your progress so far and it looks good can't complain to anything. Looking forward to your final image.
04 April 2011, 11:08 AM
Thanks for the comments, guys, glad you're liking it :)
Just start on the back view so hopefully I'll post that later today
04 April 2011, 03:26 PM
So here's his arse. Not very interesting, just needs to be included as part of the character sheet I guess.
04 April 2011, 03:46 PM
EPIC WORK!!! Beautifully done mate.
04 April 2011, 04:38 PM
Forgot his chains...
04 April 2011, 04:59 PM
You are taking into account even the operating details, it's really a great idea .
04 April 2011, 05:58 PM
Thanks, David :)
OK so here's the final character sheet.
Big version here -
04 April 2011, 06:23 PM
This is awesome, what a complete package! We have colors, rendering, operations, good layout on the modeling sheet. Really solid concept, love the wide tentacles!
For some reason the Hunan face on that body is creepy in the discrepancy aspect of it.
The only thing I could say is that with his visor open, the bars look like teeth so I only like it closed.
This makes me want to step my game up!
Edit: I noticed that there is a discrepancy between the front and back view sillhouetes.
1. You forgot the balls.
2. His right side tentacle looks skinny up front, but a lot fatter in the back view. I recommend filling in the space on the front view between the skinny tentacle and the body.
Do you see what I'm talking about?
04 April 2011, 09:55 PM
your colors are awesome man, yor modelling sheets are always one of my favorties can´t wait to see the final image
04 April 2011, 01:07 AM
I like your concepts, if I had to choose it would be the god of asymmetry, so cool, but that's just my opinion.
04 April 2011, 01:21 AM
I withdraw my words, i didn't see the updates, sorry for my last comment. Amazing work.
04 April 2011, 10:59 AM
PavelSokov - Thanks for the feedback, appreciated! Yes, I noticed the tentacle thing too after I'd posted, so I'll revise that later. I also forgot a close-up of a bunch of keys, at it's maybe not obvious what they are when they're very small. I omitted the balls on purpose as they're not actually part of his body, hence I showed them on the front view and not the others.
Gyorkland - Thanks. Yep, I think I'll move on to the final image next, then come back after and revise the model sheet in case I think of anything else that needs doing.
KrizEvil - No probs, glad you like it, thanks
04 April 2011, 05:21 PM
Your character sheet looks amazing, really great detail over all the concept :buttrock:. Like that organic "propulsion system" to float and the huge size of the god. Nice work!. And now waiting for your first WIPs on your final image . Cheers!!
04 April 2011, 06:58 PM
Cheers, Ferx, haven't had time to think about the big image yet but hopefully later in the week...
04 April 2011, 01:25 PM
Rough sketch for the final
04 April 2011, 03:22 PM
Started to add some detail. I've decided to do the distance hazing at the end with a layer (urgh!) because otherwise it could easily go wrong, and he needs to appear super-massive for the pic to work.
04 April 2011, 03:27 PM
Oh man this will look epic once finished
04 April 2011, 03:47 PM
Love the right tentacle light !
04 April 2011, 09:15 PM
yigit - I hope so ;) Thanks!
lepilo - Yeah, subsurface scattering is great ;)
Haven't done much more but I'll post it anyway...
EDIT: Note to self - move logo from sphere to big tentacle
04 April 2011, 11:18 PM
wow, it becomes better and better. love your concept sheets and your rendering. tha flat tentacles are great!
just one thing that looks strange to me - his little helmet in contrast to the massive body. it seems that a tiny man is sitting in a huge costume :)
04 April 2011, 08:25 AM
very inspiring work process, wish you good mood :arteest:
04 April 2011, 05:11 PM
Really cool start for the final image, like the composition and mood on it, the developing details looks great.
Perhaps a tone not too red for the skin and tentacles, for a more distant atmospheric perspective over the god, only a silly comemnt, dont listen to me :D.
Great work and can't wait for the next update. Cheers!!
04 April 2011, 07:39 PM
You're making a wonderful final image.
04 April 2011, 09:07 PM
MFTituS - Yeah, he's a bit of a pinhead :) Thanks!
imperioli - Thanks, good luck to you too!
Ferx - Thanks, yep, doing the atmospheric distance effects at the end so I don't mess up
davidramonilustracion - Cheers, glad you like it
Well, today I only spent 45 mins on it, so here it is so far. Tomorrow I'll hopefully be able to get a bigger chunk done.
04 April 2011, 11:17 PM
Simon this looks freaking amazing man !! I loved the city in ruins beneath him
04 April 2011, 02:25 AM
Are those god rays in the back? loving the atmosphere so far!
I just hope this isnt happenin' close to my home town. :D
04 April 2011, 06:54 PM
yigit - Cool, glad you're liking it :) Thanks
PuiArt - Could well turn into godrays, that would certainly be approprate. Cheers!
Put in the chains this afternoon. I hate painting chains. They still need a little work but mostly they're done.
04 April 2011, 06:59 PM
I love how this is going.
But I am beggining to be concerned with the size of the head. Not because it is a bad idea for it to be so overly small.. it actually looks cool next to the oversized horns. But the problem is that with the tiny resolutions you are posting your images at, we can't make out the face behind the bars, and if we don't see it, it loses its cool.
Maybe try making it bigger?
04 April 2011, 05:10 PM
great work bro! its good to see you competing again. see you on the battlefield. your painting skills are something to seriously covet!
04 April 2011, 05:13 PM
It's a pleasure to watch the rise of this god.
04 April 2011, 06:42 PM
PavelSokov - Thanks! I would make his head bigger but I've found that the smaller the head, the bigger the creature looks, and I want this guy to look huh-uuuge. I think that in the final, which is 1000px (?), the head should be more visible.
MarcoNelor - Thanks, good of you to say so :)
ersinerturk - Thanks v much
I've done most of his body, except for his keys and a few balls. Later I'd add some characters in the foreground and get the landscape looking better. And I'll probably go over the whole thing after that and fine-tune it, then add the distance haze. Somehow (I'm not really a layers person but I'll give it a go)
04 April 2011, 08:12 PM
Wow...Really digging the way this is coming. The scale and the .. 'Godliness' :D
04 April 2011, 11:50 PM
Yea I'm an avid follower of this thread because you are really nailing down the scale and the epicness that is so central to the theme.
I am rather new at well... Being alive in general, let alone painting, and I am wondering what tricks you used to get the scale down? I am going to try to guess:
Smaller scale objects around the god.
A strong haze up too on the back tentacles.
Cropped out the rest of the horn and that tentacle in the top right corner. Does that make it scale or am I being a fool? I feel as though it's implying he's so big that the camera can't fit all of him.
The tiny head.
Anything else that you feel helped?
04 April 2011, 12:45 AM
good one! really look like a powerful god! it is great to see your progress, the design on the head part really inspire me! and i love your rendering style which i really want to learn this kind painting style!
cant wait to see the next step!
04 April 2011, 09:54 AM
redCigarette - Thanks, great you're liking it
PavelSokov - Yep, all the things you mention, plus another main one is perspective. I imagined a grid vanishing off towards the left-hand border and used that to roughly plan the god's perspective. Basically, the bigger something is the more it's affected by perspective, so if you miss it out it will either looks skewed, or small, or most likely both. Also, when it's finished I hope to use the god's shadow and the converging missiles to locate him in space (plus the final distance haze).
DerrickSong - Thanks very much. My style's pretty basic, really, just the Artists Oils brush in Painter, with a small round brush for fine detail, with a bit of Paper texture added to both.
04 April 2011, 12:13 PM
Damn, awesome concept and illustration is just sweet, really love it.:D
04 April 2011, 04:45 PM
Looking really godlike there baron, the intensity is really going on and the god of confinement is really showing itself. the painting style is unique and may i ask what software are you using to create such interesting textures ;) Goodluck and all the best!
04 April 2011, 04:56 PM
Haha, brilliant, I love your work! I am just in awe of your lighting skills.
04 April 2011, 06:41 PM
AlexaSharlOt - Thanks, that's cool :)
johnsonting - Cheers. Just using Painter for this one. Oils brush with custom texture.
NavigatorJones - Thanks v much!
04 April 2011, 07:02 PM
I have a question about painter? I have used painter X but couldn't find a way for the brushes to use pressure sensitivity for anything. I like it for opacity and size.
Is there any way to turn that on?
How do you add textures to the brushes?
Is that possible in photoshop as well?
Also have you thought of making the huge of the city different?
Maybe a dark orange overlay or something?
I feel as though the god is too similar to the environment in terms of hues right now. Maybe if you make the ground firey, you could give him cool orange rim lights under his stomach thing?
04 April 2011, 09:24 PM
Every time I am out of inspiration I just come to your thread, man that final composition is looking sick!and the colors makes me wanna paint something inmediatly!!
04 April 2011, 02:11 PM
PavelSokov - Pressure dependency is easy, just set the Expression to Pressure against the attribute. Textures is more tricky. You need to apply a Paper texture to your brush and set Grain in the brush config. On the face of it that's easy, but Painter is so riddled with bugs it's almost impossible to do this without trial and error. Some brushes won't take texture, some will but the Grain scale is messed up, and in Painter 11 the texture and brushes reset almost every time you navigate away from the window, meaning you either have to reload them (which often doesn't work) or save them as Looks, and even then it's a fight to get them to stay as you defined them. Just as well that when you actually get down to using the brushes they're excellent, because it's damned hard work to work around the constant bugs. And don't know about PS, never used it.
I'll probably beef up some of the colours later, but only very slightly as I want to retain the bleak, post-war look.
Gyorkland - Thanks, happy I can help spark your imagination :)
Minor update. Added some blokes running around. Just need to psyche myself up to do the keys now, I hate fiddly things like keys and chains, I much prefer monstery grey wrinkled tentacle flesh.
04 April 2011, 08:43 PM
Another small update. Getting there...
04 April 2011, 11:38 PM
I'm out of words :)
04 April 2011, 11:49 PM
Oh wow... the humans really make him pop with scale. Another fantastic piece! Outstanding work mate!
04 April 2011, 05:13 PM
Holy shit, I am so glad to see those humans! I love their muddy tones.
I don't know what the other forums are up to, but I smell a winner here.
04 April 2011, 06:38 PM
yigit, arokz, PavelSokov - Thanks v much :)
Minor update. Not much to do now, just going to go over it all and neaten it up and tweak bits.
04 April 2011, 09:34 AM
04 April 2011, 02:43 PM
The only thing I can think of right now, really minor, is that when my eye glances over the picture I sometimes get the feeling that I'm mistaking the main body orb as the atmosphere/haze/smoke behind the tentacles. Maybe it's because it's too similar a tone to the background atmosphere. I'm just not reading a spherical mass at first glance, rather air between the tentacles..if that makes sense.
I like the tonal difference between the orb and the atmosphere in the small patch of haze to the right of the propulsion puffs. To the left of that, near the lowest explosion, the tonal values are perhaps too similar between orb and atmosphere?
Just thinking out loud here, again awesome work.
04 April 2011, 05:59 PM
glupman - Thanks :)
Nethermind - Thanks for the comments. Well spotted about his belly, I've added some hue and saturation to hopefully make it clearer.
04 April 2011, 06:16 PM
Remove that logo from tentacle I think that that one one ball is very clearly seen, because my eyes go directly to that bright red logo on tentacle. Very nice progress by the way !
04 April 2011, 07:03 PM
Really cool , like a lot the action and mood in the image, awesome. Agree with Alexa´s comment, maybe the big logo grabs a lot of attention. Waiting for more updates. Cheers!! :D
04 April 2011, 07:26 PM
AlexaSharlOt - yep, that logo's too bright, I toned it down a couple of notches
Ferx - thanks, glad you like it!
04 April 2011, 11:13 PM
This has really developed into a brilliant painting I especially like the open ball with the small tentacles coming out of it grabbing things, all in all a well though out and well executed painting
04 April 2011, 04:32 PM
Phoenix-06 - cool, thanks for the comments :)
Revised the character sheet. Decided not to include the keys to avoid clutter.
04 April 2011, 05:07 PM
I love it man!
The battlefield you painted on the bottom is brilliant? Did you try throwing an overlay layer with a color like orange onto the ground to see if it will make the god pop out more? I'm just curious what happens if we get rid of the monochromatic flow of the picture.
I also DEMAND you make one of those tentacles from the ball grab a human. Don't even **** with me, I need to see it happen.
Anyways, you are a boss, and I congratulate you on your entry. I would remove the logo from the tentacle completely though.
Also you back and fron view are still not matching in sillhouette.
04 April 2011, 01:26 AM
I think this is a completed piece :) Seems that the only thing that is throwing some of us off is the placement of the logo. Ill give my opinion but please ignore it if I make no sense... but I would select the logo in photoshop (center logo under his face) and once selected I would put invisible that layer... then with the selection in action i would copy merged and paste so it can take the texture of the steel and drop a shadow on in so it can looked carved in the steel... and if it looks too generic then tweak it to satisfaction. Again, I dont know if this made sense but basically give it an effect so that the logo can look more naturally carved into the piece. Not just put there because you had to put it somewhere... I actually like the logo on the arm.. .looks a bit more natural.. I think you can work it more in there so it can look a bit more natural still. Like add the texture of the skin in some area over the logo so it wont look flat. Maybe two logos on this piece is too much... I would stick to one. Anyways I am too excited to write but SUPER GREAT PIECE MATE!!! Best of luck to you :)

PavelSokov - Cheers! I've added a bit of colour to the landscape but I want to retain the post-apocalyptic look, so that's why it's pretty bleak. I'm afraid the tentacle grabbing will need to remain confined to the character sheet, but don't worry, he's about to be grabbed in the next three seconds... 3...2...1.... !!!
arokz - Thanks v much! You know, I actually did that and embeded the logo into the metal but for whatever reason it didn't work out. Maybe because it's so small, but it ended up looking lopsided and lost its glow. Probably says more about my ability than the idea, though.
Anyway, here's my workflow sheet. I might add just a little bit more haze to the main image later but broadly speaking I'm done...
04 April 2011, 07:18 PM
And here's the main final
04 April 2011, 07:28 PM
Amazing! You've done a great job! Though I agree with the others that you don't need the logo on the arm. Anyway, it is great!
04 April 2011, 08:07 PM
Baron, you are one click away from perfection.
That click is making the arm logo layer invisible. Please click off that layer. That is all you need to do to be perfect!
Anyways, you are the best on cg society! Congratulations, it was a pleasure to follow your great thread.
You execution of the WIP sheet is fantastic as well. I wish I could do graphic design like that.
04 April 2011, 08:29 PM
Fantastic work as always  I followed this thread from the beginning, and it has been very inspirational. (Though I didn't participate myself this time :))
04 April 2011, 09:18 PM
ersinerturk - Cheers! Argh, the logo... :)
PavelSokov - OK, guys, I get the message. You don't like the logo. I'll get rid of it, then. Unfortunately I don't use layers but all the same it shouldn't take long.
MartinNielsen - Thanks very much. There's still time to join, I think there's at least a month left.
04 April 2011, 03:11 AM
Fantastic work as always Baron. Big fan of your work and it's great to be able to follow your progress like this. I love the warm colours, it gives such a great impression of the heat those poor humans are facing on the ground. You've already mentioned adding some haze and I think that would be a good idea just to push that middle lower tentacle back a tad. Regardless of what you decide, congratulations.
04 April 2011, 10:02 AM
04 April 2011, 11:05 AM
madbot - Thanks, glad you like it. I've added a bit of haze now.
davidramonilustracion - Thanks v much
Final preview, although I might tweak the final image colours and tones just slightly before submitting.
04 April 2011, 12:40 PM

Like I said before, you killed it, love it.
It has everything, the scale, the godliness, the rendering, the design, even the modeling and wip sheets have great graphic design on them!
I have no idea why everyone's modeling and wip sheets are so beautifull, mine looks really amateurish. Do you have any graphic design tips for me?
And yea, get ready to win, I haven't been checking the other forums but this is the best I have seen. It is even crazier that you finished first. First and best usualy doesn't happen, so you are an enigma.
04 April 2011, 07:33 PM
PavelSokov - Cheers, I appreciate your comments.
About the worksheets, to be honest I am hopeless at design so I keep it simple. I try not to squash it all in whilst at the same time not leaving too much space between elements, and make sure it's clear what everything's meant to be. I think the most important things is for worksheets to be immediately readable, so I wouldn't worry if yours look plain because the judges will be looking at the characters and won't be interested in fancy borders and hi-tech backgrounds. At least, I hope not.
With any luck I'll place, at least, but we'll see. Normally there's a huge amount of good stuff submitted for these competitions so I'll be happy just to be mentioned in the final results, and at a push get higher than 9th which I got last time.
04 April 2011, 03:46 AM
Nice layout for the entire process, I'm not sure if I'm a huge fan of the actual design but, it's painted extremely well!
I don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not, but the spherical containment/capture forms on the lower left seem to flatten out, I think it could use a little more rendering to give it more of a sphere shape. The way you segmented the one on the right looks odd in perspective as well, this one reads as a sphere on the left half, but given the way it's opened the right half almost has a tapered football like shape instead of appearing as the other half. One final nitpick since you have the time for such things, is the missile trail from the one heading under the god's left arm ends directly on one of the round tentacle shapes and looks like it's part of of the tentacle.
Anyways, it's a great painting regardless... Good luck!
04 April 2011, 09:37 PM
Sketches are nice and the idea is unique.
I love the color tone, keep going.
my DW5 work
04 April 2011, 09:54 AM
DeathMetalDan - Cheers! I might add a bit more tone to the left-most two spheres before I submit, to make the shadows a little clearer. The missile trail too, I'll add a couple of extra dabs so that it doesn't look attached. I don't see the sphere problem on the right so I'll leave that. Thanks for the comments!
opsite - Thanks, glad you like it.
04 April 2011, 01:24 AM
Incredible. IMO this is one of the very best. This would make for an epic sculpt... it would be really fun to sculpt those fat tentacles and organic masses. BTW Love the your colors too! Good luck!
04 April 2011, 04:47 PM
hey man, sorry for a bit late reply :) Just stopped by to say what an awesome job u did! At the beginning I imagined it in a more dark and hellish environment, but what u did here is even more original. Good luck :)
04 April 2011, 07:44 PM
KCassidy - Thanks, happy you like it!
NinjaA55N - No such thing as late :) Thanks very much for the compliment.
04 April 2011, 02:18 AM
The best part about this piece is how the little soldiers are trying to destroy this god and that seems to be impossible!, Baron Impossible! Good representation, color scheme good, nice overlay, Details are fantastic, and the God of Confinement idea is unique. Good Luck and always a pleasure looking at your work, take care for now.
04 April 2011, 10:57 AM
Yeah great job indeed. Every time I see those model sheets I just want to load up zbrush. :)
04 April 2011, 07:24 PM
I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed viewing your thread-Really excellent work- great imagination and execution- also wonderful sense of atmosphere and depth
Best of luck in the finals!
04 April 2011, 12:28 PM
ShogunWarrior - Thanks for the comments, good luck to you too!
Nethermind - Cheers. Never used Zbrush but I hear it's pretty good for creature sculpting.
PaulAbrams - Thanks v much, you too.
05 May 2011, 01:19 PM
Terrific work, Simon! Congrats on both a great entry and being done so much earlier than the rest of us (while not skimping on any of the detail or quality.) Lovely concept and rendering.
The only teensy crit I can think to offer is that the orb being held in his 2 hands (the one with the CGS logo) blends into the torso plate where it's not cupped by his hands because of the similar values and textures. A little more hilight on it or some more shadowing or ambient occlusion on his chest should make it read a little more clearly. But if that's all I can think of to comment on... :D Anyhow, nice job!
05 May 2011, 02:12 PM
Hi Mike, thanks for popping round and commenting. Great to hear you like it! I always seem to finish with loads of time to go, maybe it's an inbuilt safety mechanism so I've got time to re-do it if it doesn't turn out as I'd hoped :) Thanks for pointing out about the orb values, I'll give that a tickle with the oils brush before I submit. Thanks again, and good luck!
05 May 2011, 02:30 PM
Congrats mate! Sorry I am a little bit late but just wanted to stop by and wish you the best of luck. Your painting process was amazing and fast. Very professional and clean. The detail of the foreground really set the scale nicely. The character has really nice flow and his texture work is great. I really feel how massive parts of his body would be if i was to weight him in real life. Well actually I wouldn't be able to.. i would prob get hurt trying to do that, lol. Anyways, overall thank you for sharing your skills with us all by participating in this challenge. Really hope to see you around here as I am sure more challenges will be headed our way in the future here at CG Society.
Best of luck mate,
05 May 2011, 03:00 PM
arokz - thanks very much, very pleased you like it. It was definitely my intention to make him appear huge and heavy so it's good to hear that seems to have succeeded. Good luck to you too! :)
05 May 2011, 08:41 PM

Great work as always. I remember what a big inspiration you're work was to me last DW. I was just getting started out as a artist (late start 27 years old :). I was on this team and you're creation process and openness to critiques was great to observe and I learned a lot.
Anyways, I wish you the best, this entry deserves it!
05 May 2011, 09:46 AM
DanielCortes - Thanks v much :) It's good to know my postings have been of some help, and to see you're making great progress as your excellent portfolio shows. Like me you started late (but not quite as late as me!) so it shows it can be done :) Good luck!

good luck my friend~!

Hey, Simon, congrats on finishing!
I hope you don't mind, I incorporated your god into my god's painting (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l260/mdashow/Dominance%20War%20V/sketch47-colors.jpg). It's a low res image, but you can kinda see your god on the stairway, right underneath the "280" on the 'Now Serving' sign. (I didn't want to post the image here so as to not distract from your thread.) It's intended as an homage because I like your piece so much and figured you'd appreciate the nod. Best of luck to you in the final judging!
