View Full Version : Dominance War V - 3D - Stahlberg - Goddess of Blood
03 March 2011, 08:29 PM
a goddess that likes causing pain.
She wouldn't be so bad except she went insane 351,000 years ago when her husband the god of love left her, and accidentally took a nice chunk of her mind with him. Now the council of gods try to control her, so she doesn't destroy the universe, but sometimes she manages to sneak a few humans into her lab.

Wow! Definitely will be follow this post Mr Stahlberg! =)
03 March 2011, 11:40 PM
glad to see you enjoy to join the Domination war. Maybe we get a tip from a legend.
03 March 2011, 11:45 PM
Stahlberg is here! This thread could be very interesting :)
Btw, it looks like she got an itch or something...
03 March 2011, 03:29 AM
very good concept
03 March 2011, 04:52 AM
Wow, it's so good to see that you've joined Dominance War V.
03 March 2011, 10:10 AM
Hi Sir Stahlberg!Nice to see you entering the contest.I will definitely follow your thread.
03 March 2011, 05:06 PM
Refined the sketch a little.
03 March 2011, 05:09 PM
Refined some more.
03 March 2011, 07:16 PM
lol you and your crazy women!! I like the concept so far! One thing though, for me it doesn't have enough "goddess" elements to her. To me she looks more like a angel of blood instead of a goddess. Just my 2 cents :buttrock:
03 March 2011, 11:20 PM
Yes, I know, I'm working on it. :)
Here's an update. Those are supposed to be fingers around her neck.
03 March 2011, 11:52 PM
I'll vote for you if you make those meat wings.
03 March 2011, 11:58 PM
dude, maybe it's too much? i mean so many blood and meat, you remember the rules -
"Keep gore and nudity to a decent level please! Don't get DW banned in various countries!"
03 March 2011, 12:07 AM
Haha, forgot about that part. Well I can always do 2 versions, one for me and one for DW. I've had to do that before
03 March 2011, 07:01 AM
cool man, i think this is pretty unique feeling. i think this gothic/horror more realistic approach could be really awesome. I really dig the hand floating. maybe incorporate more stuff like that? im not sure. but there may be more places in the design to add pazazz.
nice start man
03 March 2011, 03:40 PM
I Love it :) good concept...
my dominance War V page (http://gameart.ir/showthread.php?t=275&page=2)
03 March 2011, 06:16 PM
Some more changes. A little less gore, a little more god stuff.
03 March 2011, 02:04 PM
Nice to see you throwing down this year! How are you going to incorporate the logo? The already sort of look like the border of the logo.
03 March 2011, 02:27 PM
Awesome! I like how she lost her mind and now a good part of her head is missing. It looks like someone took a big bite. Great concept!
I'd love to see her in one of those horror fest movies.
03 March 2011, 04:01 PM
Thanks! I put the logo as a tattoo on the victim. Also a few other changes. I don't feel the need to rush into modeling, I want to get this right first. I think I'm almost there.... maybe.....
03 March 2011, 08:54 PM
That is so good. I cant wait to see it in 3d! Well done.
03 March 2011, 09:18 PM
yes, this version I like much more  and again about rules, rules about pedestal :
"No additional characters, pets, animals, pieces of characters, dead characters, etc, can be put on your pedestal. Bones and skulls are fine." unfortunately:banghead:
03 March 2011, 11:51 PM
Ok then, again with the 2 versions, one for me like this, and one for DW where a skull floats in the bathtub (and nothing else). :)
Thanks for letting me know, I should read the rules more closely.
Who thinks her apron should be made from human skin? And who likes the plain green material? :)
03 March 2011, 03:28 AM
ooo Human skin of course!
03 March 2011, 04:32 AM
This is going to be so cool!!
03 March 2011, 10:15 PM
ok testing human skin, and removed the "parts of another character".
also putting a glowing glyph in the blood to add a more interesting light source
03 March 2011, 11:01 PM
This looks pretty dark :) no one would want to mess with this god
03 March 2011, 12:03 AM
hey man lovin the concept! nice touch on the glyph.
03 March 2011, 04:23 AM
Really amazing concept, hope t see more update.
04 April 2011, 05:01 AM
A bigger version, with some minor changes
04 April 2011, 07:07 AM
hey master!this is getting better and better ...looking forward for new updates!!
04 April 2011, 12:02 PM
ohh dear god, that's incredible, cant wait to see it bro
04 April 2011, 12:28 PM
I really like this concept, it's true that she doesn't look very massive/godlike, but I think that's not always needed. Sometimes it's just the pose and expression that makes a character feel mighty without the need to make him very big with fancy stuff around his body.
04 April 2011, 05:03 AM
Thanks! Here again some minor changes. One side of the bathtub now slopes, she is hovering, wing is bigger, arm is higher, background is touched up, apron hangs differently catching more light, last boot is gone, spike on arm added, etc
04 April 2011, 02:56 PM
looking great sir, I´m thinking something could be added on her leg, spike-wise, not sure, it may take away that woman like silhuete and become more like a monster.
04 April 2011, 12:20 PM
yeah the glowing glyph gives it something special - good change!
like the cutted design of her but her apron - if she would be a butcher , ok, but she is a goddess :) a better solution for her costume would pay off.
04 April 2011, 01:41 PM
I love the concept and the glyph really does work better than the leg sticking out.
Could I recommend one thing? Her forearm is cut in the middle completely off, could I suggest maybe having her bone show through instead of having her lower forearm/hand just floating? Just makes me wonder why that arm is cut and the rest of her appendages are intact
Maybe just something to think about. Other than that this is a great concept keep going!
04 April 2011, 03:11 AM
Good points all, I've tried to address them at least partially. Here's another version.
The apron is supposed to be made of human skin, it's hard to tell so I tried to make some more human parts hanging off it, like a hand, and a couple faces in there...
04 April 2011, 12:07 AM
I redid the wings. They are supposed to be slowly rotating pieces of iron ore with sharp edges, like gigantic scissors, I'll try to add some more later.
I keep changing her because she just doesn't look epic enough. I started this concept trying to make her look totally human, just like a weird insane character from some slasher horror movie. But the limitations of the rules made it impossible to make the concept scary enough, so it fell flat. Now the only way forward is to make her look more "god-like", like what everybody else is going for.
04 April 2011, 01:38 AM
are you doing a 2D entry or a 3D one ?
i been waiting to see your 3d progress..
04 April 2011, 04:33 PM
I'm not going to go to 3D at all unless I feel something special for the project, right now it's a bit "meh" for me, on the fence so to speak. If I can't make this concept pop for me, I'll just drop out. No big deal, I have no illusions or grand plans of winning or anything like that, just wanted to try this contest once. But having said that, I think that possibly I'll start on the 3D next week.
04 April 2011, 08:16 PM
Dont rush, im enjoying a lot your artwork here in concept, in the last image looks promissing to be an exellent work, those hard lines gives a lot of character to the goddess.
Good work, checking for more!
04 April 2011, 08:55 PM
Ok hopefully this is my last 2D update, though I give no promises.
04 April 2011, 01:44 AM
Ok here's the 3D work started
04 April 2011, 01:07 AM
04 April 2011, 03:07 AM
This is a really great concept. I like the design you decided on.
04 April 2011, 12:52 PM
Hey Steven, looking good. Sorry my comments are so late, you have prolly moved
ahead with your current concept, so my ramblings are irrelevent.
The things I liked were the head extensions, they gave her a regal quality,
and were very gothic, I think you could see if you can make them work.
The wings are working, though if they went down her back, and the metal
fused with the flesh, or grew out like scales to form the blades... (the giants causeway)
comes to mind. I think the wings could be more weaponlike, or more articulate.
The cracked nature could feature more all over to give it more texture, maybe in the facial features, or where the apron touches flesh.
Glad to see your entry, you show these young un's how its done mate.
04 April 2011, 01:04 AM
Thanks for the input, as you see I've added the head extension back in :)
04 April 2011, 01:38 AM
Positioning of low res, roughing out the lighting
Total about 8000 triangles
Now time for sculpting
04 April 2011, 02:12 AM
For your last 2d update, I didn't like the missing head spikes, it left the head missing a lot. Seemed rather boring.
The update before had great spikes going on!
Also I suggest you sneak the cg society logo onto the wing thing as a red symbol instead of on the bathtub.
04 April 2011, 09:53 AM
i do miss the head spikes also..looking forward for updates!
04 April 2011, 01:42 AM
are you going to execute this in that fixed pose ?
looks like you are approaching this as an illustration rather than a functioning realtime game character.
04 April 2011, 02:06 PM
She's just posed for final render, she still has her bind pose. I could paint the normal sculpt first in the bind pose, then go back and adjust the sculpt for her final pose. Or I could skip a step and start sculpting directly in the final pose. That would make it more likely I can finish on time. It's not like this will ever be a real game character. But if it's against the rules to sculpt in the final rendering pose without first sculpting in the bind pose then I'll start off by sculpting in the bind pose first.
04 April 2011, 04:27 AM
The cracked nature could feature more all over to give it more texture, maybe in the facial features, or where the apron touches flesh...
My oppinion also.
04 April 2011, 09:18 PM
My oppinion also.
My opinion of his opinion of my opinion ... also :)
I think the elements are there, we just need to see more of them.
More fragmentation of the Blades, like iron filings on magnets, more spikes from the skull,
like maybe arteries and veins, or fractured skull, definatly more cracks, to give her that freaky
broken doll's face feeling. And definatly some mudbox or zbrush love.
I would pay to see you sculpt some awesomness on this. Truely.
04 April 2011, 05:30 PM
Sounds good, thanks. The sculpting is going really slowly, but I will have a screenshot update later today.
04 April 2011, 11:15 PM
Here's the screenshot. Sorry it's taking so long but I'm going really detailed... I also have problems with Zbrush, being new to it. I would prefer to use Mudbox but there are a couple brushes I just like the feeling slightly better in Zbrush and after all using a favorite brush is what 99% of modeling is all about. :)
04 April 2011, 12:03 AM
Looking real nice so far
04 April 2011, 01:12 AM
That knee looks real!
I'm following with interest this thread and i like your illustration approach to the composition and character pose.
Thanks for sharing!
04 April 2011, 02:17 AM
i know i bugged you about the fixed pose thing before but i wanted to re-iterate the issue since i can see you are sculpting the highpoly in that fixed pose.
as far as i know, part of the technical challenge of dominance war is to create a realtime character that would work in a video game. i know that no one is actually putting their character in a real game but the point is to make something that would work in a game.
if you are executing the character in a fixed pose then it would not work as a dynamic character in a video game. it would be like a statue.
the way you are doing it seems a bit redundant since the 3d part is static. it would be better to just do it as a 2d entry and skip the 3d altogether since all you see at the end is a 2d image and lets not forget, your 2d painting would beat most people's 3d any day.
04 April 2011, 01:34 PM
This particular pose is impossible to do with a game character in a game today. You could do it if you were allowed to use morf targets and animated normal maps, but that's very expensive and you can only use that in certain circumstances.
If I tried to do this by sculpting in the neutral pose then weighting a skeleton, perhaps even adding some extra bones that would normally not be there, the anatomy would look really really bad in this pose. To me, anyway. And I refuse to work hard on an image that looks bad to me and then display it in public.
I could have picked a different pose but this is the one I picked and this is the one I want to do.
So ok, I'll see it as a sculpting and modeling challenge. To me this is relevant to what I do every day, it's good practice. It will still beat a 2d image because I can rotate it and take snapshots from several angles, and alter the lighting etc. So I'm ok if it disqualifies me, it takes the pressure off because I don't have to worry about the deadline. :)
04 April 2011, 01:42 AM
Here's a new update. Still sculpting details. Next is the face and back. I've done the wings and bathtub etc already.
04 April 2011, 11:58 PM
The sculpting is done, now started texturing
(right-click > 'View Image' to see full size)
04 April 2011, 06:20 AM
Hello man!! very good sculpt, I really like the wrinkles on the cloth, and of course the human attached to it looks great so far it has that classic sculpture feeling :applause:
04 April 2011, 01:14 PM
Dunno why it makes me drool (I know, I know , I am a sick and twisted person :buttrock: ).
But seriously, the whole thing is coming out great.
05 May 2011, 12:06 AM
Great concept and sculpting.
05 May 2011, 10:22 PM
Nearly done with texturing. Lots of fiddly polish work left.
05 May 2011, 05:41 AM
hi there, wow, good luck! :buttrock: looking forward to see the final piece
05 May 2011, 11:08 PM
Update. Not done yet.
05 May 2011, 02:19 PM
Lovely work Steven.
I seriously doubt that deriving a standard realtime cage from this sculpt would be that difficult. I think the difficult part is coming up with the initial design in the first place.
05 May 2011, 09:10 AM
Cool stuff! Loving the pose. I would suggest adding another segment on her right knee, especially since the light hits it, as it does. I am guessing you are still going to add blood on the area chest/stomach and the blade that comes through it? Would be nice to see contrast in the blood stains and the fabric itself. Good luck!

05 May 2011, 01:03 AM
Ok I guess it's getting close to finished. But I'll probably continue to tinker with it. I forgot to add the CGTalk logo, will do that tomorrow
edit: just saw the latest post, thanks I'll consider your points
05 May 2011, 07:50 AM
wow what a beautiful composition you have going here! Love the originality in this piece congrats
05 May 2011, 02:17 PM
Looks great and would be a fearsome end of level boss, but maybe you can add the glow from the logo in the bath to her knee, and some lighting effects to her, maybey in the cracks or inside the skull. She needs a little something more.
05 May 2011, 01:44 AM
Thanks for the comments. I also find the character needs something more, but I can't think of what right now.
Some more renders. I suppose it's pretty much done, won't be able to work on it over the weekend and the deadline is Monday, so I guess that's it. Just about time for some wireframes and texture swatches on Monday.
05 May 2011, 06:11 PM
Last image is my fave... Was wondering if I could have a play with your mesh once the Comp is over.
Good luck and all.
06 June 2011, 05:34 AM
I absolutely love this. Amazing job. i sifted and searched for a while to find some of my favs this time around and you definitely got up there if not the top. although i haven't looked through them all yet, but again i love this.
