Well, I fell in love with that gremlin at first sight so I thought why not create a short story of him...... so here I am.


The story:

One day this little gremlin god was sent to earth for a mission (wipe out human race basically XD). He was completely ignored by people at first place because of his size. But after some sort of awakening activated by a "mysterious material" (spinach!! maybe...... :D ), our little god transformed into a tremendous monster and now it's time for payback!


I'm not sure if I can successfully compress all these cuts in 20 seconds, anyway the tempo will still be pretty fast even it's not a completed sotry I guess. Hopefully I can come up with a feasible animatics in the next few weeks......

Just checked the topology of the gremlin dude, it's an excellent model but it's made by triangles. I'm using Maya and the rule says it's not allow to alter the model so I guess I'll probably have to use another character and think of another story...... :hmm:

I had the same thought when I checked this guys topology out. We're allowed to add edge loops around deformable areas, so maybe we're allowed to remove tris. I'm using this guy as well and I'm removing the unnecessary tris as well as adding loops. I hate looking at all those triangles :)

I don't think it's really breaking the rules unless you change the shape of the base mesh... at least I hope it's not breaking any :)

I decided to use another character for the contest because of the topology issue of the gremlin model. The final choice of mine is the dragon-ish guy provided by yung. I've spent quite a few time on rigging it during the last two weeks. Since I am not a skillful Maya rigger I wouldn't say the process was totally fun...... buy still I enjoyed it a lot and did learn many things from this rigging experience.

Here is a screenshot of the rig I've been working on:

I guess I'll have to work on a whole new story for this character during the next few days, looks like he should have a very different personality from the gremlin dude...... :wip:

The idea of the story came out right before i was going to sleep. Better write it down just in case i can't remember a thing after waking up...... XD

"At the begining this dragon-ish god is chained to a rock column in a dark cave. Beside the colum is a small pond. Senses the unusual movement generated by the energy beneath the pond, the god wakes up from hibernation. The awakening brings back some of his power which enables him to break all the chains and locks. After regaining his freedom the god walks into the center of the pond, put his hands into the liquid for obtaining more power. Suddenlly two wings spread out from his back. He flips his wings and take off, crashes the top of the cave then flies away for his revenge against whoever imprisoned him......"

This should be enough for 20 sec I guess.

Just finished drawing the storyboad. Actually it is the first time I've ever drawn a storyboard with graphics tablet. It was so much fun! :cool: ( ( ( ( (

1st animatics uploaded, i've changed some shots from storyboard, will keep polishing the fluency between shots.

also discovered some skinning weight of the rig needs to be fixed while creating this animatics. Hopefully i can find solutions for tweaking the skin before starting animatics V2......

Very cool! I love seeing the god fly up through the ground. The split-screen shot that wipes to the right is pretty awesome. Can't wait to see more animation on this one!

Thanks for the commend jchristo! I didn't intent to do a wipe at all then i found out a wipe to the left might help improving the fluency so there it is and i'm glad it works...... XD

Hsiang just one question, is the Dragon looking through a "floor window" at frame 250?
What is he looking at?

Animatic looks good. I like the arcs of the flying motion very much.

theANMATOR2B: Thanks for mentioning that issue, my initial thought was to have the god gathering energy in that force field so he can regain his power to fly.

Apparently it's not clear enough and I am still trying to figure out a way to clarify this intention. All I can think of so far is to use some geometry to represent the energy transfer between the floor and the character's body. Since we are not allowed to use any sort of transparency this will definitely be a tough thing to deal with (use solid mesh to act like illusory force). Any better idea or suggestion guys?

Hsiang you could represent the energy transfer by making the character look weaker as he walks to the area where he will recharge. Maybe add in a stumble or lean against the wall as he makes his way to the recharge area.

Then make the character look like he is getting energized by his posture changing from slumped over to strong and upright.
In addition you could add in some geometry to show the energy transfer but if you can show it in the characters performance that would be nice.

If you decide to use geometry to show the energy transfer Kiel Figgins has a very cool animation with a geometry based explosion.

I know it's not the same thing, but it might give you an idea how to show the energy transfer with geometry.

theANMATOR2B: Thank you so much for the advise! I'll definitely try to design some more obvious poses to tell the story. And the reference website you provided is just amazing! Really efficient and appealing way to use solid mesh for effects. Thanks a lot! :thumbsup:

I'm digging the reveal and demonic pool, those can be some really cool elements.

Dunno about the split screen, not really reading and might be more impactful if you only show the hand clenching up and really snapping those chains.

Don't be afraid of some mid shots from a lower angle to help with intimacy and show scale. You don't always need the full character in frame.

Excited to see more, good luck wrapping it up!

Jet Packs / Shoulder Mounted Lasers:

None of these would be intended to be rendered, but are enough to give the VFX guys staging and timing, and can typically be adjusted by hand faster then re simmed.

KielFiggins: Thanks very much! I really like these excellent references you provided. They visualized the effects so well with only simple polygon shapes... :thumbsup: I will be more than happy to try this kind of approch if i can finish the animation in time!

Just spent a day and did some very basic dynamics test in my animation to help telling the story.

The energy pool was made by Maya nCloth + some force field, it's a little bit complex to edit this effect by key frame so I guess I'll just leave it that way.

I used rigid body + shattered effect for the cracked ceiling, the timing is not perfect so I'll probably bake the animation and edit those keyframes in the next few days.

Added some teeth to the character so it won't be totally flat and empty inside the mouth when he growls...... :twisted:

The first animation comp with sound & music, there are still many things and animation details I would like to add or change, especially the last three shots.
Just hope I will finish most of them in time!! :wip:

Here is the final submitted version, there's still plenty of room for improvement but I think I'll just stop here and call it a wrap...... and get some beer :D (
