View Full Version : Dominance War V - 2D - God of Giant Venomous Fish

03 March 2011, 02:57 PM

This year around I've the ambition to actually finish the DW comp. After browsing around a bit on the web for inspiration I've come up with an idea inspired by the works of artist Alex Grey. As I need to add some humor to it all, my plan is to add fish as a major ingredient as fish strike me as inherently funny creatures :)

I'll continue updating this thread with imagery as I progress.

Good luck everyone!

Best Regards,

I did some doodling to try out a couple of shapes and values that I'd might like in the final composition. Short of ideas, I thought that I'd do the process backwards and start off with the final render, as it may help me define ideas for the theme.

Awesome concept, and this fish idea sounds really funny actually lol And I like the fact that you want to put a humorus touch to it, I want to see where this is going!!!

Everything he said! It looks really good and the topic idea is hilarious. The composition is nice. I just can't figure out where the poisonous fish went there. Probably it escaped the photographer's shot. Can't wait to see another update. Keep up the great work!

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the comments!

Major art dump ahead as I've been trying to flesh out the idea a bit more. It's getting a bit psychedelic and fluid, so maybe I am on the right track. Done for tonight, though. Now on to some headbashing in Dawn of War II :)

Love that last image. The flow and the idea of the venomous is refreshing!

Thanks all!
It's a bit chaotic and I like it that way, as I've said I wanted to maintain a style reminding of the works of Alex Grey. Added detail and some clarity, but there are still some things which needs defining which is my aim to complete until next update.

The god is turning into a goddess, so I'll start sketching her this week as well.

oh my god, this is awesome!!
You're working so fast it's making me cry, but I can't wait to see more :applause:

Jesus ****ing Christ that is beautiful!
I love the color choices and the flowy shapes.
It reminds me of Android Jones work except instead of patterns you use real objects placed very thoughtfully!

I love the jelly fish as well!

A bit discouraging though for most people I'm sure because it shatters any hope of winning or doing well for artists like me.

salki: Thanks, dude!

Digiegg: Thanks! I've still not decided at all what she'll be like, but she'll probably have really thin skin with muscles and veins showing or maybe keeping parts of her transparent. I don't know :)

Lappisch: Thanks! The process goes much faster when making stuff up as I go along. It's just a matter of keeping everything as interesting as possible, as feasible as possible within the current context and to be able to render it within the pictorial frame.

PavelSokov: Thank you very much! You shouldn't feel like that, though. Most of the stuff in the image is in my comfort zone and as I've started with the final image and the restrictions that specific work process/method imposes, that does not let me experiment much with ideas as if I had started with sketches. I bet you could make something superb with the right mindset. Remember we're all here to learn and have fun :)

Yea I am usually a win type of guy, but looks like in this I will have to settle with learning and having fun haha!

But I did notice that you went into the final image right away which is fine, but I feel as though with that background you are going to have a tough time making the God herself matter. And if the god doesn't matter as compared to the background, that is ultimately a bad deal because we are voting on character design, and it's hard to argue that the fish are an integral part of HER design.

But im sure you will find a way to make her as interesting as the background or more.

Good stuff.. love the colors you are using. Best of luck :)

Really interesting and original idea. Cool painting with a nice atmosphere on it, like a lot the fishes and the bacground design :) Good luck and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

Very interesting approach to getting the idea out. Love the color palette. keep at it solblomma!

Thanks for all support and encouragement, people!
Still following on the Alex Grey path, I've decided to make the goddess semi-translucent which I think could make for interesting light effects and a smooth visual transition between the jellyfish in the final image and her.

The idea of having her be the Goddess of Giant Venomous Fish seems a bit distant at the moment as I am obviously starting to design a more esoteric character type.

Latest update! Time for bed!

This is looking awesome! I would probably echo what others have said about losing the god herself, that said you haven't really started her yet so its a bit early to say.

03 March 2011, 07:07 PM
Wow! Just wow!
Love the colors and the chaotic atmosphere!
The goddess is turning out great too!
Can't wait to see more!

This has come along quickly! Really, well done!

The images works so well already that I wonder if you need to put a girl in there at all. One of the fish could be the goddess. it might be hard to add an element to something that already working. Nobody said that the god's/goddesses needed to be human, and I dont think anybody is going that direction. Just an idea, I think this thing is rad already!
