God of Nullity.

Thank you all for your help!

“...As The Screams Of A Thousand Suns Cried Out, Someone Heard Their Call, And From Their Suffering and Death, A Child Was Born...”

My god isXrilias, the God of Nullity. He is everywhere but no where, a mere bad thought in your mind,a tear on your cheek.Nullity is the absence of all matter, and the God’s main goal. He will not stopuntil every molecule has been perished, including his own. That is his ultimatevision of peace. But he is not destined to succeed because he cannot destroyhimself. He comes to the bitter realization of his eternal loneliness afterwiping out every other molecule in existence. The pain won’t ever stop, asXrilias is filled with regret. Maybe he has the power to bring everything back,to restart the universe? Maybe this isn’t the first time this has happened…

Maybe no legs? Just kind of a hanging torso sort of thing, like an upside down version of his head spikes, the whole thing held up by the wings. You could make him the god of gravity if you put a recessed pool there and had it flow [B]up[\B] to his mouth.

03 March 2011, 11:28 PM
That dudes head just screams scary, a black hole in his face is rather creepy looking but I think maybe his head is a little large in comparison to the rest of him. Maybe keep the hole the same size but decrease the heads size by maybe 50% maybe 30%.

03 March 2011, 03:15 AM
the helm like this??

03 March 2011, 04:40 AM
I really really like this character concept.

God of Nothingness
God of the Void

That would be awesome :)
Kind of like Exdeath

03 March 2011, 03:13 PM
Killer Flea

Thanks so much for the suggestion! I might go with no legs, I am really considering it!

Thanks, I am really glad you find the head scary. I will try to make it smaller and see if I like it. Its on a seperate layer so it would be real easy.

I think my head is a lot different then that!

I am really feeling your names! You got them from the emptiness of his head right? It's like a black hole in space kind of.

Whats exdeath btw?

Now lets consider the following choices:

1. God of Emptiness
2. God of Destitution (synonim for above)
3. God of Nullity (the state of being nothing)
4. God of the Void
5. God of Power

I would really pick God of Emptiness, but it sounds awkward so I am really leaning towards God of Nullity.
I want this god to make people feel empty, and pointless. Suddenly people don't notice them anymore. Their mother doesn't recognize them. They can feel themselves slowly..dissapearing?
And nobody knew they ever existed.

Scary, no?

03 March 2011, 10:30 PM
Nullity. Very cool name. I'm glad I could help.

Exdeath is the antagonist from FFV and wishes everything to "return to the void". Here's an except from

Exdeath's ultimate goal is to gain complete control over the infinite power of the Void, a sentient force that lives solely to consume all in its path. He proclaims that he wishes for control of all dimensions, which would cower over the power of the Void, but in the end, Exdeath himself is consumed by his power and turned into a nihilistic demon. In the final battle, he says that once he uses the power of the Void to erase everything, he will go on to erase himself, so that nothing will exist.

I don't know if you'll want anything like that for your character but the drawings you did reminded me of him.

03 March 2011, 03:21 AM
Awesome concept! My idea for the topic would be God of Dying (as it would devour souls of dying ones) or God of Nullity as you incline to. I would keep the waist belt in the design and as my personal suggestion for the legs - make each muscle a head/soul just like the one or similar to in the belt/waist on your second concept. Good luck!

03 March 2011, 06:43 AM
Why is my thread title not updating in the Dominance War forum view?

That character sounds badass, but I really don't understand what is going on with the concept art for him. Very unclear. But I admire his ambitions! To destroy every piece of matter and then to destroy himself. Badass!

Thank you for the suggestion, I will try it out and see if I like it. Got a lot to think about.

I feel strange that I am the only person that skipped the sketching stage. I mean I am satisfied with the top half of my God, do I still have to sketch other ideas if I got it right on the first try?

I worked a bit more on my modeling sheet today. The graphic design of my page is really bad. Do we get evaluated on such things as the quality of graphic design on our modeling sheet? If so I will come up with something better.

03 March 2011, 10:18 AM
Those sketches keep looking better and better!

I doubt you get evaluated on the modeling sheet. It is just a requirement for wip I bet. If you go for the 2D then most likely the composition, colour variety, silhouette, pose and indication of some emotion (like what feeling you want to carry over to the viewer) will most likely apply to the final picture.

Can't help it but in my personal opinion it might be better to move the logo elsewhere or implement it in a different way as at the moment it looks like a badge or a badly placed tattoo.
Keep up the good work!

03 March 2011, 11:00 AM
the helm like this??

DUDE that's exactly what I was thinking! He's got the same 'vibe' as good ol' Pyramid Head. I think its the way the head is tilted down towards the chest, and looks heavy and 'uncomfortable'. I am loving that head design! I agree that maybe just a torso and head would look good.

03 March 2011, 06:20 AM
Am I stuck with my placeholder of a thread title? I want it to show "God of Nullity"

Hey thanks for the comment!
I don't really want the logo there either but I am not willing to use the black, red and white colour pallete so I must implement the logo somewhere. I could not come up with anything but the chest. Which is kind of dumb because Gods don't have tattoo parlors.

Thank you! I am really glad he has a creepy vibe like pyramid head. That is a really interesting creature. I am proud to say though that when drawing my character I forgot all about him until you guys reminded me.

Here is an update. Legs finished, new abs, and new scales on the arms. Let me know what you think!

03 March 2011, 02:16 PM
I like that anatomy, and the helmet gear, but it looks a bit too much like a warrior rather than a god. Perhaps when you put him in an environment that won't be a problem.

03 March 2011, 05:25 PM
That looks soo cool. Its design looks aggressive. Probably God of Nullity might not longer be a suitable name though unless you would for example enlarge the black hole (aka mouth) about three to four times. As a suggestion God of Evil, God of Hell or God of Daemons would sound more suitable should you keep the cool aggressive alien/mutant like design. Good job!

03 March 2011, 10:42 PM
I have been looking at the forum and have noticed something:
Sometimes people's gods don't look like gods but more like minions.
Other people's work has a sense of epicness that lends itself well to the idea of gods.

Am I losing this sense?

I need to regain that feeling to have any sort of success. I wad thinking doing something with the environment that shows epicness. Like him smashing a planet (I reserve this idea, march 23d, 2011), or maybe mountains flying around him or giant serpents flying about him like in the cg society logo?

But then I lose the name "nullity" and "emptiness".

I'm in a tough spot it seems. Does anybody have an idea of what to do? I am thinking of changing the name after I decide something epic to introduce like the planet smashing to "god of power" or "cosmic god"?

Maybe scrap the entire concept and start from 0?

03 March 2011, 11:25 PM
Funnily enough I also share the impression that my concept is still somewhat missing something thus I keep developing it to see where it goes in the end. So far I have seen oversize and levitation being the main factors but let me know should you figure something else that makes god the God with scaled up G :p

I wouldn't scrap the entire concept as I like the design but possibly posing your character and adding some asymmetry could do the work. Use Photoshop, Painter or something to make a new layer and paint over it with some gray or colouful strokes to get your desired look'n'feel to it. And also since you are doing 2d maybe grab some color palette? A couple websites for that

Good luck!

03 March 2011, 11:53 PM
If you really have a great idea and you need to run with it, all the better but if you are having reservations about the drawing and you really feel the need to explore other ideas, now is the time to do it.

Also as a rule of thumb, character concept turnaround sheets tend to flatten the emotional impact of said characters. Maybe you could start by doing some rough pose work with this character in different situations/environments just to get a feel of how his body type might work to convey that epic-ness you feel is missing. Perhaps it's just a matter of proportion adjustments.

If you still aren't happy with it just go crazy with thumbnail sketches/color tests. Don't be afraid to explore other ideas but keep it rough and loose, and not too tight until you are really happy with something.

03 March 2011, 10:22 AM
:o starting over?! I hope you at least keep that amazing head design!

03 March 2011, 08:06 PM
Thanks so much for the advice guys! You are all very helpfull andI'm happy to see people paying attention to my thread.

Based on your recomendations I decided to make a thumbnail with the anvironment to see if my design can be epic afterall.

I have no idea if I'm happy with them or not. Can you guys tell me what you think?

03 March 2011, 08:23 PM
The blue-ish looks like it suits the "out there in space" style kind of better. Probably if he had his claws/fingers buried within the planet and the head closer to it that could work? For reference have a look at babies holding a milk bottle or just google "baby holding bottle" that could give you the idea for the pose.

03 March 2011, 11:38 PM
I like the eating-planet idea, and agree he should have his hand on/in it!

03 March 2011, 05:42 PM
(**** I forgot the wings like an idiot!! And the moon too!)

I have looked up the babies and thought about it.

I am not sure what you guys mean because any time I try to envision the composition the planet is just a little basketball in his hands, which isnt very dramatic.

If I keep the planet the same size, then I would have to have like half the character out of the frame?

Maybe you guys can illustrate what you meant?

03 March 2011, 09:40 PM
Here are some wings, does that help?

First some gold wings:

Second some blue energy wings:

Third some space darkness wings. The wings would contain stars in them, but I haven't download a star brush yet, just imagine it for now!:

03 March 2011, 11:49 PM
That idea is pretty cool. Don't be afraid to get some more dynamic poses for the body in there though. Make him hungry for it.

I did a really quick rough paint over on just the body of what I mean, I hope you don't mind, I just like your idea. ;)

(The white ball he's hugging is supposed to be the debri/vortex/black hole thingy..just black didn't show off the silhouette of his arms and fingers very well how i did it.)[/URL]

03 March 2011, 02:56 PM
As Nethermind says, try to incorporate more dynamic elements. Although, doing it too dynamic may mess with the scale of the character.

03 March 2011, 03:40 PM

Thank you so much for the paintover!

The reason why I didn't go for that pose is because it gives him a kind of creepy "Cat"-like sneaky vibe. Do you know what I mean? Also I am not sure about the vortex in his hands because that means there are two spherical shapes in the composition and I don't know if thats good!

I have a few ideas like him sucking in a fleet of spaceships through a black hole instead. I just remembered that black holes are basically the absence of matter as there is a gravitational pull so strong that the laws of physics theoretically break down and matters dissapears. So if he was pulling something into a black hole to the absence of matter that would serve his name Nullity really well.

What about the wings? Did they not make the piece dynamic enough? Which of the 3 wings is best?

03 March 2011, 08:17 PM
Yep wings are cool, I was just referring to the body pose.

03 March 2011, 09:32 PM
Hey Pavel,

You have a solid concept and nice designs for sure. Maybe the god destroying / absorving / sending to the emptiness a mountain or a forest., that give you more dramatic atmospheric and enviroment options ( for example big rocks or trees ripped from the ground to the mouth of the god, a stormy clouds vortex, etc. ) Only a comment :)

Cool work so far and waiting for more updates. Cheers!!

03 March 2011, 09:58 PM
Don't worry, I am still thinking about new poses! I can still try that one out as I'm on my thumbnail stage.

Thanks man! I am really glad you think I have a solid design. I have been told on another forum that placing him in a earthly environment will make him look more epic then just floating in space.

However I was really interested in trying out the black hole idea, where the god pulls a fleet of space ships through the whole into his dimention of emptiness. I will try that now and then see from there!

I am still torn on the wings! I have most people saying the wings are good, but two people said they are bad.
On top of that, I am not sure which wings to even keep!

I just put stars on the dark wings. This means his wings are black hole portals of some sort. Cool or no? My gf likes the gold wings the most. What about you?

03 March 2011, 01:07 AM
Oh shit I just made the black portal and spaceship idea and also I added some space to the background. Now I made a million different versions and confused myself like I always do. Please help me make sense of this and pick one.

1. The version I posted above with earth and space wings.

03 March 2011, 02:29 AM
I like version 7 the best. Maybe add in some people and debri. Per say make some varied sizes and other versions of ships in the same style and make the closest close-up of one of the humans of about the size of the turbine/motor in the bottom right corner.

03 March 2011, 07:23 PM
Awesome concept! Im definitely for a version #2. Later sketches with flying space ships look too sci-fi for me. But those early ones where ur god is devouring our little planet, is just sick good. And the idea of black wings surrounding us, which maybe reflects a whole another galaxy in them, shows just how powerful ur god really is. Cant wait for the next step, really looking forward to see whats coming next :)

03 March 2011, 09:20 AM

I like the most the god with planet version. Anyway your image is going great.

03 March 2011, 10:01 PM
Hey guys, thanks so much for the great feedback, I am honored by it! And the help you provide is amazing as well.

So it seems like the spaceships are a bad idea compared to the earth, so I will continue on with the earth. Oh well, I was just trying things out.

I hope to get an image update in tonight so come back and check it out

03 March 2011, 05:18 AM
Sorry I couldn't get much done today. I just finished the side view lines.

I will do the back ones within a few days, and then try to lay down some grey values under the line-work.

03 March 2011, 11:10 AM
Nice progress, I like the design of his skin / armour in your sketch. Personally I'd be tempted to make his head-gear even more outrageous, being that he's a god.

03 March 2011, 11:57 AM
I think your idea is pretty awesome!
I especially like the helmet and crazy mouth, you could totally push that and make it really intense with rows of teeth or something.

Anyway, I think it's really coming along. good luck!

04 April 2011, 04:27 PM
Thanks so much for the support and the great ideas!

I love the rows of teeth idea, I think I'm going to snatch that from you.

How would you make the head more outragous? I am really open to seeing your suggestions, because if its cool I wouldnt hesistate to implement it.

04 April 2011, 08:57 AM
About the head, what about something growing out from the skull?, like horns for example.
Anyway your god is going very good. Go ahead.

04 April 2011, 05:23 PM
Nice updates. Maybe for a more outrageous head and the rows of teeth, you can try some references, like shark skulls and dinosaurs skulls, only an idea :)

04 April 2011, 10:43 PM
wow, this god's really coming along, I love your sketching style--it's very cool. This god looks creeeeepy.

04 April 2011, 09:36 PM
Hey guys, sorry for the slow updates, I have been busy doing another competition over at

So I finished the b/w lines.
I will be painting the color values ( they will be same as my thumbnail I think) over the lines next.

In terms of making the head more outrageous, am I allowed to do that in my final image only, or does the modeling sheet have to be 100% representative of the final painting? I don't feel like the modeling sheet is a good area for exploring head ideas, I would rather do it on the final image.

I am really struggling with the graphic design of the modeling sheet. I am really no good at it, and it all looks pretty lame. Not to mention that the logo I used for some reason has Dominance War 4 and not 5... sigh. Can somebody offer me tips and tricks on how to make the modeling sheet look presentable, graphic design-wise?

04 April 2011, 02:29 AM
Those are some godly six pack that he is having, let me know where I can sign up for some of those.

The guy looks super pissed, and that he spits black-holes during lunch. O_O

04 April 2011, 07:06 PM
Haha the idea of spitting black holes is badass!

So here are the front colors finished. Any thoughts on how thats looking?

04 April 2011, 07:42 AM
I like the colors, I think they suit your god.

04 April 2011, 09:32 PM

I hope the constant updates aren't a problem!

Here is the finished back:

I added some inner glue to the blue parts of the character to make it seem like he has energy for blood. I then developed a new face opening to match that:

Here is another face hole, black with blue rims:

Which face type is better?

04 April 2011, 10:07 PM
First one is more interesting and getting our focus more towards the head but the second is more suited to "nullity" i think.
But considering a strong visual is always a plus, i'd go with the first one.

04 April 2011, 12:40 AM
i prefer the first one, great progress you have here, the final modeling sheet turn out very nice. If you can make your god design in asymmetry it will be better!

04 April 2011, 05:03 PM
I like the first one too. Funnily enough, I couldn't picture how he'd look coloured, so I'm very interested to see how this all turns out :D

04 April 2011, 11:32 AM
Thanks guys, I will definitely use the first one!

So I started thinking about assymetry, and trying to make the god more "epic" and whatnot. I sketched these strange shoulder things. What do you think? I am also planning to try out a new type of wing that will be shaped like the cg society logo.

I also changed the shape of the head on the side view:

04 April 2011, 01:05 PM
Really enjoy your concept he looks very cool and I like your color choose very interesting. Keep it up !

04 April 2011, 02:55 AM
Thanks! What about the shoulder things?
Are there any other "epic" looking things I could use to make the design more impactful?

04 April 2011, 04:55 AM
Allright so my modeling sheet is almost done. I just have to paint the wings on the front and side view, and that is it.

Also, I'm not about the blue background gradient I added, what do you guys think?

Side view colored:

Full modeling sheet without wings:

04 April 2011, 01:54 PM
I most say about modeling sheet, that is not important is it in colors or not, it can be just gray colors. But concept looks amazing very bad-ass, keep it coming. :)

04 April 2011, 06:07 PM
Nice character work, hangs together pretty well. Personally I wouldn't use such saturated colour for the background as it overshadows the purple bits on his body. Nice job so far.

04 April 2011, 10:45 PM
Allright I am done the modeling sheet!

It is subject to change however, as I want to try introducing more epic elements.

Full sheet:

04 April 2011, 09:39 PM
Hey sorry for being persistent with my updates, but here is the important part. I started to repaint my thumbnail to give it the same punch Venger's OP had.

First here is the normal version:

Here is the version with a darker soft lights layer:

Here is the same one with open hands:

Here it is with a lighter soft lights layer:

So I need to decide whether I want to use the open hands or the closed hands, and which "soft lights" or no top layer to use! Please let me know

04 April 2011, 02:51 AM
I think maybe the blue surrounding the god could probably be a little more desaturated at the ends (ie further away from the god), so that the saturated colours stay close to the god. I love the open hands option because to me it shows more movement. Looking forward to more.

04 April 2011, 02:06 PM
I also vote for the open hands option.

04 April 2011, 05:05 PM
So open hand it is!

Which lighting condition do you guys prefer?

Also how can I integrate the cg society logo in a non lame way?

04 April 2011, 07:39 PM
So I went back to the modeling sheet because I wanted to try out some ideas for a new mouth.

Let me know which is better, including the original mouth.

New Mouth 1:

New Mouth 2:

Character Sheet with mouth 1:

04 April 2011, 04:54 AM
I like the New Mouth 1 better, looks more evil :D

04 April 2011, 05:17 AM
I like mouth 1 better too :D It looks better in profile as well, I think.

04 April 2011, 08:12 AM
What a huge one! I like the head design. I'd love him more if you use more pale colours. Keep it up, good luck!

04 April 2011, 04:44 PM
Sweet, thanks so much for staying loyal to my thread and always helping me make choices!
For me the hardest thing is to evaluate what I did without bias. For example when I create different mouth options, it's difficult to tell if it's good.

So you guys like mouth 1 it seems.
I had a friend tell me that the old circle mouth is better because it's more strange and doesn't read like a mouth which makes it more unnerving.
Do you agree with him?

04 April 2011, 08:50 PM
I hear you about decisions and opinions.I really loved your linearts and character sheets.
I suggest, since mouth part is just a small detail, don't spend too much time on it, since you can alter it even on last day within a couple of minutes.
Instead, try to concentrate on the main illustration since it'll be the most important factor for the juries on deciding and to get attention of the viewers. And about the illustration, what about your god splitting the planet in two ? I'm saying it since the image is still on rough phase so it'll be easier to change it.It may give it a more dynamic feel.
You may say "hey yigit why dont you alter your own image?" well, you know suggesting ideas is much easier than actually doing them :)

04 April 2011, 04:19 AM
Actualy I might attempt the planet split, thats a great idea!

I am leaving to Russia for a week, will be back the 30th. Maybe I will have internet in Russia but I'm not sure.

So I blew up my thumbnail to 44 inches width by 53 inches height, 300 pixels per inch. This came out apprixmately to 13,000 by 16,000 pixels . It is really hard to work on it because my computer can't take the heat at all. I have 2 gb ram, will getting 2 GB more help?

Here is the little work I have done so far. Someone mentioned that lowering the saturation on the wings that are far away from him will help, and I did that. Also started rendering the chest.

04 April 2011, 04:42 AM
The image is looking nice. Like the less saturated color for the wings.

Agree with Yigit comment, and waiting for more updates.

04 April 2011, 06:21 AM

Wait, did you say 13,000 by 16,000??? The official rules state the finals piece can be no bigger than 1,200 pixels wide and 1,000 pixels high and no larger than 350KB. Your piece must be infinitely bigger. Since your computer is having problems at that size (and I daresay it makes rendering a colossal bitch) why not scale the piece down to a smaller size?

Have fun in Russia!

04 April 2011, 05:25 PM
Ferx, thanks man!

Dread Reaper,
Well the giant resolution is my painting resolution. I work in that size because I know that 44 inches is the largest width any printer can print me a poster of.
So I make it that big just in case.

Then I will shrink it down to 1000 pixels and no doubt lose tons of detail, but that's life.
I sell posters of my works on my Facebook art page and there is also an arts festival that I am part of coming up in Montreal this summer. Who knows what I want to print for it, so I just want to keep my options open!

04 April 2011, 09:41 PM
Don't start from Zero! I think your concept is cool and the latest model drawing (front) is great. I think the essence of that God-ness is in the pose and the scene. I would try and give him a really dynamic pose - a little foreshortening, some real energy drawn from an interesting angle and he'd look like a total bad*ss. As far as conveying nullity, you could perhaps play with the idea of having him slightly transparent in the heart - just not in the brain, then you really would have to rename him ... Just a thought.

05 May 2011, 03:24 AM
I'm not starting from 0! why did you think that haha?

I really like your transparent idea!

Here is an update on the face and an arm:
Click for bigger:

05 May 2011, 03:02 PM
The transparent wings look quite cool. I have to agree with Budley though about the pose. Your rendering is superb and I'm getting a feel of his size but the pose seems so... static. If you feel up to it I would like to see just a few quick thumbnail sketches of different poses just to see if you like them. You're putting a lot of time and effort and skill into this piece but I don't feel your framework is working for you.

05 May 2011, 04:08 PM
Hello Pavel.
I see you working hard, about the pose maybe it is a bit static, but I suppose that a so huge sized god has not the need of quick movements and he can simply take it easy.
Great work anyway.

05 May 2011, 05:17 PM
Oh wow, why didn't anybody mention the pose was boring earlier haha?
Its ok, I haven't rendered much yet.

I'm a little confused, did you mean you were going to draw a couple of poses or you wanted me to draw them?

While I should obviously try some out myself, I am not very good at posing, and would appreciate beyond belief any pose suggestions.

If any of you would be so kind as to take the latest version of the image I am posting and try to play with it to create a better pose, I would be extremely indebted.

Head detail. Not finished anything, but its got some polished areas here and there:

05 May 2011, 01:17 AM
Why don't you try bending the arms at least at the elbows some? They are both completely straight right now which is not helping in the dynamic department. If your still having issues with the pose in a few days I'll try a paint over if you want. Some of your 2-d competitors would do a better job with a paint over though;) BTW the head on your god is badass.

05 May 2011, 12:32 PM
Is it possible for you to do a paintover now?
I want to collect everything I can get ASAP because the deadline is soon and I am not even close to done

05 May 2011, 08:29 PM
Damn man you really called me out lol, nice job.:) It's a super quickie done over a break from real life. Hopefully it gives you some ideas. Peace bro

05 May 2011, 01:48 AM
Thanks so much Kassidy, I like the middle pose!
I will try that one out, if you dont mind! I should probably find my own, but if I fail, I will give yours a go.

I just don't get what you are doing with the legs. They look like overly large dinosaur type legs. And I feel like you might of drew a tail. Can you clarify?

05 May 2011, 05:00 AM
So I was too scared to work on the pose for today.
Instead I decided to render the planet.

I tried out the suggestion of having the planet splitting. I think it looks great on its own merit, but it does take a lot of attention away, no?

Which one is better? In the splitting one, is the angle dramatic enough? I was thinking of taking one of the halves and bringing it upwards or downwards to stress the seperation.

Are there more pose suggestions?

How is this pose?

Is the new head shape better or should I adjust the top of it back to pointing straight up?

And which size earth is better?

05 May 2011, 06:10 PM
this one is better.and i think the first earth size is better too

05 May 2011, 10:40 PM
Thanks so much Yigit! So first earth size and new pose it is!

Thank you for making it easy to choose haha.
Can you also comment on the head shape? (the top of the head got slicked back as compared to my previous updates)

Here is the fully rendered head:

So today I worked REAL hard on it.
And I don't think anybody could tell me that I'm not trying hard enough, because I just broke photoshop trying to save the image. Thats right, my picture is so large and detailed that photoshop doesn't even know what to do with it!

I merged all the layers I could, finishing with 26 layers and it saved.

Here is the first update.

Then I went on to work on the wings. But I'm not too sure about how they are turning out. Thoughts?

05 May 2011, 05:12 AM
This keeps looking better and better! Probably you have been told by other people that the character could have benefited from maybe a more curved action line. Not sure if its still doable for you or not but put the wings behind him going into the space than giving him an "angelic embrace" with them as the body doesn't support those bend-in curve of the wings and vice-versa. Definitely go for the energy style in 2nd picture for both the beam and the wings however. Good luck with the competition!

Hey! Sorry for not stopping by for such a long time, and thank you for all the support in my thread. I see its coming along nicely, I especially love the colors. Im not sure about the bright blue wings though... It is not scary enough for the damage your god is doing. Have you thought about black wings to close the image and after destroying the planet, he covers it in endless darkness. Maybe another space inside those wings, like a wormhole or something, where you can see nebulas from another dimension? Just a though while looking at this already strong piece, so dont mind me ;) Good luck!

05 May 2011, 03:36 PM

Thanks so much! Do you mind illustrating your wing idea so I can invision it better? I am up to change the wings, they haven't really been rendered too much.

Yea I am a little worried about the wings looking happy now... Why did nobody stiop me earlier haha?

As for your darkness wings idea... Well great minds think alike (or you checked in to the second page of my thread, stole the idea and forgot :P ) because the darkness wings were 1 of 3 types of wings I created.

However nobody picked those because they cut up the image and worsen the composition. Thoughts on what to do? I do agree the current wings are rather happy looking.

05 May 2011, 03:47 PM
Oh, I see now.. I just did a really quick test.. what about combining dark and light? Too avoid being too happy, but still not cutting the image in half. I think darker wings are a must just behind his torso..

I hope u dont mind. And its just a suggestion, dont bother using it if it doesnt work for u :)

05 May 2011, 03:50 PM
..or if u'll go with bright wings, it should reflect some of the light on his body. Right now it has a shadow on his back, despite wings are glowing. I think that could be the thing that confuses.

05 May 2011, 07:45 PM
Thanks for the quick overpaint!

I have started subtly darkening the wings. Very subtly, so maybe I will have to darken them further.

As for your second comment. I am surprised that you ask for the blue light to be reflected on the body, because I have made blue rim lighting, and a blue glow across most edges of the god! Maybe in the small image its hard to see, let me post some screenshots of the zoomed in PS file.

05 May 2011, 01:02 PM
Pavel, it's looking good. Referring to what NinjaASSN was saying with the blue lighting, I think you have to remember your final post will only be 1000px wide so attaching close-ups to prove you have some reflected light in places won't work. I know you have a massive file size, but I'm sure you needn't go any bigger than say 5000px high (mine is currently at this) which will still give you the option of working on large areas of the image at once without too much slow down. I'm with Ninja on this one, it can't hurt to bathe him in a little more reflected light just to see what it looks like. In fact all the way through this I've been taking screenshots of my pic, opening that up in photoshop and playing around on 2 MB file when I have drastic ideas in mind - it's well worth it! Nice model sheet by the way, I haven't even started mine yet - eek!

I agree with Alex there..That is one big downside of working digitally ; you can get lost in all those details while searching for perfection..I was frequently doing that , you know being charmed with zoom-in function so much that even my sketches were no longer sketches lol.
And i'm still suffering from that bad habit ( i swear myself that i wouldnt do it when starting this challenge but i did it again so spent much more than necessary hours on my entry already)
so that sometimes you can spend hours on some very tiny details which no one can see when looking at a distance. And that can damage the unity of composition and sometimes colors..

Anyway, i also agree with previous posts. You actually don't need that much dimensions. It will both slow you down and your computer.Even for prints, you don't need that large of a canvas since it's 300 dpi and people will look at it (generally) at a distance of a couple of meters and most details (i mean microscobic ones) won't be visible.

I'm really sorry if i sound (and i know i do ) like a jackass but i've suffered a lot from this when i switched from traditional to digital media. (lol and still suffering from monitor calibration issues but that's another story..) so just wanted to share my thoughts on this

05 May 2011, 04:34 PM
I think you're getting a great environment and good lighting.
I like it. Cheers.

05 May 2011, 04:39 AM
Yigit, it's so insanely large because I am obsessed with maximizing picture quality. If one of my friends wants a poster or If I decide to print this piece in 44 inches width for the art festival this summer where I am supposed to sell art, my picture will be crystal clear even up close. It's hard to live with a blurry poster for me.
By all means, it's likely nobody will buy a poster from me, but just in case someone asks for one, I won't have exuses haha.

But I know exactly what you mean about wasting time on details nobody will ever see and sacrificing the picture as a whole..

Thanks to both of you!

I have the other leg left to finish and make the sky high Rez.

****, I also forgot the cg society logo! Where could I put it? I am at a loss for that one

05 May 2011, 08:00 AM
hi, PavelSokov, your final illustrations turn out great, it is really a huge and powerful god, like an universal god. i suggest to desaturate the blue wave on the god back and add some light effect on the god left hand since the god has the "control" feeling on the palm. keep it up and good luck!

Hey Derrick!
I will definitely give desaturating the wings a shot!

I thought about adding magic to his left hand, but I couldnt see it compositionally.
So instead I added it to his right hand. I mainly finished the left leg though, and I am unsure about it. It looks awkward, but I have no idea why... So I only have the sky and background to finish up before next monday!

I need to know whether the hand fire is cool or not.
Also I need to know if the hand shaow is good or distracting?

Hand magic, no hand shadow:

No hand magic, but with hand shadow:

Please let me know!

Hand magic AND hand shadow for me. The Logo? Perhaps you could put if on his nose as a Color Dodge or Linear Dodge layer to make it glow, right inside the blue circle? Otherwise as a badge on his chest, like a logo on a t-shirt, or a tattoo? Kind of stuck for other suggestions, sorry!

Allright so I went for no hand shadow based on a poll.

I am finished the beauty shot, but will not submit for a few days in order for me to fix any problems that you guys might point out.

I have reluctantly settled with the logo's placement being on his head. I am really unhappy with the whole logo thing, but it must be done.

First up the final shot as I prefer it. No logo, but with signature. Click the link for a larger then ever before image.

Now here is the submission reduced to the right size and with the cg logo. The signature is taken off because I notice most people submitt their work without a signature. Am I right? Is it a faux pas?

But now I am having problems. The image is so small!

Submission possibility 1)

Next up I tried to crop the image, sacrificing the background to show more details on the god.

Submission possibility 2)

Submission possiblity 3)

Hi Pavel,

I would go for submission 2 but my 2 cents would be to shift it rightwards and kind of get rid of the left wing even at the cost of its right thumb going missing off the screen as that bow curve doesn't do any good to the overall composition. Hope that helps and good luck!

05 May 2011, 05:04 PM
I might of done it wrong but when I tried doing what you said it had a really cropped feeling.

So there is a problem with the left wing curve? Is it the gentle way it wraps around the earth?

Here are some closeups:

Ok so here is my final submission!

Thank you all so much for helping make this my best painting yet. I really wouldn't of been able to push it this far without your attentive help. You always answered my questions and helped me make the right decisions. I appreciate it!

I'm glad you finished it in time. It's been really nice talking to you and having your opinions during the challenge.Good luck.

Congratulations Pavel, u did a great job! Thank you also for help in my thread, I really appreciate it. Hope to see u in next challenges as well :) good luck!

Well done on getting this all sorted, very godlike concept and beautiful colours - good luck!

Wow the last 3 comments in my thread were from the 3 greatest Cg society contestants!
I really appreciate your attention, I feel blessed.

Here is a little writeup for my god.

“...As The Screams Of A Thousand Suns Cried Out, Someone Heard Their Call, And From Their Suffering and Death, A Child Was Born...”

My god is Xrilias, the God of Nullity.
