So this is my first time trying my hand at a Dominance War, should be quite fun. Right now all I've got is a bunch of images that I think have some interesting elements to help guide me towards a design.

Anyhow these sort of show the general theme I have in mind, but that may yet evolve somewhat.

good google work
i'm curious to see what you can do :)

Thanks! I'm also wondering just where this design will end up going. I was up until about 4am yesterday doing a concept sculpt for her head, and I think I may have something I can live with:

However, I think I need to avoid the temptation of just diving into modeling without a plan. I'll have to get someone to smack me if they see me working in 3d this weekend :)

I'm very happy, because you used a reference of one of my favorite artists, Talexi, is an italian artist, i love his style, seems to be like a french drawing style sometimes but he is italian
and i don't know, maybe you can't understand it but i'm very proud of it, because here in italy if you are an artist you are a poor dead man, so he was a brave man, and he succeeded :)
i like his artwork because he have a clean line and he use opaque and warm colors, anyway your face is very good, clean and pure like a real fighter without rage or fear
the naginata and the katana are good blades, but if i was you i try to look also the shaolin shimitar, and i try to take a look to some shaolin monk reference like also the monk movie instead only the photo reference, the only thing is that they are allways male person, i will try to see the girls in the last samurai movie, she is pretty good if you want a female reference with long black hair if you want to use a japanese style, and don't forget the loto flowers (maybe on the cloth, or on the blade)... the perfection

good work :)

Sk8erWolf, I took a look at some of Talexi's work and wow, he's damn good. Now I'll have to really make sure I do a good job :D I mostly chose the naginata and katana because they're usually long, thin blades, with a nice looking curvature that just seems graceful to me. I do like the look of some Chinese weapons too, so I may have to see about making up some kind of fictional hybrid that borrows elements from both. I do like the idea of a lotus flower in her design, I was thinking dragons and such, but that feels more masculine, the lotus would definitely be more appropriate.

I did a bit of work on a concept. Basically I just took an existing rigged character and posed her up with a quick stand in weapon to get an interesting silhouette. I'm not sure about the hair, but I do want to go with some more wild "ronin" looking stuff. The color is probably temporary, I needed something that would really stand out. I just had a cool idea for a circlet / crown that has some blade like elements in it, I'll have to scribble it down before the idea passes...

03 March 2011, 03:08 AM
this is a good pose i think
because she is strong yes, is a fighter, but sometime maybe can have compassion for her enemies, so if i was you i will try to make a pose with the weapon down, like to tell "i don't want to kill you... but if you really want to die..." :)

03 March 2011, 04:01 AM
Hmm, I think that pose works because most people know who she is, and what she's capable of :) I probably won't go with the pose I've got in my rough concept, its more just to figure out how her kimono would unfold in a more extreme pose. I am kind of partial to the stance the guy with the naginata assumes in this video though:

It has kind of a "Don't come here, really, just don't" kind of feeling to it. Anyhow, there's plenty of time to figure out that stuff, for now I still need to get my concept nailed down.

03 March 2011, 11:00 PM
Trying out some color ideas, and possibly some kind of headgear and leg armor.

03 March 2011, 12:52 AM
Playing around with the general shapes of her headgear. I should rough in some hair to see how the two elements interact, kind of hard to judge right now.

03 March 2011, 12:56 AM
your off to a good and quick start.
this is an awsome excuse to dust of the old samurai films.
keep it up.
now we just have to get the other slackers at the office to get started...

Quick, but kind of scattered at the moment, I keep changing my mind about some stuff. I'm definitely going to be watching some Kurosawa this weekend, get a few more ideas for her gear then. I'm sure the others will eventually get their butts in gear and post some stuff if we pester em a bit ;)

After sleeping on it I realized that her headpiece was way too damn big and just wouldn't work at that size. I managed to cobble together some rough hair geometry to get a better idea of what sorts of shapes I've got to work with / around.

03 March 2011, 04:31 AM
Another possibility just came to me, and its kind of growing on me. I'll have to change the shape a bit more, but I like this idea of using a hair ornament rather than a circlet / headband.

03 March 2011, 01:55 PM
Nice, your models' faces always have a distinctive style to it, great seeing you in this competition =D

03 March 2011, 06:01 AM
Thanks Kirmu! Yeah, a lot of people have commented that my stuff is pretty recognizable as being done by me... at least I'm consistent ;)

Began work on her body, and I dunno, I doubt I'll be getting much rest this weekend! I'm not sure I'll keep her quite so well endowed, she's the goddess of blades, not boobs :P

03 March 2011, 06:35 AM
wow! great start! your thread makes me feel mega behind now. haha. Goodluck the rest of the way!

03 March 2011, 06:57 AM
cool man, the concept sculpt is looking good. i figured sculpting something up would help me too, my brain aint to good at 2d ;)

nice start

03 March 2011, 12:29 AM
DTRAN, don't worry, there's still lots of time and all this sculpt stuff is still just the conceptual work... I don't think I'm really that far along.

Truedeja, yeah I know what you mean about the 2d stuff being a bit of a brain bender. I will say that your concept sketches are pretty cool though, way better than what I could pull off :D

This weekend was pretty much a write-off, as I moved into a new place and spent most of my time getting settled in and debugging my ever so finicky computers. Every time I move them, they decide to act up in new and interesting ways.

Anyhow, I'm a little bit farther along with the body, stuff is slowly taking shape.

03 March 2011, 04:20 AM
Did some reworking of her hair, the initial style was a bit too flat looking, and wasn't really throwing an interesting silhouette. This current stuff is just basic volumes to get a feel for how big the various parts are going to be. I don't yet have a solid idea as to how I'll actually pull this hair off... I predict lots and lots of textured grids :P

I've also got a pair of throwing daggers in her hair. I'm not sure how she'd pull them out without slicing her topknot, but I'll figure something out .

03 March 2011, 01:39 PM
Great start for sure! I like it a lot and don't worry about the hair, you'll pull it off.

03 March 2011, 12:16 AM
Thanks Jcarl904, I hope you're right :) The hair and cloth are probably what will make or break this character. Speaking of cloth, I spent a bit of time blocking out a sort of kimono top for her. Nothing fancy yet, just getting a feel for what shape it should be. I'll have to look further into how the bottom bit layers up, I suspect there's more going on than I'm seeing in my reference pictures.

Just a quick update of the clothing. I couldn't help myself and indulged in a bit more modeling than a rough block in probably needs.

03 March 2011, 01:28 PM
Some temporary facial detailing. I'll have to revisit her face and do a few tweaks, some stuff isn't looking the way I'd want.

03 March 2011, 10:20 PM
really quick on the mark
and the model is looking sweet
great start to a great character

peace out

03 March 2011, 11:04 PM
hi rtrska,
your concept is looking quite good so far.
However, I think the godess still looks very human-like.
Adding more "sword" to her, like for example incorporating switchblades into her bodyparts for active fighting, or small overlapping blades covering some bodyparts like fish-scales for defense would underline her personality, me thinks.
Keep up your good work

04 April 2011, 03:22 AM
Hey Skyheinrich, you said pretty much what I was thinking, but didn't really feel like admitting to myself :) She does need some more blade like elements in her, after all, she is supposed to be the very embodiment of blades. I kind of like how the Japanese adaptation of Witchblade handled the main character's design, so I'm using that as a starting point for some ideas of my own.

Thanks Vieira505, I figured I should work as fast as I can on this initial stage as stuff can take unexpected turns and end up taking longer than planned.

Not sure if I'll even keep the kimono idea if I decide to go crazy with biomechanical blade armor and such. I'll have to figure out a balance in that case. This design is going to be a lot harder to nail down than I had anticipated .

I just threw this one up because she's looking like a refugee from a Conan movie :P The red loincloth is just a temporary thing until I figure out just what to do with her pelvis / leg clothing.

04 April 2011, 12:42 PM
Nice work, You're doing a real good job on this chick.

04 April 2011, 08:56 PM
Hey, thanks! I'm trying, oh man am I trying ;)

I modeled up a sword for her, and then mangled it into a few variations so she's got a katana / wakizashi, and some huge "buster sword" looking thing. I may go with this for her weapons instead of the naginata, which, while being a cool weapon, isn't as badass as a huge sword.

Still a lot to figure out, but I think its kind of coming together, finally.

04 April 2011, 03:09 AM
I think I finally have a fairly solid idea of what her body "armor" is going to be like. Basically, almost anywhere there's bones near the surface, I'll have some kind of blade like bit kind of coming through the skin. So far I've got her ribcage mostly figured out, and I think I'll carry this sort of theme around to her back and up to form some "shoulder blades" :P The same idea for her elbows and forearms, hands, shins, and feet. I may try some sort of blades poking out of her shoulders, kind of emerging from between the segments of the deltoid.

This is gonna be a lot of work, but then sleep is highly overrated :)

04 April 2011, 04:24 AM
I didn't have a whole lot of time to work on her today, but I did get a tiny bit further along. I'm not sure how much of what I had planned for her upper back will really be worth doing, since I'm pretty sure she'll have some variation of that kimono top in the final piece.

04 April 2011, 05:33 PM
looking nice .........

04 April 2011, 12:54 AM
Thanks Chandramohansahani, your god's looking pretty cool as well.

I finally settled on how I'll handle her arms and legs, but its going to force me to rework her torso armor a bit to match the change "style" of armor. Anyhow, I think its time to move onto the finalized highres geo. I've been a bit too indecisive, and if I don't just push onto the next stage it'll never progress :P

04 April 2011, 03:37 AM
Looks like I lied about going to the highres right away :) She still seemed to be missing something so I figured wings would be cool. However, cyborg wings with swords for feathers is even cooler, and seems to fit the general theme and direction her armor's been going.

04 April 2011, 09:28 AM
Come on Mr, feed us some more progress. :)

04 April 2011, 12:43 AM
Haha, I'd love to, but my machine's motherboard died on Friday, and the replacement is kind of flaky, hopefully I'll get it sorted out soon because time is ticking away!!!
