good to have you on board for the main event.
your work from the warm up was kewl.
looking forward to see what you come up with.

thanks for the support guys, I will do my best for this challenge.

I just did a few sketch for starting, according to pros it will be useful to me and it did ! somehow i can come up with alot of weird shape for the armor or the sword.

btw i still cant decide the gender yet, but for my God I do not wanna try to make it look grand with stuff flying around him, what i try to work on is the character itself. It have to be strong, wise and have a lot of battle experience and also he was once human !

geez i got a lot thing to think about

03 March 2011, 08:59 AM
nice thumbnails! i tend to like B, J and K.
to have him look wise i would suggest taking something wise, like an owl. and use that as reference for certain parts of the armor/head.
or if you go with a huge sword(as in K) make the middle part have some nice latin transcription or godly ornaments.
maybe mix a few "less manly" things, such as floral pattern into his armor. to give some contrast.
just some ideas.. anyhow, you have some really nice proportions that makes him look massive and godlike already without those "stuff flying around him".

wow everyone moving with speed of light ! envy them, my job took my time the most and I really wanna have my concept for character design as perfect as possible.

now here's what I've done

Base on my survey of my thumbnails, most people choose K for it's "awesomeness" but for me my personal choice is E. in order to make my character look with what I intended i choose E, well Fellah's opinion is GREAT ! but placing an icon such as owl to symbolize wise, somehow I don't quite like it, it will defeat my purpose to make my character looks certain way, I want it show all over My God's face which is my selling point of my character, but adding stuff that not manly such as flower is great idea, i will consider that later.

so my character why monk ? honestly my character was influence by Andy Lau movie " Shaolin" (it's great movie) and one of the diablo 3 class Monk. i think It able to represent a wise character and strenght in a same time. and why I didnt Choose K for my character ? well I might not come up with an appropriate reason but base on my survey on every forum that I've spied on. most of it choose a medival style that wear a giant armor to make their character looks great, and there is a lot of competition for that kind of style, so I tried different approach how to make my character well " stand-out".

I welcome more critics, comment and even " your work sucks !" 24/7 =D

I like your choice and direction your going! can't wait to see more

04 April 2011, 04:18 PM
thx zoox !

finally I allow myself to update my progress ! it's been slow one but "slow but sure" . . . nvm, anyway here's the update

I start with the overall look with really quick and ugly character modeling, along the way until I satisfied with what kind of thing he gonna wear, i retouch the character model until like this.

and this is how I develop the head i thought I wanna give a wise and kind look, but err. . .. a guy with a kind look while holding a sword ? (*yuck) so yea i modified so he also look fierce enough to tremble the enemy. oh btw that thing like flying paper ? gonna be flaming mustache !

then the robotic arm glove also suffer with my own process.

then finally the weapon, the most simple thing to model but yet somehow. . . idk what you guys think ? it's just too simple for the god of sword's sword ? or it somehow "fit" the character ?

as usual i welcome any comment and critic and even "your work suck!" 24/7

i like your direction, very cool! :)

04 April 2011, 05:07 PM
well thanks pixel-chic.

I look over my concept again and i relies i didn't satisfied with it, it look generic nothing special from my previous monk, so i change into this.

critics and comment plz

04 April 2011, 02:38 AM
I still prefer the previous one with the monk head, wolf's head I feel look even more generic, maybe you can make the monk head unique like adding scars and prominent wrinkles to emphasis that he had been through lots of battles or something. Just a thought.

04 April 2011, 05:19 AM
Kirmu: i thinking a same thing when i making a human one but i come through a question to myself, "why it have to be human ?", because i thought human were more generic than "animal", and why wolf ? i haven't figure out yet,. but still I in the middle of dilemma human or wolf ? that i need to progress on ?

so your suggestion gonna really help me out.

04 April 2011, 06:40 PM

I think both design looks cool... Personally i think that monk looks more god like for now, but the monk's face looks abit common, thinks i saw some artist did a character with that monk's face at the pre-domwar before, think the wolf is cool aswell. maybe add more god element to him.

04 April 2011, 02:38 AM
Hi, maybe you can include the monk head with some wolf element to it, but not turning it totally into a wolf head, something like the reference below. Just a suggestion, wish you luck :)

04 April 2011, 06:17 AM
kingstonz: haha now more than ever my wolf win the human monk ! yea i remember that monk too. that's why i ask myself, why human ? thx for feed back btw.

kirmu: haha i really wanna throw all human element away from my design, but thats great idea ! but i already love my wolf heads.

04 April 2011, 04:41 PM
i finally finalized the final model and kinda satisfied with it, no i love it ! hers the update.

finally unwrapped and do some color blocking.

and added some Chinese cloud pattern on the back.

pleas do comment and critics

another weekly update more detail on the armor the color is not fixed yet but I already like the armor patterns

i try a fur for a bit kinda confusing how to make it blend in with the head, any suggestion for this ?

and then the sword, my original idea it's a jade sword, but the color still WIP it's still too dark for the upper part.

please do comment and critics, they do help alot !

nice work.
only one comment about fur you mentioned is.... fur texture on head has kind of photograph feeling and head shape is really stylish like a character from cartoon. inconsistency between texture style and head shape style might be reason for fur texture not to blend into head. it might be helpful to add more hand painting or scurlpting feeling on head texture.

05 May 2011, 02:48 AM
Does your inspiration come from Okami? Those patterns reminded me of the wolf from that game. To me, I think your wolf head can be more stylised to match those patterns you did for the armor, instead of a realistic wolf head.

05 May 2011, 04:33 AM
Jae-Keum & Kirmu: Thx for the comment. Well yeah I relies this before I change to wolf monk thing, my original idea was to make wolf head first and if it doesnt fit with the armor, i'll change it untill it fit with it but now I got two options here:
-make the wolf face stylish but my only concern is it will have less detail profile and it didn't show the "DW" quality.
-make the armor realistic but my concern it's damn hard to pull off and it will take times, like a LOT of times.

I gonna try to do "make the armor realistic but it's damn hard to pull off", if it fail and take times a lot, I gonna do the other option which I assume it take less time than the other option. Time is the essence here which is why I skip the sculpting phase. I hope I was right.

Kirmu: when i making this, it is inspired by "okami" but now i cant tell the difference between stealing others idea or be inspired by it.

05 May 2011, 04:19 PM
hello there!: i think youre getting a nice style on the character, I dont think that aiming for the realistic is the way to go here, probably u can style the head very little and continue with the style you have so far, its lokking really nice :) It remind me a bit the KungFu panda drawings so its very artistic look and I think It can work, probably u can add some wear highlights to armour so its not too 2d, but well i believe is matter of testing it to see how it fits ..
youre doing a good work man..keep on rocking

05 May 2011, 08:26 PM
thx rattlesnake I know that was the right decision to make ! and so here's the update ! im just adding details on armor and adding some model accessories like swords sheaths more cloth, more fur and more etc, it look satisfying now ! or is it the syndrome of "too much dealing with same artwork again and again untill u like it in the end" ?. i hope not.
anyway here's the update !

and the back i manage to get transparency map too ! i think i still gonna need to tweak that cloud thing

and for fun purpose, how does the sword's sheaths works.

btw how to change my god's title ? from god of sword to god of fang ? i tried request it on QnA but didnt get anything.

anyway feed back please ! critics, comment and "your work sucks!" 24/7. i still got times to changes stuff ! meanwhile gonna do pedestal.

05 May 2011, 03:13 AM
nice progerss. I thinks the look of texture fits way better to your stylish art then before.

05 May 2011, 12:34 AM

it started to look really cool... i like the colour and the stylize direction.. great job..

05 May 2011, 04:59 AM
jae-keum: well thx man, i can't pull it off without your critics
kingstonz: thx bro !

After a stressful consideration from all feedback that i gather across the world ! the proportion of my previous model look likeeeeeee. . .. . puppy ! so i tweak it even more untill what i said grown up wolf ? idk what you guys think ? all texture are final but still flexible to change stuff that i dont want, i only have to pose it up and model a pedestial, i still got no idea what my pedestial gonna look like.
