Hi there folks,
Here is a little video demonstration on the process and technique that I followed to rig a bird's wing. Hope you like it. Comments, critiques, queries and suggestions are most welcome ... :)

awesome rig! good job i would like to see a dynamicv solution for feathers too so that will speed up the animators workflow

yup, dynamic setup based on hair system would have been better ... actually i was really impressed by the latest "Rango" movie trailer's bird animation ... would love to add a little dynamic spices. Glad you liked it giordi!

Great setup! One reoccurring thing that I have run into with bird wings is how good it looks folded up and how easily an animator can get to that position. Just something to keep in mind with wings.
I have found that control over the feathers is the important part but you need to have gross controls that allow the animator to shape the whole wing. I have also found that the simpler solutions are the best. This one doesn't use any bones at all in the feathers.

Matthew, thanks! Well ... hmmm, the folding part huh! it's a tough cookie. The folding of the wings is actually done manually by controlling individual wing controllers and then saving the pose file for future animation. I could have gone for a simple set driven key connection to hook each controller as well but trust me it's not that simple ... anyways i will try putting a controller for wing folding to relax pose. Thanks for the quick thought :D
Paul , thanks for the share. I will surely try it out. I have always been greatly inspired by your work :)

hey man , good demo, although my eyes full of sleep i couldnt go with out seeing that, u seem -as i got -able to avoid intersection for some extent, but really wanted to see it folded, well done and good luck in ur job search
PEN ur set up was inspiring to me and i could achieve something like it u can see here
but it seems that u couldnt avoid feathers intersections , hope to get solution for that!!

Thanks a lot Ahmed and good luck to you as well ... Yes I am keeping an eye open for opportunities ;)
I think a blend of Paul's setup with mine and the folding stuff would be a pleasure to animate with! I will try it out sometime.
