Those are some of the coolest shaders I have ever seen.

Awesome work on the R&D pics!

Are the surfaces formed via displacement maps (I forget what they are called in Max) or are the surfaces modeled?

Yes, the base geometry is pretty basic. Antennas in first one are modeled but rest of them are basicly displacement geometry with procedural maps.

very good way of texturing alien things, beside the sketch is colorful and amazing, The Idea is new and created..( world full of colored fascinating rocks & creatures that shape tentacles...)

Ok, I went back to drawing board to do some sketching about inhabitants of this ethereal and colourful world. Here's the the Older One.

I want these entitys to be peaceful, cute, a bit silly but yet almighty and powerfull. Sort of like hippies of universe with stereoids...;)

Your work is very interesting so far. Colors are very good.
You surely have captured the feeling of "micro" space.
Is this going to be underwater world or do those things fly?

Anyhow, looks promising, one of the threads I surely will follow.

...and those test renderings are pretty amazing.

man those are some extremly sweet textures....I am loving this piece so you use falloff material to get those effects...just curios if you could ellaborate a bit more on how you achieved those textures...but I understand if you don't want to give up your secrets, but maybe after the challenge is over I would love to look at some of your shaders and and how you got those amazing textures...anyway:beer: and look forward to seeing more!

Bezerker75: Actually I'm not using falloff but some top secret lighting tricks.. ;)

I will reveal my techniques when I'm starting to texture and light the final scene. But now I'm still doing researches.

ssalo- I've been a fan of yours sience the 'sphere Competition'. I must also say that shading test 3 is brilliant. I can't wait to see how it was done (and thank you for sharing the sphere materials). You still using Max scanline??

but now to the point of my post. To help you not error from the instructions of the hosts of this contest:
" The Scene: You are standing on some unknown alien setting. .....but life forms are inexistent."

I love you ideas and would very much like to see them carried out. But I also want to make sure that you know what you doing making life forms.

Mabey I'm too much of a stickler. I hope I'm not being rude.:beer:

BTW, If you wrote a book on texturing I'd buy it.

pluMmet: Yes, these were pure scanline renders but I'm starting to use more and more VRay Free because it is so damn fast doing GI and intergrates well with max's materials. In future I propably see what Mental Ray can do, being part of max 6.

Thanks for reminding me about to guidelines. I suck at reading rules. I let my lawyer go thru it and see if there's any loopholes... ;)

Writing a book about texturing and rendering (max specific) could actually be fun thing to do. Who knows...

Hi there!

Hopefully everybody's doing ok. Still haven't started the actual modeling, but still refining the ideas. Thanks to pluMmet I re-read the instructions and I realized I was a bit carried away. Anyway I used the old sketch as a template and did a new approach to it.

That looks nice. A little child watching the unknown. Scary but sweet. I would be pretty scared if the wall of my bedroom changes to that scenery, but also that scenery would be so tempting, beautiful and very dream like. I probably would jump towards it and wish I dont hit the wall.

hmm this is really cool. and very hard to find any flaws. i might suggest a more dynamic pose for the toy bear, like the bear might be getting sucked in and the boys holding it back, as its changing into another form of matter? It also seems to be somewhat tranparent on the bear but that may be from a quick composite. i would sparpen up the corridor textures add a bit of contrast to the floor as a bump map then the depth of feild would really look nice. its hard to say really, cuz you have a child type wonder to the image and increasing the photorealism as i suggested would draw away from that.

formoso: Yeah, bear's transparancy is due quick test compositing. And the pose needs still some work.

claudio_jordao: I didn't want to go for just pure abstractionism - which would be too obvious IMO - but something different .This approach could disqualify me in end in judges are picky but we'll see that then.

Love your comic style its really refreshing and heading into a direction wich is a league of its own. :thumbsup:
The light, the effects and the morphing room are very cool.
give you a big WOW on that update!

I looked at your work with much interrest from the beginning.
As I studied this step and have a few suggestions:

Bear: a minor detail is the mirrored fur of the bear, if its procedural fur move on half of the uwv ( you can detach one half and flip or move the elements uvw in the unwrapuvw modifier) to not have a repetition and then weld the bear back together, done in 2 mins

Boy: A transluscent shader on the pyjama looks wrong to me, the fabric should be 99% opak.
id' make a blendmaterial for hair and skin, because skin is transluscent, hair reacts more like metal in light.
as the boy is seen a bit from the side, the left ear should be a bit visable. if you made him as polymodel, with a few cuts (Never extrude on a mapped poly, you destroy the vertexindex) and pull verts it on position, this is done in another 3 mins.

Walltextures: something with the ceilingteyture (not sure if ther is "wall texture needed) and the direction of the stars at the seems to be wrong in scale, and direction, as the walls gets morphed but the direction continues straight ahead... if they were done in postproduction, you can also make it in your 3d app.
if you haven't collapsed the modifier stack yet, its done with a click. just pull down uvwmodifier under (before) any deformation and its done. If you already collapsed it, its a bit a match but you still can do it.
The key is morphtargets. make copy of the object, name it "morphtarget" or whatever and hide it. Then create a box as reference and "unmorph" the verts of your model manually. horizontal and vertical edges have to be straight at the end of this step. Then apply an UVW (cylindrical or box in this case) and use texporter. Open the file now in Photoshop now you can easy paint a mask for blendmaterial and place stars. And finally, use morph with your morphtarget to get your uvw corrected model back to its original shape with one click...

The alloverimpression is just great, and I love your work, its very very original. goodluck and keep on make me go wow! Keep on roockin!

Yeah, it really seems that Sami has taken a closer look at Metin's picture first before creating this one....

I'm not sure. Could be some subconscious inspiration, but I don't know... I mean look at it:

The composition looks quite similar: the little boy, striped pyjamas, the point of view, the teddy bear in is hand, he's standing in his bedroom, a toy lying on the floor, his attention drawn by some magical light...

The similarities with Metin's image is undeniably strong! And Metin's image has been around for some years already, it's been on his Seven's Heaven website for ages!

So, yeah, I like the image, but is it an original artwork? Nah, I don't think so.

...Its not like this is a difficult concept to make up, cause you know kids like teddy bears and when they get amazed at something one could only imagine that wherever the kid goes, so does the tedy. Look the're all different those pics. Sure the subject is the same but soo what? Look at my image, somebody said in my thread that This idea was made up by an Artist named Royo and left the link for me. I checked it out and whatr do you know shit Mr. Royo had simillar rtee things going across his pavement walls. Anyways the point I'm trying to make is that I guess there is nothing new under the sun only variations of it. Good Work you all!!!, and nicely executed!!!:buttrock:

Hi Sami,

My image with the kid is in the images folder of the Max 5 install, among other places. :) I created it with one of the first versions of finalRender Stage-0, about 3 years ago. It might be a case of unconscious inspiration? Well, it doesn't really matter anyway. As Crazybread mentioned, all creations are variations on a theme. I don't want to spoil this thread.
