Getting closer to what I imagined, though I think the lighting and post effects will change the look significantly.

it looks nice, I like the water elements that come out, will they be producing there own bits of light too? You might want to take a closer look at the colors they don't really work well together, might wana change or tone down the purple a bit and add more to the background, that moon looks lonely

Hi Sara!

I really like the idea of the embrionic lake, it's original. :thumbsup:

In general, I think you still should continue your progress of your modeling and texturing and not step that fast into postproduction.

a few lil' suggestions:
The Lake: I think it would be more obvious that its a lake when you bring in some more materials like some borders to the lake (like a beach?)
I also think you should scale down the waves on your lake a bit, this will make the scene looking bigger.

Terrain: in your concept, you have 3 main levels (layers), and they get losts in your modeledterrain, I think you could flatten out a few (sub-)bumps, to create a few sections, so the layers get to more effect. This will also support the feeling for the distance when you start working on the athmosperical effets (volumetrices, fog n stuff)
I't not a must, a terain is modeled from one single plane, you can also a bit more away (viewing direction) model the skyline with a new plane.

The yellow Planet: has too regular craters, ( bring in more variation in size) as only a segment of the sphere will be visable, try to eperiment a bit with displacement, you can gain great effects with this. (Not sure if its how its called in maya or lightwave, I use max...)

Wow thank you for the great comments and suggestions.

Funkymunkey - Yes the water elements will be giving off some amount of light once I get to that point. I think that the colors will end up being toned down a bit as well. The background/sky will be created in photoshop and added in post.

1st_angel - I agree about the terrain. I don't know how much distance effect I can gain with environment fog as I have not used it before. I will be working more on the terrain textures/colors as well to get more of that layered effect like my concept sketch. As for the lake, I would like it to end up having a "misty" sort of there is a mist rising from it and the pods are growing out of that. I think that the lighting may help with this but I will be revisiting the textures as well. I will also take your suggestion and play around with the craters of the moon/planet.

Some color tests with revised texture maps to make the distance layers more apparent, water scale correct, etc.

This is definitely very original, almost like a toonscape (if that's a real word).

You might bump into some problems conveying a sense of huge scale here though... just keep going. :wip:

i like the red and light blue water, i can kinda see the moon being the orange color more then the same as the water....also... try taking off the shininess on the ground...might give it a more nostalgic look to it...might want add another layer behind the lightest part of the ground to give that far stretching element to the layout, make it grayer and barely there but let just enough peak over to show that the ground does continue on...good work, i wana see more

hmm the idea is VERY original, and i like the way the embryos are executed. the colours i think are a wee bit extreme, maybe u could make them a little less well extreme. but thats my just two cents anyway :D

Thank you for the replies. I will be changing the shape of the embryos a bit tonight.

funkymunkey90 - I will try your texturing suggestions and see how they look. I am quite attached to the shininess of the ground though.

JamesMK - You are right about the scale problem. Renders with a wider apect ratio look a little more vast with the same scene but I may try revising the ground textures again to make it seem like a more wide open terrain.

jaygee - The colors are extreme right now but I do plan to add environment fog for the rendering milestone. I think that will make the colors appear more muted.

Made some edits to the models and textures. Got the major lighting done. I would still like to get more of a glow/mist effect on the lake but I am not sure how to get the effect I want.

Beautiful color contrast. It really adds punch to the image. You could maybe desaturate the colors a bit, as someone else suggested, but this IS an alien world afterall, so extreme colors may be appropriate.

You might consider adding some more geometry to the hills. Perhaps some kinds of rocks or plants that get smaller going into the distance. That would help with the "vastness" part of the challenge.

WONDERFULL WORK!!! hmmm it seems to be advancing but if you want the shininess to be in there....if your using MAX make the texture a phong and give it some...phong has a soft shine at low levels which may not draw as much attention but still give off that gooey look to the texture....hmmm well again if your using can add a video post glow to the texture of the blue lake...BUT BE CARFUL!!! it could destroy the over all feeling if overflowing with a glow...great idea and a great look to it...the soft texturing gives it a softer feel which i like more

I created a new ground texture as I was less than thrilled with the last few iterations. I think this gives more of a feeling that the planet itself could be alive.

FunkyMunkey - I am adding a post glow effect in Maya but because I don't have a ton of lights I think I will have to enhance that in post.

Looks better and better, WOW! The new texture works great with the fog and the soft falloff of the embrio's aura now make it very soft and dreamscape like. Yes. It's like in a dream. A very nice dream. I really think (as your planet already HAS a bumpmap) you should try displacement, drag your bumpmap on the displacement slot and use the same map (the bumpmap) in selfillumination, a negative of it in oppacity (all amounts around 5 to 10) set the planetshader material as transluscent so the result will be it that you have a landscape of glowing materials... with a nice glowing planet in the background... :)
The ring seems somehow not to fit into the scene, how about an asterouid belt? very easy done, make a box (3/5/8) then use the subobject element to clone and rotate and scale every copy a bit, then use meshsmooth, noisemodifier, and then the bendmodifier, et voilą an asteroidbelt done in a few mins...
Keep up the great work, it's really an original piece with a very unique style! :wip:

Yet another update. I keep saying to myself that I am going to take a break but then I find yet another thing I want to tweak. This time I am posting an update to the rings. I like them better in blue.

Wow! Very alien indeed. Great colors.

Maybe you could try some sort of nebula in the sky. (or not, I don't know. I like nebulas:shrug: )

I added a nebula. I am not sure how I like the colors of it. I may add more green to it so it matches the ring a bit better. I will be sticking with the ring, as I like the most recent version of it a lot.

Today i have a bad headache because of this :
I have seen some powerful and stronge works that they has many details.In the art work i am realy such as you.It means that i like simply in the art.
And now i am between of two ways.leave my work at its simple and clean form or do hard modelings for aliens (such as proffessionals) .

You should be able to submit using the ftp address given on the "submit final image" page. I didn't have any problems, but I submitted last week. Perhaps there is a lot of traffic from everyone submitting today.
