View Full Version : Notice: Challenge system bug/issues report

10 October 2003, 10:29 PM
Hi all,

We are conducting the Alienware CG Challenge using a newly developed challenge management system that integrates CGNetworks and CGTalk. If you have any problems with using the system (e.g. uploading images, etc. and finding that it doesn't work), please post it here and we'll get onto it.

10 October 2003, 08:59 AM
Features to add:

- Page spanning
- From JDex - "Can you add the CGTalk Nickname to the info next to the images, I think it is really cool using the real names, but it would be great to see that info connected to the entries as well."
- "Update Challenger Details" - for miscreants who didn't give their real names :shame:
- "Modify/Delete Challenge Entry" - for mistakes during entry process
- Take latest entry and put it in the first post.

10 October 2003, 11:47 AM
I think it would be cool if the system inserted the most recent entry image into the automatic thread opening post... then it is easy to see what the person submitted most recently with out having to go through the view entries page or scanning the thread...

After three months these threads will be getting very long.

i have something to report. for one reason or another, my posts keep on not showing up, first it was number one, and then 2 started working but only every other time i visited it. and number one still doesn't work. whats up?

10 October 2003, 09:26 AM
punkjunk. I don't know. Your posts seem to continually be edited by you. What are you trying to do?

10 October 2003, 05:55 PM
i was trying to get the pictures to work, but, for some reason they won't. one of them was, but like i said, only every other time. and i was just trying a few different things to see if anything helped. but to no avail.

10 October 2003, 09:12 PM
trying to make pictures notepad style are we?

11 November 2003, 12:51 AM
Alright, maybe I'm an idiot, but I swear there used to be a a little field at the bottom of the message page that let you post attachments. It's not there anymore, in fact, it says that I'm not allowed to post attachments under the forum rules.

Am I missing something obvious here?

Thanks, Chuck

11 November 2003, 12:55 AM
Yup. I'm an idiot. Figured it out.

In your viewentries.php file, looks like when you made your query you forgot to use stripslashes().

There it says 'Guess what I\ve...' instead of 'Guess what I've...'

It could just be this persons typo, but it's highly unlikely.

I just tried to post an image that was borderline 150k, and the board objected. I slimmed it down and it gives me a different error.

I'm hoping that the 150K limit is per image, not your total(!)

Thanks. I'll look into that. It should automatically strip the slashes but looks like it isn't.

Disregard the last post, seems to be working OK now.

11 November 2003, 11:09 PM
Hey Steve

150k is per image. Please note that because of different filesystems, 150k on Linux is not the same as 150k on Windows - block sizes are different on the filesystems.

So yeah, aim to get it 5k under or more.

I was trying to subscribe to alienware challenge but when I tried to post a new thread the forum says :

"You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
You do not have permission to access the page that you were trying to. Are you trying to edit someone else's post or trying to access administrative features? Check that you are allowed to perform this action in the Forum Rules.
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation. "

I already activate my account .. any ideeas why it's not working this one ?

I don't think you can post topics in here. When you created / registered for the challenge a thread with your name is automagically created there for you to use.

12 December 2003, 07:48 AM
you're right about that ..
I had some problem with my web browser but now it's ok

01 January 2004, 06:49 AM
It's still the 20th in the western US and I can't upload my final pics! Says the contest is closed. I thought this was open till the end of the 20th, which I would assume would mean everywhere. I sent my final pics to the webmaster, so hopefully I can still have my picture judged. Time to fire up the ftp and see if the final 30mb file can go through.

01 January 2004, 08:35 AM
Yesterday I submited fibal image on ftp and after this my picture apeered in Final Image Submit page with message that I uploaded my final image and today I have this message:

Warning: opendir(/home/httpd/vhosts/ failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/ on line 298

..... and message is : You have not yet submitted a final image for judging!

I thougt it was done corectly but now I don't know what's going on!!??

01 January 2004, 09:31 AM
Like kryb I have found the same error:cry:

01 January 2004, 01:02 PM
Yes, me too

Would like to see if my last upload actually was successful...

01 January 2004, 02:08 PM
I actually loaded mine up in time, checked everything, ok, final image, here it is -

but when I check now, I also get this error message Warning: opendir(/home/httpd/vhosts/ failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/ on line 298

and - I would like to know if everything is ok now and it's just a web-based error - or - if I would have to upload my TIFF again?

01 January 2004, 02:22 PM
Same thing here concerning the viewing problem of the final submission. I just sent mail to Robert about it (didn't see this thread until now... Could perhaps have skipped the mail otherwise.)

I hope one can assume that it's just a web glitch... I'm pretty sure the file got across OK.

01 January 2004, 05:01 PM
I'm having the same problem. I had to make a last minute change and I logged onto the ftp server and there are no other entries there anymore. I'm reuploading anyway since I haven't seen any response to our reported problems.

01 January 2004, 05:24 PM
I have uploaded a second time today morning because bside the error the system said that I haven't yet upload the final image which I have upload yesterday and confirmed that it appears in the final image page.

When I finished the upload today the system said 1 image was skipped due user rules. So isn't worth.

I want to know just if this is a small problem.

01 January 2004, 08:06 PM
I've just noticed the same thing.

I uploaded my image yesterday (20-1-2004) at 16:00 GMT. It seemed allright and showed up in my "upload final image" page.
I went to work and came home at around midnight. Thought I'd check once more to be sure and SH*T it wasn't there, just the top pixel line. So 1 hour to go, I started uploading again...
Finally it worked. I could go to sleep feeling relaxed.
Now I'm just checking in browsing through the pages, and tried looking at my image again...
This is what I got:

Warning: opendir(/home/httpd/vhosts/ failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/ on line 298

You have not yet submitted a final image for judging!

But I did !! Three times allready.
I also found it strange that when I entered the FTP account, I could just change-copy and even delete the files if I wanted to.

How's that for taking out the competition?

01 January 2004, 08:31 PM
I baleeted all teh other entries hahahaha!!!!

no, seriously, but one of the admins should help us... NOW time's running up.

01 January 2004, 08:33 PM
Yeah well, deleted or not.
I'm uploading mine again, just in case........

01 January 2004, 09:07 PM
Well, if there is some kind of error that makes it impossible to upload when we're supposed to be able to, they'll have to allow us to upload later when it's all fixed.
If not, it's like saying: "Yeah, we added 36 hours, but you ain't gettin' them. MUHAHAHAHAHA"
Or something like that :D

So I'm not worrying too much.
But sure, a moderator should help us with this... Now...

01 January 2004, 10:45 PM
I have a problem with the submission of final entry. I can't seem to access the always get error or message which says the I have no permission to put files on the server or similar warning messages. I tried to resubmit it on < I had to manually direct to specific address cause the ftp system wont allow me to access or send any file. I copy pasted my file in that folder, but it seems there still problem with uploading as i dont get any complete file upload information. The uploaded file is only 18.5meg and I know i have 19.5 meg of zip file. I got only 13 hours left and i already tried uploading 3 times and still have same problem. How can I resove this error problem? Thanks..

01 January 2004, 11:45 PM
Hey jannoel!

Realy i had your problem and i couldn`t upload it.Of course such as you i uploaded it and recieved an error such as your error.

I don`t know whats the problem realy.

01 January 2004, 09:08 AM
It's the Aliens, I'm telling you..they're here!!!!

01 January 2004, 03:49 PM

i come in peace!!!

nope i'm not marty the martian but i sure have one heck of a problem and just learned tonight that i'm not the only one having difficulty in submitting the final image.

like most of you guys i received this message:

Warning: opendir(/home/httpd/vhosts/ failed to open dir: Permission denied in /home/httpd/vhosts/ on line 298

i have submitted the tif file in zip format (on time) a couple of times already and both took me around 4 hrs. to upload it. hasn't received any good sleep yet for 2 straight nights now because of this uploading problem. now that the extra 36 hrs have elapsed, does it mean that my entry has also elapsed it's chance for the voting process? i've emailed one of the moderator but seems they're all very busy-haven't heard anything from them as of this moment.

can somebody help us? please!!!

01 January 2004, 06:26 PM
Hi chocoski

seeing that lot's of people have had the same problem, I don't think it's in our hands anymore.
If you've uploaded it before closing time, then it should be there, except we can't see it anymore.
They must have transported all entries to some distant planet where they've abducted the jury....

no worries....

Thank you Mibus for answering this question on another thread.
For anyone who is interested, it is in:

Challenge system bug/issues report (CG Forum)

Leonard, everything is OK.
Thanks anyway.

01 January 2004, 05:48 PM
All is there I think and fixed, voting will start when its ready.
Let's get some rest after that storm. :)

01 January 2004, 08:37 PM
Only one participant was informed.
I am bringing this up so that everyone knows what is the the state of art:

This is the last information.
The enouncement that voting is going on - ------ is wrong.
Here is the latest information from a participant:
Hi there,
I wish this makes some issues more clear to everyone.

The voting opened lastnight, it was plugged on front page of CGTALK forums. Everyone rushed to vote.

I was in the CGTALK IRC at the same time, then someone said that not all work is showing and mine was also missing with some others.

Leigh was there at the time and she instantly took the plug down from the front page.

She informed me that all problems will be fixed and votes will be reset to ZERO.

I think this would be good to put up on somewhere, cause ppl are still thinking that the voting is going and they have not told to anyone. There was a plug, but it was taken down due to minor problem with images not showing.

Hope this helps you all.

Please, don't load up any wrong information about voting is going on. This is not the case!
Mibus was right.
So let us just wait and hope they will inform us all, and not some individually.

Good luck to you!

Actually, Eska, ALL the artists whose work we discovered was missing were emailed immediately with an apology and assurance that voting is being reset.

Please check your private messages.

As SOON as we realised there was a problem, I posted a thread in the CG News forum apologising for the mistake and assuring everybody that we are fixing things.

01 January 2004, 02:59 AM
I hopefully expect an e-mail when the voting starts..
That would be a nice gesure, wouldn't it?

anyway, goodluck to those who had uploaded without any problem.

01 January 2004, 08:19 PM
Here seems something wrong. Its only 8 pages instead of ten and some entries before there seem missing now, please check if your entries all appear.

Votingpage (

That is because some were disqualified due to lack of milestones.

Hi Leo can clear this up for me which one is correct?? I need to know as I have an interested third party that want's to use my pix on a CD cover. Many Thanks

On this page it mentions "exclusive rights"

By submitting any entries to the Alienware Challenge, artists are giving full, exclusive rights for Alienware and CGNetworks to use the material for marketing purposes in the context of the Alienware Challenge. Artists retain ownership of the material and are allowed to use it for personal promotional purposes only. i.e. Alienware and CGNetworks may use your entry with credits to the artist, but you still own the material and can use it in your portfolio. You cannot sell the rights to anyone else commercially.

Yet on this page it says "non-exclusive rights" which is correct?? Sorry I'm bit confused here.
